- At Model Rail Scotland 2024 I bought another Whisky Grain Wagon for a fiver and an old Lima Class 37 (37 408 "Loch Rannoch"). I also acquired two new locos for birthday presents that will be revealed next month.

You are adding a whole new vocabulary to Railway Modelling what with Scoooshing , fluffage and manky brush , it's great keep it up .

I travelled from Ireland to attend Model Rail Scotland 2024 on Friday, purchased Class 37 number 37409 Loch Awe ! , amongst other purchases. picked up a lovely old metal chassis Lima class 20, with some cleaning and fettling runs like a dream.
It's impossible to have too many 37s, and the great value for money the Lima versions offer has allowed me to build up a fleet of them in differing liveries. And from 3 feet away - as demonstrated by your footage - it's not instantly obvious which is the Lima and which is the premium model. Nice to see old faithful blue diesel getting a run out too.
It was a bit of a shame that you didn't need to add pickups, as that would have been very interesting to watch.
With regards to a 2nd camera, perhaps us subscribers could crowd fund it? The best camera for close work I've seen is the one Sam uses on Sam's Trains.

I just remembered that I have (somewhere in my loft) a Hornby green class 37 (non-runner), which could be the first one that I try to repair following watching many of your videos !
Really is good to listen to you talking about older locos and the potential issues. We know it is a risk to purchase at shows and I like you always assume they are bad or non runners but prepared to have a go at getting them going again. Hence your videos are invaluable to aid in this. Keep em coming.
That whisky wagon looks like a Trix one that they also sold through Triang Hornby for a very short while, hence the odd coupling options. Very sought after and a total wipeout bargain at £5! I have an old Trix one just like this, and a plain grey one under the Lilliput mark. Dapol owned the tooling and Lilliputian name for ex-Trix models for a while, I seem to remember.
That 'Loch Rannoch' was quite the celebrity loco for a while. It either caught fire or had some kind of engine failure so ended up being scrapped, such a pity.
Gutted I missed you on Saturday. It felt busier on the Friday.
It was a great show and the Ellis Clark stand was full of some very good bargains. I managed to get a couple of engines for £20-£25 (Lima "Deltic" & Hornby "Mallard") and both appear to be happily working.
They sound like excellent bargains.
I've had exactly the same seized up issues with some of my fleet of Lima diesels. I'm sure it is the factory lubricant that dries up and seizes the works. The vast majority of my Lima diesels were purchased new but have been in store for a good number of years until recently when I built a small layout to run them on. Lima cl 37 and cl47 were far more convincing than the Hornby version. I wouldn't hesitate to buy more(at the right price). Compared to the new Hornby railroad versions the original Lima models are much heavier and are more service friendly.
I have a few Limas that would rival the running of anything more modern. A bit detail poor compared to the latest locos, but for their time, they can run astonishingly well.
Those couplings that you fitted to your new whisky wagon are Mainline ones.

I like the whiskey train - I have a beer train on my layout! The coupling is an old Mainline/Bachmann coupling. I love the old Lima 37s. Ive also got one on the workbench for CD motor replacement, DCC socket, Ultrascale wheels and extra pickups. Great job as ever. If I get a small component falling on the floor I use a portable builders floodlight to make the part shine a bit and comb the floor with my hands while wearing reading glasses. I find most of these flyaways!
Yeah, it's the Bachmann one. It's an old Trix TT sculpt that was upscaled. Rather poorly at that, which is why it's smaller than the others in the rake.
A magnet scan can help for appropriate items, resistors diodes capacitors screws springs etc.
It was great to meet you on the Saturday at model rail at the SECC, I wish I had got your autograph too. Hope you will come to the model rail how at Pollokshaws Hall on the last weekend of October and also to the Paisley model rail show in December.
Lima made grain wagons in several liveries, I have a couple of "VAT69" in grey but they also did a green, they also did a "Black & White" in a striking yellow with blue chassis, they made a red one but cant remember if it was a whisky livery.
Great video, I actually have this exact model bought by my dad for me as a present when I was younger. Fan of your work and you also have similar views. I think Lima stuff was great in the 80s & 90s and now great value now too which is a bonus and most models live on in Hornby railroad range albeit with new motors. So I do also keep an eye out for discounted railroad items, example being class 40 and class 66 which I got for les than £70 new while used lima items can go for £40-50 anyway. Was going to say all lima 37s have the extra pickup and Im currently retro fitting 37 bogies to replace the HO bogies on my lima class 50 fleet and they take it well with minor chassis mods. Unfortunately it means cannibalising a lima tractor but it really improves running and accuracy of the model, only issue is steps in the wrong place.

Minor point - right at the end you put the body on inverted - the central step next to the scottie dog is a clip also, and this is offset to fit one way. Good to see another of these older stalwarts refreshed for another life!
I completely agree about the Lima diesels my class 37 runs great but is missing two buffers, which are terribly hard to find here in the U.S.

Great video bill 👍 I had the same problem of the lubricant acting like glue on a lima class 55 . I had it from new . So it must be the lima lubricant sets over time. Keep up the great work bill 👏 👍
Good video, could you fit a cd motor into your apt and led head/taillights.. that would look great zooming around your layout, I think you have brought a class 29.....
I have this class 37 Loch Rannoch, but mine is the Bachmann one, Class 37s are perhaps my all time fave UK Diesel locomotive, and I really like them in this livery, but as I am/was not very well travled, I never got to see one in this livery in everyday use, it was only at The Class 37 at 50, event at the Railway Museum in York where I got to see 37025 Inverness TMD in this Large logo livery, I (and others) got to haave a little drive of it,... well worht it if you can get to have a go in a real one!
Either a Strathclyde liveried 107 or 156, and a ScotRail liveried class 47/7, are my guesses.
Could not possibly agree more if I tried - there’s no such thing as too many when it comes to 37s. Mine tend to be 1980s Hornby affairs though, including my fave loco in my whole collection - William Cookworthy.
The 37 is lovely bill amongst many other models I have on my layout my limas are up there if your going to fit a cd motor why not fit a lighting pack it's not that hard especially for you it would transform the 37 looking forward to your two new locos 👍
Not sure what time you were in Glasgow, and it was busy when I arrived too, but it quietened down about 4 o'clock. I didn't go daft, but my brother in law snagged a few bargains too. He has about thirty 37s and he's got to try and make sure to get one he hasn't already got! ;-) Cheers

Another word for the vocabulary (more Scottish phrase than railway modelling mentioned in previous comments) is "ah jings" which I assume is just like "ah damn"? Curious to know it's origins.
Separately, can confirm: you wouldn't think just standing around for a few days as an exhibitor at a model show would be so tiring but it definitely is!
The Whisky Wagon with the Peco coupling is probably Trix. They made some for Triang and then issued them under their own lbel
Hi Bill…nice loco. Lima’s are always good value.
I’ve done a bit of research and 37 408 was built at EE’s Vulcan Works in 1964-65 with a work No. 3549/D978. She was introduced to traffic in June 1965 and given running no. D6989. Renumbered 37 289 in Feb 1974 and then to 37 408 in Aug 1985. She was named Loch Rannoch in Sept 1986. Apparently she was originally assigned to Ebbw Junction (86A) in South Wales. It is not clear when she found her way to Scotland, but obviously she made the trip up from Wales at some point in her long life.

Great Video Bill thank you. I just love old Lima diesels and luckily the ones I've picked up at railway shows run but it is a bit of a lottery. I went to the railway show on the Friday and picked up a Southern liveried Bullleid West Country Class Pacific with a five pole motor for a good price that runs a treat but it isn't always the case

A nice loco and wagon. Great running session too. I have 37408 in my collection (along with several others!). I always disable those extra pick ups because I find the skewed middle axle nearly always derails when going over my peco sl94 crossings.

I was there on Friday and its very busy and I was exhausted when I looked around and I buy three new locos, a coach nickle silver points and new two road engine shed twin for I will make a 4 lane or 6 lane. One loco I got class 08 D3336 from bachmann it has no motor and no wheels and no red side rod. I got a class 37 loch Rannoch as well, and it's 37012 and split headcode from Dundee model railway show back in October 2022
Next exhibition I might find and buy is twin track controls I pick Vector or Duette

Re locos at train shows - take a 9V battery with you to test.
they are on the newer lower gear models, which ironically are actually better runners
Meet and greet ?
A good tip is to take a 9V PP3 battery with you to a show so that you can do a quick test on a loco or tender by putting it across the wheels and looking for life. No sign of movement then you can put it back or negotiate the price. Any decent seller at a show won’t refuse to do this, if they do then walk away.
My sisters are daft but they wouldn’t be caught dead with me at a model railway exhibition . I think it might be my Thomas flag and whistle - so well done there . Sorry missed you as I liked the exhibition so much I was there every day . These Lima diesels scrub up really well . Just a bit noisy !

If I’m buying second hand, I alway take a 9 volt battery and a few wires with crocodile clips with me. If it doesn’t work, you can say it’s a non runner and barter with the seller.

My tip ; if you go to a show with the intention of purchasing S/H locos , Carry a 9 volt battery with you .

Another cracking video and a Class 37 fest at that too. I was gonna ask, if you'd tinker into the idea of giving 37408 directional lighting. I have a feeling I might know the answer already but thought I ask regardless. I'm guessing you got a new steam engine, maybe a saddle tank and I'd also like to think you got yourself a 26 or 27 or even a ScotRail 47/7 proper Scottish diesel loco. Guess I'll have to wait. I find Lima to be Awesome VFM and would much rather take a punt at 20-35 quid, and be prepared to have a Tinker with it - I do have One Hornby Loco that was Brand new, but I’m scared to get it out the box cos it’s so delicate in my Meaty Paws - I look forward to watching the “Can” Motor Upgrade. Have you noticed that there is a buffer missing?
Over the last three years or so since I got back into the hobby I've bought around 150 Lima diesels and have had several with this issue. The gears are designed to be self-lubricating and so personally I leave them that way, but there appears to be people out there using a totally inappropriate lubricant. The other issue I had on one locomotive which is related was what appeared to be a piece of ballast that had been thrown up into the grease and captured by it. The piece of ballast then made it's way between the gears and locked the whole thing up solid.
I do love the Lima 'pancake thrash' from these engines, although I realise that you don't. In the past I have reversed the CD motor 'modification' on a couple of engines using my mountain of spares and just thrown the CD motor gear away. If I do anymore I may well send them your way - although I shudder at the thought of anymore being converted!! (lol)

As someone else has said, your newly purchased whisky grain wagon is almost certainly from the Trix range. Trix used the Hornby Dublo style of coupling. If you can track down a Trix catalogue from around 1969 you’ll find a whole page (from distant childhood memory) of these wagons labelled with different whisky brands. You’ve a fair few more to find and collect yet!
