    I’ve had my smiley for 4 years now. One MAJOR thing you have to watch out for is plaque building up on your piercing (you need to gently brush that piercing) All the advice he gives is correct and I do agree if it starts affecting your gums/teeth TAKE IT OUT. I talk with my dentist every 6 months to see if there is any damage and from what I’m told hasn’t happened (surprisingly honestly but if it starts to I will take it out) but it’s my favorite piercing I have out of the 19 I wear but I 100% agree with all the points he has made! Don’t do heavy jewelry at allll! Every week I do take out my small barbell and replace it with a identical one to really clean and disinfect the one I’ve been wearing for a week. I hope this helps but again I agree with the risks/warnings he has given. I guess I’m just one of the lucky ones that my smiley hasn’t given me any trouble “yet”.

      Thank you for sharing your experience. So you haven't had the strange sudden swelling issue? I'm still puzzled why it happens and I wonder if you being diligent about keeping the jewelry clean is the answer.

    • @ashleyhoward5142
      @ashleyhoward5142 3 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      @@BodyPiercingTattooing my first year was definitely the roughest before I got into my current cleaning routine I do now. I did have random swelling in the beginning and I did notice it because of the plaque build up. The plaque will turn hard on the jewelry just like your teeth and having that move through the actually hole of the piercing always hurt and made it swell. So I’ve learned from my experience to always clean my jewelry. (I use a soft electric toothbrush and just set it on top of the piercing and do it’s magic) unless I’m taking it out/replacing it. It has migrated alittle but that was in the first year of having it and probably from me not taking care of it properly in the beginning. But since then for 3 years now I haven’t had any random swelling. On the plus side too my smiley won’t actually close now. So I hope this helps 😁

      @@ashleyhoward5142 I literally just left a comment about my experience I’ve had my for a little over a month and the plaque thing was stressing me out! That explains why it’s so irritated. It’s been find since I decided after the 4 weeks I’ll just remove it once a week and brush it thoroughly and then mouth wash and place it back. I’ve only done it once so far but once I get more jewelry I’ll do the replacing thing. I saw a video of someone brushing theirs while still in their mouth I thought it would make it migrate over time and it tugs a k title and I don’t really think that’s a good idea. I have actually had my smiley piercing done for about ten years now. I have primarily worn lighter weight jewelry in order to avoid rejection and do often wear a small ring so that i can tuck it up under my lip. I do not notice as much "tug" on this with the light ring as I do the standard ring or curved barbell that it was originally done with. I love my smiley as it is something that was quite painless for me and can be considered a bit of a secret. The biggest problem I have, which you did mention, is fear of rejection or tearing. As stated before, I wear lighter weight jewelry, but I started doing so after I noticed the piercing hole growing in size. After changing to a captive type nose ring, I have not had any issues.
    Love your videos and wish I had come across them sooner in my personal body modification journey. Thank you for the insights and hope to see continued growth in your channel!

My first week with it was the most painful but the action itself hurt less than having my lobes repierced. I am in love with my smiley and think it suits me very well. for anyone thinking of getting it done please read!:::
    I got my smiley pierced a month ago (5 weeks) I did a lot of research before getting this piercing. Sadly this video was not one of them. So far I’ve noticed it left and indent the first 2 weeks that I’ve had it. So far I have zero issues with it, I consider it a temporary piercing because of the damage it can cause so now that it’s healed I plan to switch the balls to plastic. Hopefully that would help slow down or prevent severe damage. I genuinely don’t think it’s meant or would possibly last a super long time honestly. The piercing does swell slightly when I eat something spicy but that was before it was fully healed and I forgot about it. It does kinds of “crash” onto your teeth when eating things like burgers or sandwiches it doesn’t hurt but it ‘sounds’ as if you bit the ball off. No one told me that anywhere online so be aware of that. I do love the piercing, I don’t regret it, but I wouldn’t persuade others to get it, or say yeah get it I was fine because all people are different. Brush gently 2x, sea salt rinse 2x daily, non alcohol mouth wash 2x daily, avoid spicy foods until it is healed. And the balls will get plaque on them and once it’s healed I would suggest to taking it out and brushing it because trying to clean both sides while it’s in your mouth can cause tugging, and overtime it could migrate. Please monitor it anything usual or damage you notice please remove it!

    personally, i’ve had my smiley for about 8 months now, and i love it. i’ve had a few piercings now and it’s been my least problematic, i’d go as far to say i’ve had no issues with the piercing itself.
    the piercing of it was actually not that painful. it’s never bled, swell or hurt since i got it. i even ate a spicy meal after i got it and again had no problems.
    i know that everybody is different but for me it’s been pretty good and i love the way it looks.
    i probably have some erosion on my teeth and gums, but i don’t think it’s been anything too bad because i haven’t had it that long.
    it was the first piercing i got and i have never wanted to take it out, when i have taken it out it hasn’t closed up. yeah it’s only been out for maybe a day, but it was easy getting it back in.
    switching jewellery can be difficult but not that bad.

Infact not to make piercing parlors look bad, because I have mad respect but the two peirceings I've had professionally are the ones that I had the most trouble with and didn't heal. 🤷‍♀️ I like doing it at home because if it didn't work out at least it didn't cost me alot.

      It is still softer than the metal the jewelry is made of. So, if you have jewelry banging against it, over and over it will cause damage.

  • @cosmiccandy8704

    The jewellery you wear really matters. If you wear a CBR, the ball will rub on the gum/enamel where your front teeth meet, causing erosion/a gap. If you wear a horseshoe, the balls will rub directly on the enamel, again causing erosion. I honestly believe this is because the jewellery is not lying flat, hence the uneven pressure on the largest areas (the ball bearings) are where you see the effects of friction.
    The best thing from what I can see, is to wear is a plain hoop as your standard jewelllery so it lies more flush with the gum/tooth and hence far less likely to cause friction. A flat backed horseshoe might be another alternative, but I feel any smiley jewellery with ball bearings should only be worn rarely.
    I personally wear a plain hoop which feels fine. I do have CBRs and horseshoes for when I want to make a statement but if I pay attention, I can feel and sometimes even hear the ball bearings rubbing against my teeth. So I wear with caution.
    As for smiley rejection, mine rejected. Then I let it fully heal an re-pierced it just behind the scar tissue. Been in a few years now. No issues :)

    I had a smiley piercing for 3 years. I took it out because it would get hurt at times. My main reason was having to get scanned in a hospital, x-rays, and MRI’s. It became a nuisance to have to take it out consistently, and having it become inflamed at times.

    (Just found your channel to educate myself further in the professional piercing world.)
    I’ve had my smiley pierced for five-ish years.
    I’ve also had to re-pierce said piercing MULTIPLE times over 9-ish years due to it migrating, forgetting to put jewelry back or “drooping”.
    I haven’t seen any tooth or gum damage to myself, (I’m not a orthodontist, so my observations mean nothing) mostly because I use a 16g curved barbell flipped up or a 20g CBR with a 1.5mm ball (that’s soldered onto one side of the ring).
    But I have seen damage done to a friend’s teeth and gum line due to a curved barbell’s balls constantly rubbing.
    The irreversible damage happened within a year.

    I have had my smiley for 20 years this year! I am 38 and got it when I was 18 and paid $25 for it. I never once had it grow out or swell. I have buck teeth and this hides it wonderfully. I have found it’s nearly impossible to find a diamond ball that doesn’t slide around backwards. If you know of any smiley jewelry that has the diamond that doesn’t slide. Please let me know! I’d gladly send pics if interested. Smitty at Big Brain in Omaha, Nebraska did my piercing.

    • @BodyPiercingTattooing
      @BodyPiercingTattooing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for sharing your experience and you might have close to the record for the longest lasting smiley. I would suggest a fixed bead or beaded ring where the ball is soldered to the ring on one side or a hinged ring. The main issue would be getting the jewelry closed and making sure the seam on the beaded ring or the hinge or seam on the hinged ring didn't end up and the piercing. This could cause damage.

    I've had my smiley pierced for a while. It's super cute, didn't hurt to pierce, and thankfully there was no swelling even during the healing process. The healing process wasn't that fun, the only real negative I have noticed is that it has migrated slightly, and that the hole has gotten rather large. It was pierced at a 16 gauge and it has stretched to a 12 gauge. I can go weeks without wearing it and still be able to fit the 16g jewelry in.

    i've been skeptical on this piercing for a while, but it looks really *really* cute, but lowkey my biggest fear is tooth decay, since my mum wanted to go to dentist school, she was usually strict with my mouth and told me many rotten mouth stories that scared tf out of me. lmao.

    I appreciated this video, I’ve been doing tons of research because I’m strongly considering getting a smiley piercing. It’s a difficult decision, I absolutely love the look & I’ve seen many people say they’ve had no issue with damaging teeth or their gums, even after multiple years, but obviously that’s still a concern. I don’t want to end up regretting my decision and I’m wondering what I could do to minimize oral damage but still have the piercing show when I smile. Oh also, I’m actually allergic to metal ear jewelry, and I’m concerned that metal will agitate my mouth too (would gold jewelry be more beneficial?)

    • @BodyPiercingTattooing
      @BodyPiercingTattooing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I know that it may seem like there is a lot if people with no issues but for every success story, there about 2-3 horror stories. You should understand the risks are high and if you notice any issues, remove the jewelry asap.
      As far as metals, cases are you have had reaction to cheap jewelry from a retail shop that was made of God knows what. Implant grade metals will not cause the same issues. If you are worried and want to hedge your bets, I would suggest Titanium or 14kt or better solid gold. Gold especially 18kt would limit damage because it is softer than teeth.

      Like I said monitor the piercing and if you notice damage to your teeth and gums, the piercing shifting and moving or swelling after the piercing heals, remove the jewelry.
      My biggest issue with this piercing and other high risk piercings is piercers not informing their clients before they do them. Yes, clients should research piercings but someone presenting themselves as an "expert" should feel responsible to inform their clients about all the risks involved with any piercing.

I've been doing salt water rinses daily since I pierced it and so far I've had no bleeding or anything at all. Also I always make sure everything that goes into my mouth is as clean as possible.

      Well since you already did it, the only thing I would suggest is to rinse with Biotene mouthwash a few times a day for the first week. The other thing is to keep a close eye on your gums and teeth.

      I'm sorry to hear that. Any jewelry that is always in contact with the area can cause damage.

    It closing rapidly is a good thing for when you are done with it, any piercing that closes rapidly is good so when you are done with it, it's not noticeable

      Not as much as there is with other piercings. However, if there is a visible one, it should be avoided.

    I have a smiley I got it done with a horseshoe with two balls at the end it hasn’t made any difference to my teeth or gums but I have had it for just under a year i recently ordered a closed ring for it ( clicker to be exact it’s cobalt blue really looking forwards to wearing it ) because of how many people have said it is likely to damage my teeth

      It isn't something that happens over night. It's more gradual, short of taking a photo of your teeth and gums every month, I doubt visually or otherwise you will notice the damage. Then sensitivity sets in and at that point the damage maybe beyond repair.

      Which is the key is to have thst information and make an educated decision on whether the piercing is worth the risks.

    I've got a Medusa and I'd love a smiley. My question is whether or not I could wear both piercings at the same time. I understand the risks of the piercing, but I had to search for 6 years to find a piercer willing to do my snug, and the piercer I found only did it because I told them that if they didn't pierce it for me, I'd do it myself. I knew I'd need to remove it if it started rejecting, but I wanted to give it a shot. 8 years later I still have it and love it. I'm willing to take a risk as long as I know the potential complications, and I'm good at maintaining my piercings, which is how I have a healed snug on undersized and slightly deformed ears. Just hoping for information about a Medusa in conjunction with a smiley.

    Halfway through this long ass video. Just chiming in to say had mine for like 4 years so far and haven't had any problems. I've changed the ring 4 or 5 times and I loved having all of them. Listen to your own feelings and make your own choices. Not trying to shad this gentleman. But I'd say let him give it a try himself and then speak from experience instead of, "hey, I have enough experience to speak for you, even though I didn't try it myself.
    Glad he finished up w ask your local guy or gal their opinion. And ask for references

      Thank you for your input and sharing your experience. As far as me not having the piercing, I've been piercing for close to 30 years and have seen all the issues of with thus piercing first hand. I fact I've removed jewelry from piercings that have caused gum damage, suddenly start swelling after 5 or 6 years and various other problems.
      So when I speak about this piercing it is not just based on my own experience having the piercing but the experience of hundreds of people's experiences.
