    Being an English teacher is something I am entitled with but when it is to talk about phrases, I really fail here badly.
    It's difficult for me to identify different types of phrases especially when I appear for some competitive exams.
    I tried searching for some explanatory videos several times but ended up with people like me.
    This is the best one I must say which helped me to get into it much deeper.
    Thank you so much Ashish❤️

    • @EnglishWithAshish

      A noun phrase is formed using a noun (headword) and its premodifiers and postmodifiers. Note that an adjective clause can function as a postmodifier in a noun phrase.

    Can you guys correct me for finding the NPs ? I used bold style to show NPs
    And Is it possible for a sentence to include 2 noun phrases ?
    1. *The woman I told you about yesterday*
    2. *The trouble with young people*
    3. In San Francisco, the parent company of Dollar Rent a Car and Thrifty Car Rental charge roughly 20 percent more for the Prius than for *other economy or compact areas*
    4. *The high markups* are largely a result of supply and demand.
    5. *Hybrid cars, which are also in short supply in the retail market,* cost rental car companies more to buy than other vehicles.
    6. *I found choosing an economy car over a hybrid* to be the most economical choice.
    7. *A two day trip from San Francisco to Yosemite National Park* was $ 55 cheaper with the Hyundai Accent economy car.

    • @EnglishWithAshish
      @EnglishWithAshish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, absolutely. You can have many NOUN PHRASES if your sentence is complex.
      These are great sentences. Just a correction: in the fifth sentence, the first one is phrase, and the second one is a relative clause.
      Note: the part without commas is not a part of your phrase; it's s clause.
      Hope it helps!

Here, I am to suggest a few corrections in the presentation. 1) this, that, these, and those are demonstrative adjectives but you mentioned this as distributive adjectives. 2) the heading ‘Positive of a noun phrase’ should be ‘Position of a noun phrase’ in that slide. I don't think so that gerund can modify another noun rather than being present participle or reduced adjective clause modifying the noun being more reasonable since gerund consider as a noun that noun can't be adjective unless compound noun .Do you agree with me?

    • @EnglishWithAshish
      @EnglishWithAshish  ปีที่แล้ว

    Sir Thanks For this detailed lesson I just have one query about it, When we add a relative clause as a post modifier, Doesn't it Contradict the definition of "Phrase" as it now has a subject and a verb?

    • @EnglishWithAshish
      @EnglishWithAshish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it does not. It's not the subject of the phrase; it's the subject of a clause working as an adjective in the phrase.

    Can you please tell me if there are any noun phrases here? They would discover that the water exists permanently, cycling through different states of matter as it travels on its adventure through so many different aspects of the earth. Thanks!!

      It has a few noun phrases in it:
      1. The water
      2. Different states of matter
      3. It's adventure
      4. So many aspects of the earth

      Thank you for your response: I am still confused about these words in the sentence: PERMANENTLY, CYCLING THROUGH. Also, does this sentence contain a relative clause? I see that after discover there is a THAT. Thanks again!!

    I've watched your other video on pre and post modifiers and you haven't included all of them. Are these the only types? Plus some of these pre and post modifiers that can form a noun clauses are not in the video i just mentioned, such as numbers as pre modifiers and gerund phrase phrases as post modifiers. Please explain this.
    Very good video!!!

      Numbers is mentioned. Gerund phrases can't modify a noun; they work as nouns. Participles can; they are mentioned.

    awesome! sir, I am your fan. sir in the sentence "the man standing next to you" you have said that standing acting as a gerund and sir gerund is a verbal that replaces the noun but here it is modifying a noun I think it should be a participle. sir, please clear this concept I always get in trouble whenever I have to separate noun or adjective in like these sentences. thanks

    • @EnglishWithAshish
      @EnglishWithAshish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Means a lot!
      Yes, that's a present participle, not a gerund. I made a mistake there.

    Hi,Ashish.Thanks for the explanation.I have just come across a very nice sentence in my student's book."Then,there is the Deli Hall that contains 17 delicatessens offering cuisine from many countries including France,Italy,Greece,Japan and Poland as well as a range of other shops selling cakes,bread,coffe and pasta. As far as I understand,the part that starts after "is" is the subject complement.Is it correct?

    • @EnglishWithAshish
      @EnglishWithAshish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Syntactically, yes. It would be the subject complement.

    Do I understand it right that when I use possessive adjective before noun (e.g. My book) it is an adjective not a pronoun? Pronoun is when I use e.g. Talk to her (and her stands for an object in the sentence and "You" which is not in the sentence present is a subject?). Thanks for any clarification.

    • @Matezak
      @Matezak 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or those "possessive adjective" should be pronouns and it's only a typo?

    • @EnglishWithAshish
      @EnglishWithAshish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When it stands alone, it's a pronoun. And when it is followed by a noun, it's an adjective.
      His car is amazing. (Possessive adjective)
      His is an amazing car. (Possessive pronoun)

      Dear Ashish , I want to ask a question as it is really haunting me. In a noun phrase we see gerund phrase coming just after noun. But, what if the modifier is a participle phrase. Will it still be a noun phrase ? And how to differentiate participle and gerund phrase , it looks so similar.. I also saw your video on gerund phrase but was not able to understand the difference. Please help me

    • @EnglishWithAshish
      @EnglishWithAshish  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's quite simple, Abhishek.
      A gerund phrase, a phrase works as a noun, does not come right after a noun; it never does. On the contrary, a present participle phrase comes right after a noun.
      • (Smoking weed) is quite common among students. {Subject}
      • I love (talking to my friends). {object of the verb LOVE}
      Look at these sentences now:
      • The guy (smoking weed) is quite popular in our college. {Coming after the noun GUY)
      SMOKING WEED isn't the subject here. It is simply modifying the simple subject "guy".
