This has to be one of the most incredible shark attack stories ever...the heroism that Bret Gilliam showed in his attempt to save Rodney Temple was amazing, and then fighting off the sharks and getting dragged into the depths, probably close to 400 feet, and then the sheer will to survive as he made an emergency ascent on NO AIR is nothing short of miraculous. He's gotta be the luckiest man alive. It's sad that his attempt to save Rod was futile, two big oceanic whitetip sharks like that at such a depth...he's lucky he wasn't eaten too. Amazing story!
Oh my gosh! I just googled this man’s name because of another TH-cam channel, Sharks Happen, this story was told. I had just commented how insanely brave Brett was to try to help his friend. Anxious to see if his story matched the one I just heard. Edit: I come back and listen to this every 4-6 months or so. It’s one of the most incredibly heroic stories I’ve ever heard.
Those white tips are VERY opportunistic. The "open ocean" breeds just won't quit until they get their fill. Bret's story is one of those shark stories I've not forgotten since I heard it. And I've heard every iteration of this one I could find. This is actually the second time watching this interview. It's actually a really well done interview. You let him talk and didn't keep butting in like so many ego driven podcasters do.
Your sentiments match mine to a T concerning this heroic story. I first learned of it 2-3 years ago and come back and listen every 6 months or so. I could only hope if I were ever in a horrid situation as this, someone as brave as Bret would be nearby!

What a horrifying story! Poor Rod. I’m sorry Bret had to go through that. It’s incredible he survived. No fault to the sharks of course but it’s tragic anyway.
RiP , I can’t for the life of me understand why we arm ourselves on land but not in water as if we’re safe ? None the less I can’t imagine the nightmares sir , I’m sorry for what you have to live with inside now .
I cant help but wonder if a bit of this is embellished. I know the Rod Temple story well, but these details are a first. He walked into his own memorial? They had a memorial together in 2 days? Wouldnt they at least take a day or 2 to look for remains first??
Agreed, and not just a bit. No witnesses either. No mention of dropping weights, firing CO2 carts, etc, just swam from "325" on air. I've been at 190fsw in the chamber on air and was buzzing/laughing my ass off. 325 and making decisions??
Was Rob alive after the first bite, all the talk is about this diver but what about poor Rob?was he still alive as the sharks dragged him down the last time?
In another interview I read he says that before Rod was ripped away from him he had gone fully limp. I imagine he bled out fast. His arm was taken off before he was ripped away from Bret from what I remember from the more in depth interview I read. Actually I've read a couple of this. It's a particularly dreadful story. Just the grabbing of Rod now knowing the sharks already have him and feeling his body shake from them tearing him up is so freaking freaky I can't even think of a good enough word for how freaky that is.
@@jdgoesham5381 hi Jd, it has got to be one of the most terrifying situations we can imagine, it makes me think about things like in the animal kingdom it's normal everyday life and death, almost every living creature ends up dying this way, we humans have removed ourselves so far from the natural order that we forget how natural death is. or perhaps I'm just overthinking things.
Holy shyt dude 😳. Imagine the nightmares this man has. My goodness. I sincerely he doesn't have survivors gulit. There was nothing he could've done to save his friend. 2 hungry sharks with the taste of blood? No way. RIP to Mr. Temple. The world knows your story and will never forget you.🙏🏽💖

Amazing story. I'm glad he made it, but I feel awful for the family of the man who didn't.
14ft white tip is enormous for that species

Jacques Cousteau once said they are the most dangerous shark in the ocean.

Also, I’ve read Bret’s story online he pushed and it’s even more detailed. Just amazing he survived.
Jazzhands, is that you?

Wow , what an incredible story. Brett is a stand-up guy to help his buddy who was getting attacked.
Helluva story. Especially about landing on the freeway and being met by the chopper that had O2. Nothing else would’ve saved him.

Thanks for the comment Jack, glad you enjoyed it. Its a heck of a story!

Rest In Peace to Rod, and mad respect to Bret.
And now, RIP to Bret.
@ Ah man did he pass away?
@@autisticus1678
Yes, he did. October 8 of last year. Complications from a stroke.
@ damn that’s too bad. Rest in peace.
Very cool stuff!!! We still see almost that big and they suck, always be cautious with white tips!!! Aggressive as hell!!!
One shark is bad enough but two attacking it’s gotta b ur worst nightmare
It's like being attacked by two large pitbulls only in the ocean
amazing story!!!! thank you!!
incredible

Not a Fun Fact: This is the deepest shark attack on record
Sure is.
I hope Bret was feeling gratitude to Rodney as he departed for the surface.
The stuff of Legends !

Very embellished, probably about 10% actual events, if any of it is. I haven't heard the other divers version.
You literally have no clue. Grow up

This is a really interesting story!! It's kinda like Scary Interesting channel on YT.

Yes indeed
Great story, but he talks almost nothing about the diver who actually died and more about himself
