Ich find es richtig schade zu wissen das dieses Schiff nicht mehr unter uns weilt! Als ich das erfahren hab sind mir die Tränen gekomen weil ich dieses Schiff eigentlich seit meiner Kindheit kannte als der Luxuslinder schlechthin in meinem Herzen! Ich freute mich jedes Jahr sie zu sehen wenn ich nach Cuxhaven gefahren bin. Leb wohl du Göttin ich vermisse dich!
Auch mir tut es immer noch weh dieses Video zu sehen... Bin hier 1986 und 1987 als Matrose gefahren und habe hier meine heutige Frau und Mutter unserer zwei Kinder , damals Stewardess, kennen und lieben gelernt. Eine unvergessliche Zeit, die ich niemals missen möchte. RIP alte Lady, unvergessen...

Sie hätte noch einige viele Jahre auf See verdient gehabt, oder wenigstens einen würdigen Abschied... R.I.P Wappen sie Ruhe in Frieden.
Ein sehr trauriger Anblick. Wir fuhren oft mit der "Wappen von Hamburg" von Cuxhaven nach Helgoland und zurück. So manche Bockwurst und so manches Bier wurden während dieser Zeit auf diesem schönen Schiff vernichtet. Und wieder geht ein treuer Begleiter.

I bet it does now, cat food tins and razers.... Richard Boudville, i always hope ships get used as houses before scrapping. I had hope of buying the MV Communicator, ex home of laser, laser hit hits, holland fm and orkney superstation.... So much history got cut away.
Richard Boudville I worked & lived on the "Wappen" as a DJ for a couple of months back in the late 70s she was a nice little ship and I have some nice memories of her. I found this video very sad and moving. R.I.P old girl.
Die "Wappen von Hamburg" hätte auch als Hamburger Attraktion erhalten werden müssen. Aber in meiner Heimat Hamburg ist vieles nach dem Krieg bis heute vorsichtig gesagt "schiefgegangen"..... Schade !

In an earlier age ships were sailed until they were totally unseaworthy;nowadays,the profit motive,that is,vast profits, dominates and all ships,whether seaworthy or not are scrapped when they still have decades of useful life in them.So much for concern for the environment.We live,literally,in a throw away society.
It's quite strange seeing this video once again after my last watching of it. But wow, some of these photos of Mercator II (Wappen Von Hamburg) are quite liminal like without anybody seen in plain sight. Specifically this photo at 0:42 , it looks incredibly liminal without anyone seen. All you could see are the street lights, the light of that car in the back, and the flashing light of the camera hitting the Mercator II. This photo at 0:56 is also another example of being incredibly liminal, its even more darker than the one that i've mentioned above and a lot more lonely.

Sie haben recht, diese Kreuzfahrtriesen sind zwar siperluxuriös innen, aber "Schiffe" sind das nicht mehr - es sind nur hässliche schwimmende Kästen, hoch über Wasser - nichts unter Wasser, keine schiffige Form mehr. Diese "Wappen von Hamburg" war doch, in meiner Erinnerung, ein ganz modernes Segelschiff. Wie kann man so etwas nur vernichten ? Mir unbegreiflich ! @@wq6737 Nein, nie; da gab es bei der "Wappen von Hamburg" überhaupt keine Möglichkeit zu - wo hätten da Segel hingesollt? Da waren für ein Bäderschiff ganz normale Aufbauten für die Passagiere. Man sieht sie im Video nicht, da sie - in Erwartung des Umbaus - entfernt worden waren. Die Dieselmotoren waren keine Hilfsmotoren, sondern die einzige Antriebsquelle. Von 1965 bis 2006 fuhr die "Wappen" von Hamburg bzw. Cuxhaven im Bäderdienst dieselgetrieben nach Helgoland.

Ich dachte, daß die W.v.H. das Segelschiff sei, welches in einer Fernsehreihe, als "Segelkreuzfahrtschiff" gezeigt wurde. Der Rumpf war so schön geformt, daß ich den keinen Motorschiff zuordnen konnte. Fehler meinerseits.
Whats missing about this ship is its bridge,it was being remove,only whats left its lower ground.Well,the ships engine was being removed completely for museum display.And the recycled metal from the ship was selled to the junk shop for scrap,The excavators are trying to pinch of the metal.
The superstructure was already removed and cut for scrap. The engine was not removed for resale or a museum. It was munched into small pieces by the scrap shears so the metal can be recycled. They may try to sell the engine complete, but it is a big component and the a handling is difficult and expensive if there is no buyers. In this case they could not find a buyer so the twin MAN diesels were munched in situ.
@@PreservationEnthusiast well they do that to other ships when they retire for example Cherry venture it was a cargo ship that ran aground in south east Queensland the Cherry venture sat at the beach until 2007 when the whole wreck was Demolished they did saved the propeller of the ship how ever the whole ship was buried under the sand then fast forward to 2013 when the sand was washed away revealing the whole ship again by this time the whole ship was fully gone nothing had remained of it for that her own propeller is on a display at Rainbow beach
@TIMHDTV Correct, but only 2-3 engines of this make and type still operational in the world, so no market for spares etc. no reason to put them in stock. also they do not fullfil the IMO regulation, so they could for goods reasons not be installed in another vessel.
The ship was sold in 2006 to a person who wanted to turn it into a luxury vessel but ran out of money half the way. The bridge had been removed to replace it by a new one, but this turned the Wappen of Hamburg into kind of a wreck when work had to be stopped due to lack of money
Wherever I look these days I see profit placed above repurposing so much that it makes me ashamed to be called Homo sapiens sapiens...we should rename ourselves to something more befitting: Homo sapiens profiteeriens...sadly.
what a shame... why has this vessel not be rebuilt as a trainee clipper sailing ship ? the hull is of such beautiness... for a seaman the pics of destroying really pain....

above comment DK method is the best practice. look on following.... a) the ramp is not level, probably soft-clay soil, not concrete. b) using anchor chain to pull it in... result ripped hull... not smooth pull (because of #a) c) where is the bins to contain the scrap metal. they just let drop on ground d) should start with top,,,, not bottom (could have crushed machinery) my view DK practice with ripping/scrap is bad. probably had best with removeable and reuse.
ummmmm ita called retiring if the ship is planned to become a reef it will be cleaned out and will- well sinking it plus sinking ships as reefs makes new home for sea life
Always sad to see ships being scrapped, regardless of type, age or history. However, this scrapping was done in a rather "dignified" way, at least she escaped being rammed onto a beach in India or Bangladesh just to be butchered in the most disgraceful of ways... Why her engines were destroyed they way they were is beyond me thus.

Ja ich lebe in cuxhaven und immer als ich klein war hab ich im Sommer zugeschaut wie das Schiff abgelegt hat und abends wieder ankam

I am an old sailor and found this video very sad watching a ship being nibbled into oblivion. For some this ship was home for a number of years.
It would have made a lovely house boat, nothing wrong with re use before recycle.

À 6 anos e meio atrás, o barco mercator 0001 foi demolido, em 2012.
3 anos mais tarde, assisti esse vídeo no dia 03/11/2015.
She was demolished in 2010-2011.
Muito triste esse flme ainda mais com uma grande trilha sonora, mas infelizmente é assim, pois de sua sucata surgirao navios mais lindo como esse!

DK is one of the leading in the field of ship recycling, and are doing it very very well. Infact so well that the rules within shipbreaking has been written on the way it is being done in DK.

above comment DK method is the best practice. look on following....
a) the ramp is not level, probably soft-clay soil, not concrete.
b) using anchor chain to pull it in... result ripped hull... not smooth pull (because of #a)
c) where is the bins to contain the scrap metal. they just let drop on ground
d) should start with top,,,, not bottom (could have crushed machinery)
my view DK practice with ripping/scrap is bad. probably had best with removeable and reuse.

Better to see them scrapping these ships rather than just sinking them for artificial reefs. There's alot of money in scrap iron.

Always sad to see ships being scrapped, regardless of type, age or history. However, this scrapping was done in a rather "dignified" way, at least she escaped being rammed onto a beach in India or Bangladesh just to be butchered in the most disgraceful of ways... Why her engines were destroyed they way they were is beyond me thus.
