    For those of you watching this wondering about purchasing a short scale bass, I am not a student, a child, or a guitar player, and I have average-sized hands, but I bought a Squier Jaguar SS short (30") scale because it sounds great, has a comfortable reach, feels good against my body (much like a Jazz), and is light to wear on my shoulder. After playing it and listening to it, I don't know why people need a 34" neck on their basses, unless perhaps they have large hands. All things equal, the strings will be a little looser (which some people might prefer), but you can tighten them up (reducing fret rattling) by getting heavier gauge strings and/or flatwounds, which require more tension.

      @alexanderking9462 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      i came here to say this. i am quite new at playing bass and started on a frankly very heavy full sized bass and couldn't play for more than a little while at a time due to the weight, picked up a short scale which weighed less than a third of what I started with and found it much easier.

    • @McDoinky
      @McDoinky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      ... Or you can just get short scale strings. Do people not know about short scale strings? I feel like no one ever acknowledges the fact that they’re a thing.

      I'm 16, I bought the short scale bass cause the regular sized ones make me look like I'm holding a bloody tree. Yes, I'm awfully short.

    • @kijekuyo9494
      @kijekuyo9494 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

       @krisnackles ʕ•ع•ʔ I'm short, too, and it really makes a difference in appearance. The body of my Jaguar SS also has a rather streamlined look compared to the Jazz and Precision, which adds to the effect.

    Short-scales: for beginners like Paul McCartney and Stanley Clarke. Common guys, you're great players but you might want to look into things a little bit.

    • @Jacob-Laeby
      @Jacob-Laeby 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Jack Bruce and Mike Watt never really got anywhere with their bass playing because of the fact that they both played short scale basses. Another cautionary case is Justin Medal-Johnsen, what an absolute beginner hack bass player. Also what is even a beginner bass, sure beginner bassist makes sense, but how does an instrument become a beginner?

      I find it annoying that they continually say these instruments are for kids when there are many famous pros who play short scale. They say the same thing on their other short scale bass video. I thumbed it down but youtube counts any interaction as a good thing and it helps to make the video more suggested. So it's worse for the channel if you don't vote at all.

    • @christocr
      @christocr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the sound you want. My Mustang sounds tons better with rounds, and kind of muffled and dead with flats. My P-bass on the other hand sounds pretty good with flats. The shorter scale on the Mustang seems to take some of the clarity and definition away when using flats. The first thing I did when I got a JMJ Mustang was switch it to rounds. It sounded killer with rounds. (I've since traded it for another Mustang because I didn't like the baseball bat size neck compared to most all other Mustangs)

    • @CrystaIian1
      @CrystaIian1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      100%. normal scale basses have harmonics that ring out, giving it more mid and high tones. Short scales have the most fundamental frequency ringing out, thus giving the thickest low end. Short scales would definitely work more with pop music today, since it is more about the sub-presence than the actual tonality.

    As soon as they started saying that shorties are just for kids and beginners you know they’re a couple of wankers that have no idea what they’re talking about.

      It actually sounds like a BASS, LOL. If a bass can't produce that kind of low end, it's not for me.

    So I've heard a couple of people tell me that the shorter the scale the thicker the low end. Can anyone verify that is true? I do remember seeing a local all girl band from San Fernando Valley, CA ...bassist had a Danelectro Longhorn, I believe a short scale bass and seeing that band live, that bass BOOMED.

      In general, this is true.

      You get much less of the high overtones you typically get from a full size bass because of the shorter string length, and that emphasizes the lower frequencies.
