Too funny, when Hopwood was talking about a BBQ for the 4th of July I was reminded that Franklin Roosevelt hosted King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939 at Hyde Park and served them hotdogs (as well as other more British food). It wasn't the 4th of July but it was the 1st time a reigning monarch had been in the US. When Hopwood is talking to Janet around 1:51 I found myself singing King George III's song from Hamilton "You'll be back". Great video.
There is a news video from the time of Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Pres. Reagan’s ranch in Santa Barbara in 1983: there was a huge storm and the caravans almost did not get up the muddy hillside road to the main house. Plans were changed so they are lunch inside by the fireplace in the dining room where the Queen and Prince Philip had “quesadillas, refried beans, and tacos!!” (The the reporter pronouncing them with a Mexican accent!)
Such lovely people! Today I'm enjoyed a good old American Fourth of July. I also have my union jack bunting draped in my study as a sweet reminder of my time in England, just last month. Cheers to you all!

I watch Lost in the Pond. He’s British, married an American and lives near Chicago I think. He said they weren’t taught about the Revolution in school. He wasn’t aware of the 4th celebration until he moved to America.
So sweet that everyone pitched in to help you celebrate the 4th of July! If it makes you feel any better, it's raining at the moment, here at my place in Orlando, Florida. So, we haven't fired up our grill yet. We're going to grill some fresh corn on the cob (which we spread butter all over, sprinkle it all over with herb and garlic Mrs. Dash, wrap it well in tin foil and grill for 5 minutes, 1/4 turn & grill another 5 minutes, 1/4 turn and grill another for the last 5 minutes, comes out perfect every time and us DELICIOUS!). I also made a potato salad, and we're grilling hamburgers too. Fresh watermelon for dessert! It's my 2nd favorite meal of the year.... Thanksgiving being my favorite. 😊❤️
@HopwoodXIV I hope you try to pull something together for Thanksgiving! Would love to watch that... with lots of Fall decorations. Would be pretty. Not sure if you can make a full-fledged American Thanksgiving meal there. You might lack many ingredients. I just may have to ship you a care package for that holiday to help with some of that. An American friend of mine, who lived in London until he passed away last year, said he was never able to find everything he needed to pull together an authentic American Thanksgiving meal. Let me know what you CAN get, and I'll ship you some items you can't get... when the season gets closer. Breaks my heart when Americans can't have a traditional Thanksgiving meal. 😊❤️🦃🌽🍠🫓

Oh, honeybunch, I know how you’re feeling. But it was Thanksgiving morning. I taught university in Beijing in 1985(!!), and it was so sad. As I was driven to work, I looked at a truck next to us….it was an open truck just transporting freshly beheaded, pink pig heads. It was one of the loneliest moment in my life. Enjoy, my dear!!!!
You don't need an excuse to have a party whenever you want one, Hopwood! As much as the US became independent from Great Britain, Great Britain became independent from the US! Some, more cynical people might say that that is a great reason to celebrate! I thought it was a bit of a Pyrrhic victory because, had independence not happened, the US would have free healthcare like the UK. Given the horrendous price of healthcare in the US, that is an advantage worth valuing. Happy Independence Day!

Hopwood (Todd) --- only a couple days ago I came across your videos and I want to say that what you have chosen to do with your ancestral home and property is awesome. If I were to find out my family still has property in Bristol, the last known city in England where my family lived, I would do the same as you. You are 14th generation and I am 13th generation great grandson of the ship's carpenter and separatist who sailed on the Mayflower to the New World. I was born and raised on the Westside of Los Angeles and I am an electrical contractor who gets half my work as locations electrician for all the major studios and production companies for film and television. You've taken on a huge and daunting task with the restoration of Hopwood Hall, but it seems as if you are doing okay despite the obvious difficulties of any construction job, especially restoring a 600 year old manor. If I could come there and be of some help, I would. I have worked on historic homes like Greystone Manor (Doheney Mansion), Sowden House (Frank Lloyd Wright Jr), a Cathedral, and many more old and new spectacular homes and commercial properties, too many to list here. There are some photos on my webpage and Facebook (I haven't used FB since before the planneddemic) Ken Kaiser Electric in Los Angeles Happy 4th of July! I live downtown on the edge of Silverlake near Echo Park and it's 9:30 pm and the place is like a war zone. Non stop bombs and fireworks since this afternoon and it won't stop until one or two in the morning. Glad you got to have a BBQ today.
How fun. I’m so glad your British friends joined you in this celebration. Even though three out of four were displayed backwards, the American flags were a great touch. I didn’t realize displaying US flags was problematic for non-Americans until we lived in Japan. That field of blue is always top left when displayed on a wall or in a window from the POV of a viewer outside. You really do have some fabulous friends. Happy Forth of July. 🎉🎇🎉🇺🇸🎉

Told you in previous comments you are now making your own history. Maybe maybe next year you could plan a 4th July day in the grounds. Have a bring and bbq picknick? That means that you bring your own basket with your bbq items. Day of games etc etc
For future barbecues, a gas BBQ would be great, we used to have an Aussie one, you don't need to be dependent on the weather for the charcoal to get hot, especially in the British weather and you can put the top down if it rains and carry on cooking.
I do like to see them happily have a party with you so you can celebrate your home country. That’s sweet. ❤ 🇺🇸 🇬🇧 the chairs are nice! They don’t look old. And as for the wheel barrow grill people do that with rocks and ground so hey a grills a grill. As long as it’s outside! Perfect 👍

For real 4th cook out St. Louis, Kansas style bbq. Char the ribs then take a large pot add beer and several smoked bbq sauce. Cover Cook over low 6-8 hours. Stir frequently. You will be a hit

First, I was born in the U.S., and I've never heard of "burger sauce." What was in it? Second, I'm a lifelong Anglophile. I spent the summer of 1979 in England staying with a family in Hampshire. One morning at breakfast, everyone kept pointing out that it was July 4th, and I couldn't understand what they were getting at at first. I eventually realized, but I was so happy to be in England, it seemed irrelevant to me.

For real 4th cook out St. Louis, Kansas style bbq. Char the ribs then take a large pot add beer and several smoked bbq sauce. Cover Cook over low 6-8 hours. Stir frequently. You will be a hit

Happy 4th! Hard to be very proud of our country lately as we lose more freedoms every day under the corrupt Supreme Court. It was great to see your friends pull it off together for you! My sister always makes her coworkers dress in red, white and blue on July 4th. 😆 She really misses the celebration, living in England. Even after 20 years there!

First, I was born in the U.S., and I've never heard of "burger sauce." What was in it?
Second, I'm a lifelong Anglophile. I spent the summer of 1979 in England staying with a family in Hampshire. One morning at breakfast, everyone kept pointing out that it was July 4th, and I couldn't understand what they were getting at at first. I eventually realized, but I was so happy to be in England, it seemed irrelevant to me.
