One of my favourite songs. It was playing on the radio in 1980 just after a nasty thunderstorm. I was staring up at the clouds while listening to this. Never forgotten that moment.
I remember this from June and July 1980, when it was out in the U.K.. I was only young at the time, 4 years old. My family said this was a very thundery period in England, and June was particularly hot and humid at the start with severe thunderstorms. This song captures the atmosphere of a humid thundery summer, or warm sunny summers day.
We don't remember anything before we were born. We won't remember anything after we die. Maybe life is just remembering, and all we have in the end are memories. Bless you
I feel pretty silly never hearing of this song or the Korgis...I was a child of the 60s 1980 ..ya I was still in love with my 60s n early 70s music. The Cars where a cool band n Talking Heads n Tom Tom Club.. I don't want to be an all 80s snob..lol I wonder if it was released regionally? I grew up in West Hollywood but don't remember it on the radio...lol. that's great that we here knew the radio n albums, cassette n 8track. Great song .. I'm not sure if the first string instrument he played was an oriental string zither of some sort ? Violin was beautiful too .. Made it !
Does any one know/remember in which film it occurs? O.k. I know it might have been used in quite some films since the '80s, because of it's true and universal message,
In 1980 I was a teenager. I fell in love with someone who would marry my sister. THANK YOU UNIVERSE!!!! What a very dull life I would have led. Stable af but a formaldehyde bath. Grateful 🙏 💜
15 years old when this first played on bbc radio 1 ,tough year ,left school, started work ,how things change ,still listen to this regularly, have to wonder how many songs of today will be remembered in years to come .
I bought their first album in 1978 and had been impressed with them. Then when this came out in 19080...I was floored and I was thrilled that they finally had a hit in the USA. I was working in small town radio at the time and played it as much as I could.
It may not be the most challenging lyrically, but, amazing music, and great vocals. Never bettered. The Korgis original is by far a country mile ahead of all the cover versions.
I haven't been born yet, and the song I only heard for the first time today has already been heard! Incredible! Thank you. And this morning I congratulated my friend on her birthday with this song. Really incredible!
First time I heard of this song when I was in high school. I immediately liked it! Our local radio station would play it non-stopped, like every hour! The melody was pure hypnotic, you paused wondering, still listening, and the song gets going but you wanting to know more what's gonna come up to the song, and the singer started those words beautifully, singing, "Everybody's gotta learn sometimes." I was bought! Somehow something back in my head it is interpreting that we are indeed humans learning our lessons no matter who you are, and somewhat this song puts me right there "in my place." Such classic song, well done! It stays on you, out of the blue today, I was looking for this song!
It never even occurred to me that Beck didn't write this. Just now the song popped into my head and I looked it up on TH-cam. Found this. 🤯Still picking bits of brain out of the curtains.
Do you know something, I never knew how much I loved this song til I heard it again on tv (U.K.) ashes to ashes , I’m sure Gene Hunt loves this too ,I think when you have left school n got you’re first girlfriend n made mistakes in life then look back on this song ,you finally realised you’ve understood & learnt more 💖💖
The version I prefer is this one. With most true instruments in perfect balance with the synth and voice : the violin used three ways and one of these looks like saxophone amazing... What a sweetness and intimacy thank you James Warren !
First heard this song as an early hardcore breakbeat track from the early 90s, then again as done by Beck for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Just now discovering the original. Holy shit...This is good.
If my heart could have changed back then. This song marked a change in my life - let my love go. You go Korgis. Put the words right there. So long Jacqui - you was the one. But we were too young.

God rest and God speed to your husband. May he and you find rest and peacefulness.
So beautiful. Simple ,profound. I was 19 in 1980; I'm 61 now. This song holds truth within it.
likewise.
I agree 💯👍 ❤️🖤🤍💚🤎💛💜💙
I could not have put that better myself. I am also 61.
Have a lovely 61st year :)

Know exactly that connection. Reminds me of being at Butlins in Minehead when in 1980 when i was 10. Haunting and evocative.
Pretty memory. Love when a song can hit at just the right moment like that and then last forever there, Locked in time.
We don't remember anything before we were born. We won't remember anything after we die. Maybe life is just remembering, and all we have in the end are memories. Bless you
Simple is always genius in a beautiful song
65 years old and still listening and love so much this song. Who else listening in 2022 !!!

I don't know how I missed this 80s song. I only first stumbled across it listening to Beck's version. I assumed he was the original artist.
This tune is absolutely sensational ❤
You are so right
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

Very haunting sounding chord progression but also very mesmerizing.
Reminds me of the long Summers as a teenager and how you felt immortal. Listening now is almost like a lament.
This song is so underrated!
VERY underrated !!!
Masterpieces don't need to be rated !
Unbelievably haunting violin solo. Perfection.
I don't quite think, that for this is played neither a violin nor a saxophone. But any way it's a sweet solo.
Does any one know/remember in which film it occurs? O.k. I know it might have been used in quite some films since the '80s, because of it's true and universal message,
Music was great in the 80
And forever!
It was the era of love and melancholically.
Like no other.
Such a powerful decade, full of profound and passionate discovery.... In so many ways.

Very Lennon. Something on a deeper existential level.
I first heard it over 40 years ago and I never get tired of it. The melody is so simple and great.
What year was this?
@hopppy54 1980. Sounds very 70’s Alessi Brothers.
Saudades…. Tempo bom…. Música fantástica dos meus bailinhos! ❤
Such words of wisdom, and a beautiful melody.
RIP Stuart Gordon - a wonderful violinist and a lovely man.
hey, what is this violin? 8 pegs, but only 4 strings?
They used a Guzheng instrument in the studio.
I m born in 1996 and this song is a amazing felling ....

Makes me very nostalgic for my youth .
Remember this. Beautiful piece.
It’s great song, i like.
I love this stunningly beautiful song……
It may not be the most challenging lyrically, but, amazing music, and great vocals. Never bettered. The Korgis original is by far a country mile ahead of all the cover versions.
Totally agree with you
masterpiece no words
What a complete song. Melody, mood. lyrics a bit mysterious but that's OK - songs don't have to explain themselves.
It's a song about finding the true value of a person once you look past the superficial.
Such a beautiful beautiful song. It speaks to the heart.
One of my all time favourite songs.
Growing up with this song in the house... A blessed upbringing.
So lovely so simple so beautiful

That violin solo made this song Unforgettable
