Great compilation. Dens initial return in 2003 up until Christmas was gold. Unfortunately after framing Phil, in 2004 there wasn’t much for Den to do in the square apart from trying to separate Sharon and Dennis which I found an incredibly tedious and dragged out storyline. Instead of Den returning as a regular again in 04, I think he should have been in and out whenever there was a major storyline with Sharon/Dennis. The writers should have had him accepting how much Walford has changed over the years and the fact he couldn’t see Sharon and Dennis together and return to his life in Spain. But informing Sharon if she ever needs him he’ll be back. Den could have been the shows lucky charm. Having him return every now and then when things get too tough for Sharon and Vicky. This could have led to great stories of Den finally confronting Peggy and Grant. Yep, you’ve guessed it, Den Watts fan here.
Had it moments but a lot of the writing was heavy handed, shoehorning him in to Bobbys paternity and The "Get Den Watts" Fairground Disaster felt forced...and then things got worse. After the public falling out, writers went out of their way to bury Den to punish Grantham. He was often publically outsmarted by Andy, shown to be jealous of his young and handsome son and became a bitter and twisted man
And when i returned for my last months in Walford, i totally destroyed Andy. I mean, hes a supposed to be the new face of Walford, yet it took him couple of months (January 2004 - December 2004) which is 11 months i guess, to con Sam out of everything, yet i planned to con Sam and it didn't even take a month & i succeeded. What happened after Chrissie supposedly killed me and put my body under concrete. She got my body out of it and transmitted me to a hospital and i got better and then it took a couple of weeks for me to get my belongings and business and all off that and i went back to Spain. I don't intend to come back to Walford ever again im happy where i am. I let Chrissie take my share off the Vic, so i run my own pub.
I couldn't agree more. I got bored of Eastenders around 2004. Den Watts first 2.5 months comeback in late 2003 and his last 2.5 months exit story from late Nov 2004 to mid Feb 2005 were good, excellent. However his March -Aug 2004 run apart from a few episodes (first couple of episodes back in March -April 2004) were a bit lame and disappointing. Lackluster. I always thought Leslie Grantham was a good and rather underrated actor in whatever he was in (while not as high profile, he was never out of work between his 1989-2003 departure from Eastenders) I think the novelty of his character had worn off by here. It was disinteresting. I think it'd have been better of he'd been a semi recurring character who came back for a month or 2 every 5-10 years like Grant Mitchell or David Wicks. I'd rather had seen Leslie be given a different role in another tv drama. Had he still been alive with all this streaming now, I reckon he probably would have got some good or noticeable support roles in dramas, although not as high profile as Den Watts. At least he made a good 6 figure salary from his last Eastenders run. Might have seen it as a pension. His last couple of months in the role and exit were great. I was also bored of Eastenders by 2004. It started losing its way in 2002 but was still watchable. I stopped watching for 6 months in 2004 until Xmas time. 2005 was an improvement but still not as good. Stopped watching by Spring 2006 and haven't watched it since (I hear it was good in the mid to late noughties).
I can see your point. Leslie Grantham (who was an underrated actor) did say he was never out of work from 1989-2003 when he left Eastenders but admittedly was never on anything as high profile. Considering his character was killed off in 2005, if Grantham hadn't died in 2016 with a lot of the streaming services and increases in TV dramas, I reckon he'd have popped up in several support roles (albeit not as high profile as Eastenders).
@awainwright534 I'll be honest, as much as I liked Den Watts, my favourite time period in Eastenders is 1992-2001 when Den wasn't there. Especially the late 90s.
The First Episode of EastEnders I ever saw was the 20th Anniversary episode back in 2005, when Johnny Allen pushed Andy Hunter off the Bridge and Den was killed for a second time by Chrissie Watts. I remember finding Den to be quite scary as a kid, I am currently going back and watching the old episodes from the start back in 1985, such a great character definitely better than Phil for me, who I think is great as well but sadly hasn't been used to great effect in recent years. Den was the original EastEnders Hardman and he is the real deal.
Still a disgrace to this day he was killed off for good. At least with his original demise it was left open ended as you never saw den properly hit the water or take the bullet. If they had to write him out like they did I’d rather had seen den shamed out of the square or forced out by the community in some manner due to his wickedness or scheming, although he would have had the last laugh somehow. Either that or put him in the run again due to the Mitchell’s in their revenge. Den vs grant is perhaps the greatest show down we were robbed from as fans.
This is a great upload, can't believe I've never commented on this before! Please could you tell me the date for Den roughing up Willmott-Brown? How have you been, by the way?
@@RandomUploads-ch3bh summer 88 shortly before Den went down, this storyline was done to keep Grantham onscreen for another 6 months after the actor had quit. It actually resulted in one of EEs finest hours, Den acknledging his mistakes in prison was brilliant, as was Den protecting poor Trevor Kellows from prison bullies such as Nick and Quennie, Dens scenes with Nick was magic (despite the actors real life mutual dislike for each other), Dens friendship with Barnsey was great (it didn't feel like EE had paired up two Alpha Males with the sole intention of having them fall out later on as it would be in todays heavier handed product), Trevors eventual suicide was tragic and Dens "final" episode was one of the shows best.

Den watts would be the only one that could take down the Mitchell brothers at the same time even though phil and grant were harder than him den would beat the both in a war
had its moments (Phil feud) but not a patch on his original run. The writing wasn't as strong...AND THEN THINGS GOT WORSE. After Grantham publicly fell out with TPTB, writers bent over backwords to bury the character by turning him into a sleazy old man and constantly having him outsmarted by Andy.

@tebraizshahzad3364 There's plenty from that era on here too.
Terrific upload, great vids.
This was a different Den to the pale excuse we saw in that stupid return. I can see exactly why he is seen as legendary as he is.
Brilliant best landlord they had
Den was a great bad guy, a very clever one. Never used his fists, was better mentally, wound his rivals up with words rather than fists.
He only punched Dennis and Tommy but his fight with Phil was good.
But ya know he could give some one a good decking if needs be, Danny Dyer I think pathetically tries to replicate him.

Den Watts calling that Black Man "Boy" was very brave to do on a UK Soap. If it had been the US there would have been an uproar.
