Making Recharge well for Ground Water Recharge

  • Few decades back, ground water essentially meant water in the Open well. The depth of the well was anywhere between 15 to 50 feet.
The advent of the Bore-well or the tube well pretty much erased the culture of open wells in India.
However, Shallow aquifer or open well still finds a lot of significance in the overall context of water management.
Recharge well is also an Open well. The only difference is , in; a recharge well, we use the cavity(well) in the earth to push the water collected from clean catchments like Rooftops into the ground.
The recharge well pushes the water into what is called an "unconfined aquifer". It is the water available in the soil pores . On consistent recharge into the unconfined aquifer, the soil around the well gets saturated and the water starts to come back into the well making it a source of water.
It is also possible that during the excavation process, one can find water (As in this case) . In such cases that same well can be used for Recharge as well as a withdrawal.
Shallow wells or open wells or unconfined aquifer is an excellent option for rainwater harvesting . Water from these wells have the least energy footprint.
Reviving the culture of open wells will go a long way in ensuring water security and reducing pollution.

Great job! Could you share with us well water composition before applying rainwater recharge ?

Hi. How r u? I have a 65 feet deep, dried ,stone walled well in my house. My boundary wall is right above the wall of the well. I want to use this well for underground water recharging. Please advise me, what should i do?

Can we do it near column only 1 feet away from column?

    क्या आप बता सकते है कि इस प्रोजेक्ट को लगवाने में कितना खर्च आया है

Is it ok if we install the ring well near building ? I mean I only have 3 feet space from the building to the compound wall.

If it is a load bearing wall, you can . If it is a frame structure, not advisable if you have only 3 feet .

@Hinren Engineering It's a frame structure that sits on clay. we had excavated the clay and filled the spaces with sand. My engineer told me that since it's delta region with clay.. technically all the buildings are sitting on wet ground and it wouldn't make any difference but I just want to be sure that I'm doing the right thing

Why do you use a concrete ring for well?
Can we use plastic pipe also?

Hmmm, why you will feed rainwater directly to recharge the ground water without building an approved aquifer? One must use layers of sand, coal etc to remove impurities from the rain water to stop any contamination of the ground water.

@@Pushapwant Well, what is the point in making a cavity and closing with the so called "filter media". Earth is the best filter . When we make a lake or a pond to divert rainwater, do we fill it up with the media? Also I am not sure what is an approved aquifer and who approves it ?
Nevertheless, this well in question is used to collect Tye rooftop rainwater after filtering through an on ground rapid sand filter .
