Upon entering Deeper Well the friends begin to forget about Basil. At this point the limitations of the Dream were starting show like tears in fabric. Further along in Humphrey they forget entirely. If you talk to Mari to check incomplete quests, finding Basil is no longer a quest.

    • @roninnozlo9544

The quest is then replaced by the one about the empty house.

Yeah I noticed that. The quest is to explore an abandoned house that they forgot was Basil's. It's kinda sad and a little creepy that even Mari forgets and just treats Basil's house as a creepy place to explore

This whole game was fucking incredible but something about Deeper Well... hit different. It's one of the most tense parts of the game, and not for any gameplay reason. It's hard to endure as this song plays over the visuals because you know what's happening. You get told exactly what this place is. This is the deepest level of repression. This is the physical representation of what it's like when, in all your attempts at escapism... you actually get away.
You've already dug your hole. You're just sitting in it. You're at the bottom of the world.
You watch all of your friends who love and care about you forget. Forget about Basil. About the horrible things you did. They're smiling at you and telling you that everything's going to be okay, because you're having fun. They're telling you that because they don't know. And look around you. This is the worst it's ever been.
    It's dark.
Everything is shapes you can barely see.
    Shapes you don't understand.
Shapes telling you things you don't want to hear.
There's noises in the dark that don't make sense.
You can outrun them by going deeper.
But the deeper you go, the worse they get.
And your friends, they're afraid for you, and they're confused, and they don't know why you're doing this. They don't know why you're making them suffer. Why you're making them watch YOU suffer.
Remembering the truth is agonizing. But the most horrifying thought of all is what would happen if you let yourself forget.

Something to note about Deeper Well is that Mari rarely, if at all, appears. She’s there in Humphrey because, well, Humphrey is more grounded in Headspace then most of Deeper Well is. But I think her absence is a perfect sign that yes, you got away. What you did is completely and utterly absent here, you’ve fully gotten away from your past and your trauma. You’ve run as far as you possibly can.

Possibly the most clever thing I've seen in a Video Game. Slowly forgetting about a character, OMORI started to build hate toward Basil (refer to black space) and wanted to forget him, meaning he was entirely removed from the DREAM World, his house wasn't Basil's house anymore, but rather just a creepy house. Even the quest of finding Basil seemingly disappears from the Ongoing quests and you slowly notice how the gang is losing memories on who Basil is. This game is deep. This game is awesome.

my interpretation is that they HAD to forget basil. forgetting basil wasn't a bad thing, much to the contrary, it was necessary. basil, and by extension headspace basil, yearns for salvation and ignorant peace, unlike "stranger" which is his cast away side. the whole misson of the kids, to find and save basil, is a mission to preserve the happiness in sunny's "dream", burdening omori with all the darkness, and to reject facing the truth. that's why, in the game's regular route, omori kills headspace basil. unlike in the alternate route, he isn't trying to protect the happy dream of a secluded sunny, he is bringing the whole farce down and attempting to reach out to sunny and confront him.

Ironically thats why pictures and photos are so important. They are the best way to instantly regain your memories about something because of how memory actually works in our minds. Like when you're going through a photo album and how you're suddenly remembering all the memories you haven't thought about for years. You didn't forget them, hell you didn't propably forget the people on the photos at all, but the photos DID made you remember those specific memories and days they were taken. Its why i love that the truth is uncovered through photos. It's like Sunny is experiencing exactly what i just described.

ive had anxiety and depression my entire life. though i havent experienced the hell that would be losing a sibling, and i hope i never have to, this song just.. perfectly encapsulates that feeling of dread and emptiness depression brings, as well as the lost, uncertain feeling it can give someone when they sink so far down into sadness that the things around them, as well as themselves, are unrecognizable. unsure of oneself or their surroundings. i feel the song can go in two ways, as well: someone who is uncaring for how deep they have sunk, or someone who has recognized how deep they have fallen into depression and are desperately trying their hardest to find a way out as to not drown.
anxiety is also handled near flawlessly in this game. i havent related to anything like this in a long time, and quite honestly, though i havent beaten it yet, i think i needed this game and still do.

This music fits so well in the cutscene after Humphrey because it invokes the feeling of having nothing else to do, nothing else to accomplish. From the Headspace character's perspective, it felt like they looked for Basil so hard they ended up stranded in an oceanic hellscape far away from home, their calm and beloved Neighbor's Room. It doesn't help the fact that the place is like 3 layers of deep ocean dungeons, starting from the shore in the stump bifurcation, the lovely place where you and your friends built sandcastles at the very beginning of the game, and ending in none other than Humphrey, which is quite possibly the weirdest secret laboratory society run by whale tongues the gang could ever find themselves stuck in finding their lost friend. And if that wasn't enough, by that point they already forgot why they were there in the first place.

I don't know why but deeper well is my favorite area of the game along with orange Oasis. It's very nostalgic yet dreadful. Just the feel of this area fascinates me. You're at the edge. The edge between black space and headspace. Something about the feeling of going deep but not being THERE yet (the truth) is indescribable. So much dismay, so much anticipation. The dream will soon end, basil no longer exists here and you are running out of time before the reality you are confortable with dissappears entirely. Better pick up the pace then.
    D R E A M E R
Ps: I'm also biased since I love anything relating to the deep ocean. It's just something I've had since I was little. I'm terrified of it though which is why I don't like going to the beach. It's weirdly contradicting.

i love this theme, its such a strong representation of what its really like getting super close to uncovering the really dark and dangerous secrets about yourself. (spoilers) The more I think about it, the more deeper well makes sense. Several npcs say that black space was buried underneath mindspace. If we are to take this literally, since deeper well is the lowest point of mindspace, it's the closest part of mindspace to black space, which could be why most of deeper well's inhabitants seem aware of what "the dreamer" is doing and why the area itself is so creepy and psychedelic. It's because black space is influencing this section of mind space. Deeper well is the part just before the back of your mind, where you dangle above every single one of your regrets by a thread. Plus, notice how beneath deeper well in some parts is a completely black void? And keep in mind that black isn't an often-used color in headspace aside from important plot things like omori himself or the somethings (everything that should be black like Mari's hair is instead blue). The void of deeper well may be a gateway to black space. Perhaps black space's influence is why the deeper well causes people to lose their memories. And that also brings up another question. If Basil's flower crown is found in one of the rooms where the void is present, does this mean that Basil almost found his way out in one of his revivals? Sorry if I explained that weirdly I'm bad at explanations. Also, sorry if I sound pretentious, I just really got into writing.

    This area man
Everything starting from 2 days left's night is crafted to perfection, but Deeper Well has to be my favorite section in terms of atmosphere and story. The tension build throughout Deep Well and Underwater Highway so subtle, but prods at your mind just enough; the opening with Mari and without any of the party is off putting, and I personally couldn't ever quite shake the uneasiness that came with it, even after the dream world gave a valid reason for it. There's also the holes in the world, both under keys and just around, that pop up more and more frequently, and show you that this world is starting to buckle.
Then you get to Deeper Well itself, and that quiet uneasiness comes straight to the forefront. Everything just feels a little bit wrong: the music is suddenly very empty, almost calm but still discordant. Every color is just a little too saturated, like in a surreal nightmare, and the NPCs are not only rarer, but much more abstract and almost otherworldly, giving the impression that you've left the familiar world behind. That lonely feeling is amplified by your friends starting to forget about Basil, making them feel distant. The whole place is a maze, with tight corridors and no clear indication of if you're going the right way.
And right as the uneasiness starts to get to you, this song hits.
The first chord completely overwhelms me every single time I listen to it. It's like the music itself is trying to drown your memories away, and each chord is another wave crashing on you, another attempt to wash you away. And as soon as you start getting used to them, the drumbeat comes in, and it's so perfect because without context, it kind of gives the song some more structure, something to ground yourself to. But in the game, it just keeps building on that anxiety; no matter what you do, this place and this song are going to consume you eventually. Especially when the drum is replaced by a schloop kinda sound, it reminds me of the sound you hear being stuck underwater.
The first half of Deeper Well warned you of what was coming. The second half is when it's too late to turn back. The only way now is to keep pushing. And hope you make it through before you break.

  • @a.k8185
    @a.k8185 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The "forget Basil" tactic was actually quite clever.
It's unsettling seeing all the characters begin to forget about him, from "The Appearance" argument at Last Resort, to a mention of how he even looked like.
In the end, they forget their goal, and the remains of Basil are treated as something they *used* to be aware of, such as his garland and the name "basil" triggering confusion by distorted memories.
Eventually, they stopped reacting to his name, even Mari stopped, who was generally "the most aware" one, from the Lost Library in Pyrefly woods, to pushing Omori towards exploring, resulting in unearthing the truth.
But now she has forgotten it too, as indicated by the removal of his quest.
However she still smugly suggest Omori to enter The Haunted House, which still means that she serves her role, aware or not.
The fact that Basil "dissappeared" from everyone's memory isn't forgotten entirely by the game either: during the BlackSpace sections, the last one has The ""Friends"" brutally fracture Basil's head in a somewhat sadistic matter.
    Okay, ending the rant here.

The first year of the pandemic took so much from me; I lost my friends from petty drama, and online school devoured my free-time. I’d spend hours watching livestreams and commenting for some hint of socialization, and feel my depression worsen after every stream that ended. For that whole year, I really was Sunny; isolated and alone. (Well, minus the Something trauma of course.) I’ll admit, the second year of the pandemic wasn’t much better. I gained weight, I became lost in self hatred, and I marked up my wrist with a razor for the first time since my ex. Although I didn’t play Omori myself, just watching a let’s play was enough for it to really mess with me. All of the negative feelings that had built up from the pandemic erupted, and on Valentine’s day last year I was a fucking mess.
But despite the all the dark shit I just talked about, I’m here on a happy note. Today is the one year anniversary of me reaching out and getting professional help. Omori was my stepping stone to getting there. It helped push me to admit that I was struggling. To stop pushing away the bad feelings, to stop drowning myself in self hatred and isolation. And even though it hurt like hell, I didn’t succumb. Now, my life has gotten so much better. I’ve gotten accepted to college, I’ve lost weight, and I even have a Valentine this year. I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to play Omori myself , and even if I do the Truth won’t hit as hard as it did the first time I learned it. But at the very least, I wanted to acknowledge that just like Sunny, you don’t have to succumb. You have the strength to keep going, and don’t ever forget that. Say Happy Valentine’s day to yourself, because you’re alive right now. That’s a damn good reason to celebrate.

I dont know why this soundtrack isnt talked about more. It just does such a great job of showing the beginning of the end of sunny’s brutal repression of his guilt with the hard synths blaring a tonal shift that screams its message: This adventure needs to end. Set yourself free. The imposing skull just makes me wonder if humphrey was just spiteful enough to create such a blatant symbol of death that would make omori break his neutral expression, or omori was at his wit’s end of discouraging sunny from finding the truth of this world. What all of these colorful pastel colors are trying to do. Omacat really executed the climax of headspace well, love this so much.

  • @applesthehero
    @applesthehero ปีที่แล้ว +4

When I first played through this area, I was disappointed by the anticlimactic ending for headspace (SPOILERS)...
I was playing the Sunny route, so headspace ended with your friends forgetting their quest, and the villains getting unceremoniously eaten by a hungry whale... but as I found out what happens on the Omori route, where you find they actually survive and there's quests to make everything better I realised. It was anticlimactic because this is headspace *falling apart* as Sunny starts to accept reality and overcome Omori. Nothing here gets a happy ending, because nothing here actually *matters*, and Sunny has realised that. To want a happy ending here is to want to escape further from reality, as Omori does... and as happens on the Omori route. So I was no longer disappointed. This is perfect.

I don’t know about you, but it feels like Omori wanted everyone to forget Basil.
Omori was created by Sunny to essentially distance Sunny from remembering the truth. At the beginning of the game, Basil “found” a photo of Mari’s body hanging from the tree, which would pose a threat to Omori as well as Sunny finally remembering the truth. So, Basil just kind of disappears from Headspace. Gradually, everyone begins forgetting him, including his friends. It begins at Last Resort, but the erasure of Basil from everyone’s mind isn’t complete until the Deeper Well.
I’d like to think that Omori was the only person in Headspace who completely remembered Basil, but he didn’t want to remind everyone about him because Omori saw Basil as a threat to his entire purpose of being Sunny’s guardian of the truth.
