That "guard tower" as you called it (22:36 ish) is actually the home of those raiders who were shooting at you. If you go up to the upper "room" of that building and interact with anything up there it triggers them spawning, which is what happened to you. They also re-spawn after a period of time (not sure exactly how long). So you have to get rid of them on a regular basis. Not such an issue with the vanilla build area as it won't let you build out that far normally.

The magazine is actually +1 meat not double meat...some animals or bugs don't always give meat like the mirlurk hatchlings and bloddbugs..once you pick up the mag you will get at least 1 meat from every animal and bug...and for most others will be 2
