I just finished reading KM Weiland's Structuring Your Novel. Jack Bickham's Scene and Structure came in the mail earlier this week. The fog is clearing and I am starting to develop a vision about how to craft a novels, based upon a repeatable process. Because of you and your video series, I am able to wade through the information without feeling inundated and lost. I do feel a bit overwhelmed as I feel like I've just passed through plot point 1 of learning how to write novels. BUT, it feels great! You are SHOWING us, instead of just telling us. I can't thank you enough for your generosity and your information.
Hi Sarra, honestly, this series has been truly great. I especially love this episode. You don't find many people exploring this stage of the plotting/writing process (post 3-ACT plotting) and you've been so articulate, thoughtful and clear with the way that you describe everything. Your teaching skills really shine through. You think this was long? I would have kept watching it a lot longer! lol. I will for sure watch it 1-2 more times to really absorb all these ideas as I work on my WIP. Your whole series will be really helpful as I plot my new nanowrimo project from scratch. Again, thank you, and keep up the excellent work!
I love the idea of writing down the scenes for specific beats and then returning later to fill in the gaps. For me, it's like setting smaller goals, more attainable goals. It can be overwhelming to think about how to get your character(s) from A to Z, but with this new method, I'm focusing on just getting my character from A to D. Not so intimidating or seemingly impossible. Already completed this process in a Word document that I separated into 4 columns. Each column has a rough outline of the scenes that will be in each act. For me, it's easier on the computer because I can delete, add, move scenes around easier, but I really do love the old fashioned pen and paper route. Excited to use this process more and more! Thank you Sarra for helping this newbie writer find a process that works for her!
It feels so good to make progress through this series finally. And it's been so incredibly helpful. It usually takes me twice or three times as long to get through these videos because I'm taking notes and just re-listening to parts over and over again, seeing how they already apply to what I have for my own story. It's astounding how immediately helpful all of these concepts and tips and guiding ideas are, and I'm just so grateful you put this together for so many people. I wanted to write my entire life, and I've tried, but I never felt like I could get the story quite right. Sitting through this series has helped me to refine my story, my characters' motivations and needs, helped me to tighten all of my plot points and even create brand new ones! I just wanted to write, and to live off of it was a dream. But with this guidance, I feel like I have a plan for a series now, and not just throwing my story out there into the wind. And I just can't wait to see how it goes. Looking forward to the last video in this series, and then for all your other videos to come too.
I already was a big time plotter, but this series, as well as your worksheets have helped me with the middle of my books. Thank you for this! I look forward to the last video. :)
Girl! I have that scene and structure book by Jack M. Bickham as well! I also have communicated with K.M. Weiland in the past. Love her books and workbooks!
Another great video with so much goodness, Sarra! I'm going to have to watch each video all over again once we reach the end :) And I would LOVE to see some videos from you about how you plot a series! That's been the hardest thing for me in finishing my first book because I know I want it to be a series but I'm having a hard time nailing down what happens in the future books so I can set everything up well. Thanks so much for putting so much effort and time into the videos you do for us
Thank you Sarra! I feel so grateful to have found your plotting playlist - what a blessing!! I so appreciate that you are willing to share your experiences and provide examples from your own books! I'm just starting to write my first novel and I feel so much more confident about the process. I've purchased Super Structure and Creating Character Arcs because of your recommendations, I hope I'm able to absorb as much from them as I have from you :-)
This has been a fantastic series of plotting videos!! I can't thank you enough for taking the time to make these and share them with us! I'm still not much of a plotter/outliner because it's hard for me to wrap my mind around the story beats, haha, but I do plan out my stories in a logical manner from start to finish. But I've really appreciated watching this series because it's helped gain a better understanding of some in-depth outlining that I'd like to maybe give a try for my future books and see if it works for me. I'd love to see a video about plotting for a series because that's primarily what I write and it can be a struggle to wrangle all the storylines, especially when I have multiple pov narrators lol. I have a large contemporary fantasy universe with many interlinking series, so it's been wild trying to write out the story plan for the main characters and figure out where they tie in to other stories in other series', but also how to pace my plots and character development across many books. It's a lot. 😂 But I really look up to you and how you have managed to accomplish so much and write so much!! Truly inspiring! Thank you for sharing, and as always I'm looking forward to future videos! :D
Love you and your plot videos Sarra! You've been very informative and your videos have been a great guideline with my editing process. Praying for your success and happiness.
Yes this is a really great section. Bringing it all together with an example really helps. Love the whole series. Consider writing a nonfiction book on this as a workbook. Would love to meet you some day! Now I'll look for a how to title your book, in your vids.
This is the video I was waiting for! Thankyou for sharing the process with us. This series has been so informative and motivational! P.S. I started Shadow Demons Saga 2 days before and I'm already on third book! Love your writing and the story you have created. And my most fav part are the amazing plot twists nearing the end of the book! Would love to see videos from you on plotting long series!! Thankyou again for your effort in making these videos and sharing your knowledge with us :)
Can you please do a video on plotting a series it would be extremely helpful. Also how do you determine what needs to happen from multiple view point characters? Or characters in general how do you mesh scenes so that each character gets what they need inorder to move forward in their Arc and story.
This series has been immensely helpful, thank you! Did you do the plotting for a series video? If not, could you do it please? I would love to watch that!! Thanks for all your help.
Hi Sarra! Thank you for this series! I was very helpful and informative. I kind of followed along to fill each sheet! The workbook is also great. Could you make a video on how you use this method to plot for multiple POVs? Pauline
It's such a great book! I think he gets a little rigid on some of it, but taking it as a great starting point, it was really one of those first books to open my eyes to just how a scene is structured! Thanks for watching, Marissa! I've been enjoying your videos too!
Hi I was just wondering if you do a chapter each scene and the reaction or two different chapter for the action the the reaction or does each scene stretch over a few chapters then a few chapters for a reaction or what if that makes sense or is it personal preference??
I’m so excited to start my first book. I can’t believe I’m even considering writing a story I’ve had in my brain for decades. As far as questions, how many words per chapter? How many chapters per book? I guess I have far more questions than answers lol
There are no real rules or standards about how many words per chapter or how many chapters in a book. I have a friend who writes ten chapters every book. My latest book has 50 chapters. It's really just whatever feels right to you.
The part where you mention that it comes from your imagination - closing your eyes and playing out the scenes - reminds me of a recent post from KM Weiland on Dream-zoning: www.helpingwritersbecomeauthors.com/what-is-dreamzoning-7-steps-to-finding-new-story-ideas/

Only one video to go! Comment if you've enjoyed this series, and let me know if you have any questions!
Yes, please do a video on planning the series. I think I've got it straight in my head, but I'd love to learn how you did/do it. 💚💙💜

This series is so, so helpful! Also, I had to read Scene and Structure in school. It basically saved my bacon.

Do you start writing the novel even before you finish makong the index card upto ACT III, for the whole novel?
It depends but usually I'll go ahead and start if I have act 1 ready to go!
@@HeartBreathings Thank you... And all your videos are inspirational! I am writing a book following this series.
