There's no doubt that the bassline of Angel Island Act 2 it's probably the most aggressive and complex bassline of the entire game, always changing and increasing the chaotic feeling of the song. Awesome review, Alex!

    @Arcad3n 3 ปีที่แล้ว +141

The Sonic 3 beta that was leaked featured an early version of the act 2 theme that is significantly slower, unpolished, and most importantly, features that chilling second melody much more prominently. I had never been able to hear it before, but thanks to that beta I am in love with this song. Thanks so much for bringing attention to it in this video.

It's beautiful how a story can be told through music without words. I'm not an expert on music theory but just listening to Act 1's music compared to Act 2's, I had a feeling that some minor notes were put in it that made it sound sadder.
That Endless Mine motif was an interesting find. I listened to both Angel Island Act's music many times and never noticed it.

What's interesting about the act transitions is that initially, Angel Island's Act 2 did start playing after the firebombing cutscene, and this was something they changed for the final game. Of course, it may have been an unintentional side effect as the code that they modified is universal.
Also I wanted to say I really appreciate the work you've done on this series and every that video has been enjoyable!

Really enjoy what you’ve done here. Made me realise why I loved the music in sonic as much as I did/do. There was some very clever production work put in to all music in the sonic games and it especially shows on this soundtrack. It’s hard to come to terms with the idea that 1 person composed it… various layered instruments, a bassline, and layered rhythm sections - it’s nothing short of musical genius in my opinion…

The OST for Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles is easily in my top 5 soundtracks.

That motif is in Sonic 3D blast....the Genesis version. Its on the tip of my tongue I can hear the song in my head! I'm gonna have to go listen to the ost to find it. These videos have been incredible, thank you!

I love your Sonic 3 music analysis videos! 27 years after I first played it Sonic 3 is still my favorite game of all time.
I have a random suggestion that you can ignore if you want: If you feel like going off the beaten path you could analyze a song from Ecco the Dolphin: Tides of Time. As much as I love the Sonic 3 soundtrack, Tides of Time is my favorite genesis soundtrack and arguably my favorite video game soundtrack period. It fits the game perfectly; it manages to be both inviting and creepy at the same time; vast and oceanic while also tense and claustrophobic. It manages to convey such opposite themes perfectly while retaining both a sense of adventure and a sense of beauty. It's worth looking into!

"There's a separate melody occurring simultaneously, one of the song's many unsung heroes."
    Was that double meaning intentional?

11:23 There we can also recognize this motive from Mystic Caves 2-player music from Sonic 2 and in Death Egg from same Sonic 3

I've never been good at understanding music, or at least, putting what I know into words, so this video helps a lot actually!

For the people transcribing the melody from the [9:54-10;02], there is a tiny error.
The 2nd note in the 3rd measure of the showed chunk was transcribed as a C, but it's actually a #(sharp)A/b(flat)7.
(Set the speed to 0.5X if you wanna listen to the note)

I think it was the abrupt transition and the fact that Sonic Music was playing as it transitioned

something i visulised is that in act 2 once you get to the epic part with the tremolo, you are probably near water. so when the notes go down it feels like the fire is dying down, but soon later the fire is back and thats when it rises to finish the piece.

The composer of Act 1 and 2 is probably M. Nagao. He talked in an interview some years ago how he was responsible for more than half of the songs on the OST and that's the explanation. If you compare 'Angel Island 1', 'Angel Island 2, 'Hidrocity 2', 'Launch Base 2', 'Competition (prototype)', 'Chrome Gadget' they all sound very similar. My guess is he's the guy responsible for those.

The second melody is the prototype themes mane music that you wold hear but the prototype theme was slower and it was played with a kind of woodwind instermint

So is it Calyso/ Soca, or Ska style, I know it’s a form of Latin music from that Caribbean area, but I’m not sure what specific style it is, I’m thinking about writing a song in this style, with Intro/ Verse/ Pre-Chorus/ Bridge/ Solo section ( for guitar), back into Verse, and then Outro.

So hey this thought just popped into my head, a potential reason for the issue at around 8:16. Perhaps the game going back to the cheerful tone despite the horror that just occurred is a way to show that Sonic is currently in that shocked state where the reality of what just happened hasn’t sunk in yet. Like that scene in the beginning of Saving Private Ryan where Tom Hanks is standing around dazed and def to the world around him for a few moments.
