    Get some old worn out semi mud flaps, cut off bad parts and then piece them together good pieces for a "floor" for the storage area. Help prevent scratching and rattle of anything metal places in that area when driving :)

    Put a cork in the end of your hose, for some reason bugs and spiders like to make a home in them then they go in your tank.

    Put a 1/4 turn valve where the hose attaches to the nozzle so you can turn it off when done pumping.

    Andrew, I know what you are talking about on the algae in diesel. It got so bad on my 4520 that it stopped up my suction line on the tank.
    I had to remove the tank to flush it out. I replaced the sending unit while I had it off. I treated my tractor fuel tank with BioClean and now keep BioCide in my fuel drum. I buy the chemicals at autozone. I wish I could attach a picture of the algae slim I pulled out of the tank. I’ll email it to you.
    I have a 55 gallon drum at my shop that I keep diesel in. When I empty it, I put it in the truck and run by to get off road in it. I just emptied the drum but think I might just buy a tank full at a time as prices are dropping.
    I enjoyed your video on the tank cleaning and restoration.
    BTW, I used to make my own diesel about 15 years ago. That was before anyone knew what biodiesel was. It was costing me about 65 cents a gallon but the used cooking oil was free. I still have the reactor tank I built then but haven’t made any in a decade. It may be time to start it up again.

    Great job restoring that tank. I refurbished a old ford tractor tank about 20 years ago, and found a product that actually lines the inside. The old tractor tank had several rust holes. At that time, there was not alot of quality replacement tanks to choose from so I went the liner route. Have not had one bit of problems since, and had actually forgotten about it. Just a FYI, if you ever notice rust creeping back in that tank. Cannot think of the name of the product, seems like I bought from a atv repair site. This stuff goes in like paint. There are some calculations to be determined for how Much goes in. Once in rotate the tank so that it lines the inside, set up the fan system, and it cures like plastic. On another note, I have a 50 gallon square tank, I use for diesel with a fill rite rotary pump. After a while, pressure that builds up in the tank starting pushing fuel through the pump. I have the same pressure relief cap that you have as well. All that being said, I installed a ball valve after the filter to shut off the flow. I actually lost about 5 gallons of fuel before I realized what was going on. Just my two cents worth. Well maybe a nickels worth with the current inflation. Lol. Keep up the good projects, I really enjoy your videos. Good, clean, interesting and educational entertainment.

    Great video sir. I have a similar tank I’m trying to reuse and I’m going to follow your steps. I really liked your idea with the wire mesh to create additional storage. A piece of rubber matting would be a good idea to install in between the bed and the back of the tank to eliminate from rubbering the paint off and creating rust again.

    Nice tank, so much better than the 5 gallon cans. Nice job saving the flammable sticker, too bad it should come off as you are not hauling anything flammable, diesel is a combustible. When I set up my bulk tank I ordered some stickers (from Amazon of course) with "DYED OFF-ROAD DIESEL". Even though I have a gas truck I wanted the tank clearly labeled. I purchased the crank version of that same pump, it had a place on the side to 'hang up' the hose when not using it.

    I was gonna comment on leaving the Hose lying in the Cage and see the Fuel come running out as a Syphon. Cause the Nozzle is below the level of the fuel in the Tank.

    Andrew, search your area for a fuel depot company. Its those types of small fuel companies that deliver fuel around the city in the pump trucks. You should be able to get offroad diesel directly from them cheaper than those stations like you went to. Here we save around .70 cents sometimes more for off-road and if you catch it when diesel is cheap i would explore getting a larger tank double wall. We got one from Ebay a few years ago i think its 900 gallons for $700 delivered. We then got it filled and keep topping it off with fresh off-road every 100 gallons we use. Its inside a small 12x20 metal building away from everything just incase it goes boom

    Good evening Andrew, hope that the 2 of you are doing well. With the wire you installed on the tank, you can easily use bungee cords to help keep things in place. Most of the fuel pumps like you installed usually comes with a built in nozzle holder. I couldn't see very well but I think that you might have one but I couldn't tell. On your pump on the back side facing the back of your truck there is a hole and if the nozzle fits into it the hole the nozzle should catch and stay in place. They built them this way so you won't have to put the nozzle into a bucket like you did and have any left over gas come out and have the nozzle lying in it. Most have a built in holder for a nozzle. If by chance yours does not, you may want to check to see the they make one that you can attach so your nozzle isn't lying in diesel. Glad that the chick's are doing well and that you are now a new chick father/ tiffany a new chick mother. Take care, God bless

    • @edbodell6912
      @edbodell6912 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I stand corrected, I didn't realize when watching the video that you bought a drum pump so it won't have anywhere to put the nozzle as you know. Put some type of hook with a locking device so you don't have to keep it in a bucket.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There actually is a odd hole in the pump, I'm going to see if by chance it holds the nozzle.

    Another awesome project completed. Wonder if you could reverse the handle and have it pointed downward so it would be easier to pump when standing on the ground. In any case, that’s a wonderful addition your operation around the farm.
    I used to work at a hospital and we had 7 emergency generators that ran on diesel and we had to have our fuel ‘polished’ every 6 months to keep the algae from becoming an issue. We were required to do a 30 minute monthly full load test on all 7 each month and had to be able to run a minimum of 68 hours continuously without refueling in an emergency situation such as a natural disaster. A company came in with a huge truck and would suck up the fuel from the tanks and ran it through a series of filters before placing it back into the holding tanks. Was an interesting process. When dealing with mission critical back up systems, the fuel had to be perfect.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely understand the need for a perfect operating system in a place like that.

    • @brianhillis3701
      @brianhillis3701 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The use of biodiesel is the reason you had to do that. Even though you don't buy biodiesel other people have and the trucks and pipelines are contaminated with it. Algae was very rare prior to biodiesel and now it is very common. I worked at a hospital and tanks that had not been refilled for years were fine. Biodiesel comes out and we had to install fuel polishing systems. Got either globs of snot or coffee grounds (rust).

    • @Tripring2000
      @Tripring2000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brianhillis3701 it was a requirement in order to maintain our accreditation as well as a state requirement due to our designation of a level 2 trauma center. Our storage tanks were in ground tanks so we were more concerned with water than algae. You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced a critical grid power failure and then experience a critical generator failure in the middle of it. Doctors don’t take kindly to loosing all electricity during surgeries. Even though all equipment has battery back ups, it’s a very unique situation to be in.

    • @brianhillis3701
      @brianhillis3701 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Tripring2000 I managed over a hundred tanks and generators at a very large medical center with multiple BSL3s and a nuclear reactor. I know exactly what you are talking about. Both above ground and below ground tanks nowadays have algae in them mostly confined to the water oil interface. Polishing systems are needed on most of them and occasional cleaning. Algacides can work if the tank has been cleaned recently. Keeping water out is a key. Try putting socks in to remove the water or pump it out with something that goes to the bottom of the tank the fill tube is too high to be effective. Usually a 55 gallon drum is big enough. Fill it, let it set a couple of days and drain the water out until you see oil. Pour the remaining oil into the tank it came from. Don't contaminate other tanks. You should do this whenever you get over a quarter inch of water in the tank.

    OMG, this is where I shine ! A lot can go wrong with your fuel tank, but they are easy fixes, for one” I wouldn’t leave the fuel nozzle below the fuel level in the tank,,, liquid flows downhill, I would hate to see you lose $300 worth of fuel (siphon effect) can take place in any situation, and you will always fight with moisture because it will get in and fuel is lighter than water, so water will sink to the bottom so do some science, thank goodness for filters 😁

    Welding the wire. Flat bar ok at top but why weld wire bottom to dank? I would approach it from angle iron top and bottom so wire wolds to frame of angle iron. Horizontal supports at bends out of angle iron too. I just think wire weld to bottom going to give way vs welded to the angle iron makes more contact with the wire

    Andrew did you ever consider welding some fork pockets on the bottom of the tank. You wouldn’t need the 4x4 underneath the tank and you would not have the risk of the tank sliding off the forks of your tractor when the tank is full.

    Could you put a lockable pump nozzle (with auto cutoff) on the end that would cut the fuel at the end of the hose? You could lock it open, fill up and it would cut itself off. You’d have some fuel still in the hose though.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could, but someone mentioned a 1/4 turn valve right before the spout, I think that's the perfect solution.

    Is that bucket going to catch rain water? Think the nozzle should be facing down so no water enters the hose. Maybe hook it to the tank into a short pipe to cover the nozzle.

    • @TKCL

      Won't be a problem, that truck is always under a barn. If driving in the rain I can dump the bucket or hose. The hose end will never be higher than the pump.

    Vinegar helps, If you really want to get rid of all the rust I believe it’s muriatic acid that eats the rust. A lot of people restoring vintage parts with rust will use that because it does need the metal just the rust.
    One thing I would do first is put a bunch of gravel in there and strap it down to those forks and go bounce around for a while and scrub and chip off some of the rust and flakes, then dump that out and muriatic acid is what gets rid of rust. Then you seal the tank. Motorcycle guys do it all the time, it’s easier in a little tank but the rust isn’t really horrible as long as you get all the flakes out of it. Muriatic acid will get rid of the rust but not the big flakes and the gummy junk in there.
    In a car or motorcycle once you get the tank physically cleaned you can use the vinegar or the muriatic acid and once it’s clean you let it dry out completely and then you pour a liquid in there that basically treats the metal or lines it and it sort of seals the metal off and that liner is made for gas tanks.
    Diesel is pretty forgiving. If you watch diesel Creek some of the tanks he has are horrible and he just throws gravel in there and breaks the chips out and lets the filter handle the rest of it. Once the diesel is in there even on bare metal it won’t be too bad.
    Another cool option are those propane tanks you make the fire pits out of. You could weld some legs and fittings on that make a pretty cool tank. You could throw this on the trailer and fill it up and make a couple of runs or just every now and again when you go to the gas station is have several hundred gallons stored up. Diesel last a long time, much longer than gasoline. There are also some additives you can put in there that will absorb the water
    I like the mesh he put around there, that was a pretty cool idea. I would weld a couple of little tiedowns on there. For luggage racks at Harbor freight and almost anywhere that sells automotive accessories you can buy little mesh nets that are kind of like bungee cords but they have one that’s made for those little receiver hitch carriers that is about the same size and if you just welded a few little tabs with holes on there it would keep stuff from bouncing out of that tool basket area when you’re driving and keep stuff from blowing around but it’s almost exactly that size it’s just a net made out of bungee cord with little hooks on it but that might be cool on there as well

    • @ShaneZettelmier
      @ShaneZettelmier 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TKCL you need both, you get a huge propane tank and use this one because the 700 gallon tanks too heavy for your truck to haul all that gas at once. 😂
      That’s where my mind goes anyway, use that to fill up at the gas station and then pump it into the big tank so you’re not driving around with all that weight. Either way this one works and it’s pretty awesome.

  • @ShaneZettelmier

    The problem with storing fuel, especially diesel is that you have to let the tanks breathe and that usually introduces water into the system. I’m almost wondering if you could build a box around the breather part and just fill it with a bunch of that silica gel and I wonder how long that would last and if that would dry the system out. I think it was you who is using a filter that was supposed to dry the air for compressors that was sort of like that it was filled with silica. I wonder if you just put something like that in line to the breather on the tank if that would be enough to keep humidity out of the tank. 🤔

      Phosphoric acid for steel, turns rust black & seals it from any more rusting. In aviation , jet, the fuel has a microbial growth in the moisture in the fuel, they make a chemical called prist that will knock it out. Jet fuel is really clean kerosene.
