Based on what evidence is it a memorial to RECONCILIATION?
The dedication carved into it says:
      TO OUR DEAD HEROES
      BY
      THE UNITED DAUGHTERS
      OF THE CONFEDERACY

    • @trapdoorspringfieldmodel1888

The memorial says "TO OUR DEAD HEROES BY THE UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFEDERACY
VICTRIX CAUSA DIIS PLACUIT SED VICTA CATONI." The Latin translates to The Victorious Cause was Pleasing to the Gods, But the Lost Cause Pleased Cato. Thus, the memorial is clearly honoring the Confederate dead as heroes and is pushing the Lost Cause narrative of the Confederacy, and is certainly not celebrating reconciliation nor reunification.

@@JeanetteFaith Perhaps you should actually read some history on the subject. The land did belong to Lee, but the United States seized it during the war and General Meigs decided to use it as a grave site for American war dead. This was done so that Lee would never be able to reside there again. So Arlington National Cemetery wasn't started by Lee as a "grave site for VA Confederate Soldiers," but instead by the United State to honor American Soldiers.
And just because something was long ago doesn't mean that monuments to traitors should stay. In fact, if you truly want our history to remain intact then this monument which not only honors traitors, but promotes the false narrative of the Lost Cause of the Confederacy, desecrated the policy that Meigs had when he ran Arlington for decades after the Civil War of not permitting Confederate monuments there, and was opposed by the Grand Army of the Republic (an American Civil War veteran association) to it, should be torn down.
We do not need to honor traitors to keep our history intact. If this is so necessary then let us rename West Point and put a statue in Lafayette Square to the great hero of the Battle of Saratoga. Not changing history, a monument is not history. They should not be honored.

The one of General Lee in Richmond was given to the Slave Museum and melted down, immediately before the Court cases to save it for the Confederacy Museum could be brought to a point where an injunction could be issued, the statue was the joint property of several families in Richmond not the State as a prevention of destruction measure.
Democrat GOVERNOR Siezed it and turned it over to the Slave Museum.
Many statues across the East have had similar fates..

@@ablewindsor1459 That is where you are wrong when you say "depends on your viewpoint." Did MLK and Obama try to overthrow the government of the United States? The answer is no, but the people this monument honors did just that.

I find it offensive that they would take down a monument to honor the Confederate dead but I find a lot of things under this administration offensive.

Why should Confederate dead be given a monument when they are traitors to this nation that put hundreds of thousands of American soldiers and sailors in an early grave.

@@dif1212 I find you offensive. That land belonged to a Southern general that was confiscated by the politicians in DC.
They have every right to be there.
As for the politicians who started this war, they were failures.
