    I was born in Spain, my parents are from Equatorial Guinea. I left Spain when I was 24 to come to live in the UK and I'm married to a Nigerian and I have young children who love Spain. To be honest, I love Spain but there are not even a quarter of the opportunities for us Africans there as there are in the UK. I experienced racism all my life, bear in mind that I was born there so no foreign accent or funny business. I was never considered Spanish.
    When I finish my studies I NEVER got a job that wasn't in a club or pub. No shops or other business would employ me once they saw my photo in my CV (Yes! You must add a photo).
    Nowadays, I only go there on holidays to enjoy the weather and the food.
    I might go back there to retire with my money coming from the UK though.

      I recommend to stay away from a country that hurt you so much.
      Instead of going in a holiday to Spain, you should go to the U.S.A.
      I highly encourage you to visit the South, you will feel at home.

      These comparison videos are always difficult because whatever opinion you express, they will be based on your personal experience and everybody’s experience is different. Outside my birth country, UK is the only other country I have lived in and I’ve never really felt the need to move out of the UK. Home is where your heart is indeed and UK is my home

    Aunty Flo, thanks for making this enlightening video. I enjoyed watching it. I’ve lived 11 years in the UK and I’m a practicing medical doctor here. I have studied here, married here and worked here, So I have a bit of knowledge of different aspects of the Uk. I would agree with the points about the weather and that it’s not as “touristy” if you’re not visiting London. I would also agree that Spanish people are more friendly, warmer and more bubbly than the UK.
    But...a few things to add from my limited experience. The UK is really more than London. London is quite expensive, in terms of cost of living and accommodation - I agree. But this is Just like say Madrid or any other capital city in Europe. There’s lots of other cities beyond London or cities close to London, which are brilliant to live with reasonable cost. I would also argue that the NHS has one of the best Health care systems in the world. I have been to a Spanish hospital whilst on holiday and I didn’t think there was any great difference to the system, however I was a tourist so I suppose that means I can’t fully comment on the usual system. I think the health care resources a GP surgery has access to here is dependent on the population in that area (ie older people, children, more disabled, more chronic health problems etc). I am a hospital doctor, and I still maintain that the health care system is top notch.
    I think we can’t really generalise the whole UK based on a few cities in the country.

    • @FloChinyere
      @FloChinyere  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Good to hear that the hospitals are top notch from someone who works there.
      Everything I said in this video is based on my experience not hearsay and I did issue a disclaimer that I did not use the health service that much. This is my experience as a patient and this perspective is very important too because we are the receivers of the service a.k.a the customers. And I did not generalize. It's impossible for me to sample every location in a country before sharing my experience. 😂 Experiences will always be based on where the person lived.

    1. Here in UK my kids study in English instead of the local pais vasco language that they teach kids in bilbao.
    2. I and my husband have a better pay Job here
    3. I am studying as a nurse here in UK which I never had the opportunity in spain
    But all the same Spain is my first love and my home
    4. Manchester UK weather is better than Bilbao Spain weather because it is freezing cold in bilbao that you can't use your keys to open the door. When it rains in Manchester you can walk without getting soak but bilbao 5mins you are totally wet.

In those positions you need a title and Spanish nationality, to work in any government position, and even so, you will have to compete to obtain the position, not only is it enough to have the title.

There are no much jobs opportunities here in Spain, which i don't like. They care more for the environment more in Spain than human beings. I work in the tourism sector here, and for some years now, that sector has paralysed because of covid.

      I can imagine how hard the transition must be for you. I'm sure I would have had the same story to tell if I've had to rely on employment in Spain because they don't recognize our qualifications here.
      COVID hit tourism the hardest all over the world and for a country that relies so much on tourism, it's bad. Hopefully with the vaccines, we are coming back to normal life. I hope and pray this summer and going forward will be better for you. 🙏 Good luck.

    Hey! Nice video
    Im a British Nigerian/Jamacain girl and I lived in Spain for almost two years. I won't lie a lot of what you said hurt a little because I am British and love my country but I'll be objective.
    I think Spain is much cheaper obviously, and you do get a lot for very little, in fact 400 pounds for a studio flat in London sounds incredibly cheap, most are like £1000 pounds. Also you are more likely to get much better weather, nicer living, scenery etc.
    Having said that. I honestly did not experience these really nice warm Spaniards you have mentioned. I also did not experience racism except for people assuming I work at markets and those bazaar shops and asking me for assistance. In England we're pretty insecure and don't like to bother people but if you approach us we will be smiley and friendly. In Spain, people would just bump into me and completely ignore me and not even apologise. Also the service staff at shops and banks are so rude and harsh with you and when you do your shopping they don't wait for you to collect your things they just start scanning the next customers items which can make you feel rushed, but I understand that is not a personal thing. Speaking of Banks, the service is SOOO slow and again they are just not friendly, many people in those jobs seem to think they are like gods or something.
    I was not used to the slow paced life at all coming from London. It was so inconvenient with all the shops closing in the middle of the day.
    I worked as an English teacher and so my experience is that the Spanish youth are overworked and they are just taught to memorise information but not truly take it in. Many of my students did not care about my lessons because they had so much on their plate with their studies, but having a level of English is mandatory for most jobs. Also so many of them are struggling to find work in their field and many are on really bad contracts and have no job security. In the UK there are so many entries into work, and ways to help people find work even if you don't have a degree you can work your way up but in Spain if you don't have a degree you have no chance.
    I also did not like the processes of many things, Spanish websites are so old and slow and god forbid you should need a Spanish criminal record certificate from another country! I needed one and it was near impossible, the Spanish consulate in London don't care and don't bother to help or have up to date information. So make sure you get it whilst you're in the country!
    The GPs are pretty standard in the UK, but not perfect by any means, and I did not use the doctors in Spain because I was a bit afraid, since my spanish at the time was not so good and I always felt like I was just wasting their time.
    You may not have felt there was racism but ask many latinos and you may hear a different story of their experience. Many of my students would freely make fun of Latin American people and say their spanish was not real spanish
    Overall the people I spent more time with were very nice and friendly and I think most people everywhere are if you take the time to get to know them. I agree it was soo safe in Spain! I loved that, but maybe it's because im a Londoner but I have never experienced any crime in London and don't feel the fear that the news makes London out to be some dangerous place.
    Also in Spain the young people drink twice as much as Brits and they never fight or go crazy, but in the UK the young British just can't control themselves and become like animals!
    In Spain they did have loads of holidays which was amazing, they had a holiday for everything and I loved el Puente!! I Love tapas culture and my cheap 2 bed apartment. In England life is really too fast paced, so much stress and maybe one day I would like to move to the Mediterranean or something but to be honest no where in the world is perfect so you have to make the best of what you got
    Besos desde Londres y tus hijos son muy monos xxx

      @FloChinyere  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Muchas gracias bluemoon por esto comentario y las parablas tan majas!
      You captured everything. O yes, nowhere is perfect and in this series, I have a video about what I miss about the UK and another about what I don't like about Spain coming up. I want to answer all these questions about where I live and where I have lived with these series of videos.
      That's what I meant when I said that the kids here are generally well brought up. They usually find a park and do their botellones in peace and would not bother anyone. I really admire the way most of their kids behave and I do adopt some of their parenting skills. I also noticed that the UK kids' heads cannot resistir altos niveles de alcohol. They drink 2 bottles and they are already off the chains. jajaja
      If you ask some blacks here, they will tell you that Spaniards are good to them, that it's South Americans that are racist towards them in their places of work. But really I was sharing my own experience and a few of my husband's.
      I guess the crime as portrayed in the news got to me in the UK because I just arrived, I was temporarily stationed in a small town with dark and lonely streets and my friends that already lived in London for a long time would warn me about going to certain parts in my search for Nigerian food ingredients. They knew I was ready to enter anywhere in my search in those days! 😂 It's just like the news coming out of Nigeria in recent times, Nigerians outside Nigeria are apprehensive but those that are on ground in Nigeria will always say that it's not as bad as portrayed in the news and on social media.

      True. In every country, you go in search of what you want to achieve. Due to Spain's autonomy of states, one state can have very strong economy while another, not so much. North of Spain: Pais vasco, Catalunya generally have strong economies more than many other places but some people would rather stay where they are lacking what they need.
      We live up north too because it's where the opportunities we need right now in our lives are. When we retire we will definitely move south. I would love to live close to the lovely beaches forever but for now, we will delay that gratification for what we want.

    i disagree that Nigerians mispronounce a lot of words. Just because one country may say it a certain way than Nigeria does not mean Nigeria's pronunciations are wrong. It simply means both places have their own way of saying it and it just boils down to the accent being different. But ofcos when your abroad since your from an "African" country they will tell you your own way of saying it is wrong.

    • @FloChinyere
      @FloChinyere  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      😂😂😂 But sis you can't say yours is correct when you are using their language nowww. It's just like how other tribes mispronounce ugu as ugwu. Our own pronunciation will always be the right one because we own the Igbo language.
      And please note that I'm not talking about accents here o. I'm talking about pronunciation. Eg Nigerians pronounce Wednesday as it is written: WEDNEZDAY. Some say WENEZDAY. But the correct pronunciation is wenzday. And many others.

    • @sandrambah123
      @sandrambah123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FloChinyereyes your correct regarding us using British English but I was referring to when you compared it to Spain. Maybe it depends on which part in Nigeria or school someone grew up or schooled in. I find myself pronouncing words the same way as British people do. Also, accent plays a role in how people say things just like in america the way they say my name "amaka" is right in a way but also tends to sound wrong because of their accent. I know in america they literally make foreigners feel their own English is wrong if you don't say it exactly how they do. But I get what where your coming ffrom.

    Great analysis. As a GP in the Uk 🇬🇧 i have been to different cities in Spain several times on holidays and i must say you can’t ever compare it to the Uk. I love Spain and hope to move there some day.
    In regards to the hospital setting vs GP i am not entirely sure if i agree with you in terms of primary health care vs secondary care because GP surgeries get funding based on the population they’re serving meaning what happens in London or Manchester may not apply in Cardiff for instance so while some surgeries will look like they don’t have equipment, others will look very equipped.
    Also remember a GP in the Uk has to see loads of patients per session in 10 mins or less, do millions of admin jobs and go see patients at home or in nursing homes.
    A GP in the Uk does almost 1 million jobs and you get home feeling like you’ve fought 100 people.
    I do agree with you though that seeing a specialist takes time and to be honest i think NHS is over stretched and understaffed.
    Any recommendations on how to learn Spanish would be appreciated as i have struggled with learning on TH-cam

      You might identify as racism some behaviours that are not. We are not fake like americans so we are not very open with unknown people and some say we are rude but that's just our way of speaking. Others also get incommodated when a person stares at them which is something normal here. Once you know a nice Spanish person you won't have to worry about fake friendships and in the security part, well crime rate is similar but Spanish police is way less aggresive, they almost never kill the person who should be arrested even if he/she is a murderer and has weapons.

      Juan staring at people is common everywhere. In Nigeria (especially in the villages) people stare at foreigners too even try to talk to them and it's not a bad thing. I don't know why some people see it as a bad thing. It's more often than not, admiration.

It sometimes means it but I don't think most of the times does.

      @FloChinyere  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I understood you the first time. I was just trying to assure you that it's not just Spaniards that do it. Here in Spain, some people have stared at me and called me exotica especially when I make traditional Nigerian hairdos and dress up in Nigerian clothes during the summer but some people will take that the wrong way.
      Just like you, I see it as people staring because they are curious, they saw someone different from the people they are used to and because the Spaniards are expressive like Nigerians, they will say something to the person as well. In a place like Norway, they will rather steal glances at you and they will not talk to you because they are not as expressive. So someone visiting Norway may say that they do not stare at people because they do not make it so obvious.

My Dad still regret all those 25yrs he lived in Spain.He has been in the UK for 7rs now.And he has built 2 houses in Nigeria since he moved here.Another thing is he has gained is Master degree in the space of this 7yrs. Brought me and my brothers here in the UK. He had supermarket in Spain several times. Guess what the Spanish people don't buy from here. Only blacks. Here in the UK. You have alot of opportunities. This made me laugh because so much of it is true - I'm from London and love it but I lived/worked in Spain for over a year. The causal attitude is so true! There would be a long line and staff would just carry on at the same pace and chat with each customer. I liked Spain and the property options are way better than in London! But I could not live in Spain for a long time or at least in the city I was in (Madrid as well). I noticed a lot of racism and miseducation about black people. Many people were really lovely to me especially once they heard my accent. They would ask me questions about where I can from and strike up a conversation. Others assumed I was a sex worker because I was black and many Spanish men displayed some horrible behaviour due to this stereotype.

    • @FloChinyere
      @FloChinyere  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes, their uneducated older, usually widowed men can have their vices. Capital cities also have their own issues.
      Where I live, even though fewer blacks and other foreigners live here, they are very aware of foreign cultures. There are lots of cultural integration programmes organised by the local council and the aim is to use such programmes to educate and expose their people to the cultures of people living in their midst. And the turn out is always huge. 👍

      @@a.muchemi4360 you seriously have an issue with me coming with a job? That's called planning. That's my own integration plan. My husband did not come to Spain with a job and he can NEVER describe Spain as horrible. It's shocking that you describe Spain as horrible yet you've been here for 20 whole years. It says a lot about you. We should stop with all this victim mentality because it holds us back. If you feel that strongly about Spain, to be honest it's better to go somewhere else. If you hate a land you live in this much, you will never make any progress. I prefer Spain but I will never describe the UK or any other place I have lived in as horrible.
      If you love a place, you will look for ways to push forward. Everything is about your mindset. In no country will you move to and immediately be integrated. There are so many things to do, studies, exams, qualifications and in the case of Spain, the language too. And not just speak passable Spanish, it must be high level for you to integrate into the job market and do any job you want. I speak very good Spanish but I still feel it's not enough to walk into a government office with this my level of the language and demand a job.
      I know young girls black girls that study nursing here. I met them at the hospital and I chatted extensively with them and they all have positive stories. The health sector is usually the hardest to break into in a new country but they are doing it! I know blacks who are into politics here and succeeding. I know first generation black immigrants whose children are doing great in sports. If you are good, you are good. Everywhere, immigrants have always had to work harder to get ahead. It's the same in the USA, UK, anywhere in the world. Nothing is handed over to you on a platter of gold.
      Change your circle of friends so you'll change your mindset and move ahead. Spain is trying for immigrants please. Gave most blacks papers from being illegal and eventually gave them nationality. UK cannot do that for Nigerians even though we are their ex-colony.

      @Louloo it seems you do really have a problem with people from other countries living in your own country! Understandable as it is, everyone has a choice of where to live and this liberty is guaranteed under the UNCHR. It is not for you to decide where anyone chooses to reside. Also the responsibility of assent for persons to migrate to any country lies in a state and not its citizens and it is governed by certain conditions.Also the world is a global village therefore its always better to have an open mind which is endeared to acceptance of people. Besides not everyone who resides in a country which isnt their country of origin is there because they're poor or underprivileged; People move for different reasons. Also people from your own country also move to other countries for their own reasons. It's best not to have a mindsetof stereotypes. A lot of Africans are law abiding, peaceful, intelligent, resourceful, financially stable and well traveled and not all of us want to migrate abroad.

Coupled with the fact that you have to speak their local dialect Mallorquin apart Spanish, though it was not compulsory, but anything that has to do with government or official matter is communicated and written in their own dialect. I don't know where you got your physiotherapy degree but you can't come to a country with such a degree and not practice for a whole 10 years, a decade! Then blame it on racism. If you got your degree in Nigeria, our degrees do not match up to theirs because you studied in English so you need to school here to measure up. Degrees from Equatorial Guinea measure up here because EG is their ex colony.
      I took a leave of absence and came to Spain on a visit visa for 6 months to test the waters. By then my husband also secured a UK work permit off mine. We had two options in case I can't integrate here work wise. I cannot come here with my Electronic Engineering degree without a plan. I loved it here and got myself a new job that would allow me live anywhere in the world before moving here. If it were impossible and my husband did not want to move to the UK, we wouldn't have married each other, it's as simple as that for me. Life moves are not random for me. I plan to the T.
      If you had done your research, you would have gone straight to the UK (if possible) to be honest so I don't get it when people tell me it's because I had a job. I researched and planned my life. Help yourselves people, the government of another country will not do everything for you. The government of your own country cannot even do everything for you. Even in the UK and the USA, people arrive, pack their Nigerian certificates one side, do odd jobs while they study to integrate.
      And I don't get what you mean by people wanted to study nursing and they were not allowed. I've met several Nigerians, either kids of first generation immigrants or wives that moved here to join their hubbies studying nursing here. I am not taking away from your experience but it's difficult for me to wrap my head around this story that this same country I live in denied people admission because they are black. Biko explain it to me.
      But then those 10 years sound familiar. Can I take a wild guess that without Spain you would not have ended up in the UK? 😉 If yes, then you got something worthwhile from Spain after all.
