You two are amateurs. You both need to go without shoes outside and in indoor public places more often. The first time/day will hurt, but after a while, the soles of your feet will toughen up like leather. Walking across streets of asphalt and stuff becomes like second nature. We can't do much about the glass, gross stuff, etc. on the floors, so just use common sense and try walking in cleaner areas, avoiding any rocks, glass, gross stuff, etc. as much as possible. I usually go barefoot/socked-foot outside in warmer weather - don't know if I can do this in the dead of winter, but some people do. I live in Canada. I usually wear durable footwear outside during cold weather, but many times when I'm inside public places like churches, soup kitchens, libraries, some "artistic" type places, and other social hangouts that are not franchises, etc., I just take off my shoes/boots and go in socks or go barefoot. The muscles in my calves and feet become so strong, and my soles become so "leathery" and strong that I hardly need any shoes anymore (except for dangerous situations that require footwear, like steel-toed boots, for formal situations, and for extreme cold weather). As far as getting gross stuff on your feet - don't worry - you can always wash them later. I encourage the both of you to go barefoot more often - your feet will toughen up, and the both of you will get used to it and have less or no cuts/scrapes on your feet. Use common sense where you choose to walk barefoot though. I hope this helps. :)
