Great video. I'm a baseball junkie with a baseball TH-cam channel, and I only recently discovered Oscar Charleston. That is a testament to how much the great Negro League players have been forgotten over the years.
Thank you very much for this, very well done, and well presented. Total injustice that Charleston and so many others were excluded. What a different story we'd have about major league baseball if not for the owners' discriminatory "gentlemens' agreement".
This is the reason why I never count players before Jackie in the great categories. Imagine how many more players are forgotten great, content! You have gained a follower.
There just something inexplicably satisfying and wonderful about baseball mythology AND reality that makes it a captivating aspect of our daily lives. 😃
I Read a 17 year old ted williams saw Oscar Charleston hit. and ted said Oscar was the great hitter he ever saw YET! William erected a museum with the 20 best hitters of all time some of which he never ever saw. But never inducted charleston. The Negro Leagues was a major league they just werent recognized. Until now.
back in the 90's. I was watching the Cubs on WGN. Harry Carry said something profound to me, while he was calling the Cubs game. out of know where, Harry said...SOME OF THE GREATEST STORIES/AKA/history. MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT. I NEVER forgot Harry saying that.
Subscribed. One thing that should be added, the Negro Leagues would play official league games fairly sporadically, then teams would make the rest of their money playing exhibitions between league games. So they only played around half (if that) the official games that white MLB teams played. So when you quote 143 home runs, you really probably should at least double it to give a more accurate picture of what Charleston did. Case in point: Josh Gibson is estimated by many to have hit over 800 home runs in his career, but officially, he only hit 166 in league play. But his average per 162 games was 45. (Charleston's was 25).
I know for a fact that the Negro leagues had dozens of players just as great as the ones we think of as the Greatest. It’s not like black players only got good after Jackie Robinson started playing in the majors. Look up Buck Leonard, Pop Lloyd, Willie Wells. On and on. You’ve got a new subscriber
I've always wondered how many White fans went to Negro League games, just to see good baseball. I certainly would have been in that group! To see fun players like Satch, Cool Papa, Josh Gibson, wow, how could you NOT want to see players like them?

So Babe Ruth you don't count. Cause then how can you say Satchel Piage or Josh Gibson be the greatest either.

Absolutely, baseball has a unique way of intertwining myth and reality that captures our imagination!
Great video. Just subscribed!
Thanks for the sub!
Very interesting content that is missing from the internet. Keep it up!
The triple crown is recognized as being batting average, home runs and RBI’s, not stolen bases.
8:45 pm EST,time. outstanding history lesson, nicely expressed! I have his baseball card, from the Ted Williams collection. DW
Well Done 👏👏

the so-called Negro Leagues were the Major Leagues. for African American players.
I read that the Negro Leagues beat the white major league players two thirds of the time based on newspaper records.
Thanks for sharing! I hope you enjoy the channel!

Chump change was worth more back then.
