    This review was originally posted in August 2010, and is a recut version that runs 3m shorter than the original, with numerous cuts to film clips, remove some jokes I don't feel worked, and tighten up the pacing. If the review doesn't look great, there is a reason for that: my friend Chris edited this review, and I don't have the final master file for it, I only have the heavily compressed FLV file that I uploaded to Blip (you got better quality doing it that way than them doing the conversion for you). As such, in order to re-edit this, I had to convert that back into an MP4 file to edit that, so this is essentially a fourth generation file, although I have nevertheless upscaled it to HD to preserve what quality there is. I've also applied noise reduction throughout the review to reduce tape and camera noise. That's part of the reason this heavily-requested review has been away for so long. This re-post is to coincide with Night School, as Kevin Hart is in this in a prominent uncredited role that he'd likely not want to be reminded of. Have fun!

    I've seen movies made back in the 1920s that have aged better than this movie from 11 years ago. The sad part about Epic movie in particular is there are a few jokes that could have worked, but they lack any context and most of them drag on way too long.

    Considering this movie was from 2006, the “weapon of mass destruction” could’ve been potentially and maybe even cleverly used to parody George Bush’s reasoning for us getting into a war with Iraq, but then I realize that would take more effort and thinking in a movie that lacks it.

    • @carrierinker-schaeffer7947
      @carrierinker-schaeffer7947 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      "The much-superior 'Hot Fuzz'", huh? I doubt it, Jack Monaghan; both Edgar Wright AND Seltzerberg are equally insulting in terms of comedy (Seltzerberg, because of their use of gross-out humor and pop cultural references; and Edgar Wright, because of his use of flashy edits/transitions [which he CONSTANTLY mistakes for jokes] and... pop cultural references). There's no difference between Wright and Seltzerberg, in my view; both are con artists of the highest grade, and BOTH are utterly clueless about how comedy works (with the cluelessness, in both cases, bordering on comedic vandalism). It's just that, in this instance, one fraudster - or PAIR of fraudsters, to be specific - turned out to be more successful than the other. At day's end, however, Wright and Seltzerberg are still two sides of the same thalidomide idiot (like James Cameron and Michael Bay, or Adam Sandler and Sarah Silverman), and those who don't notice this fact of nature will ALWAYS be comedically illiterate in my book.
      [NOTE: If I wanted to see a film that succeeded where "Hot Fuzz" failed, I'd simply put on "Pulp Fiction". At least with THAT film, I could make out the punchlines to SOME of the jokes therein {e.g., the "Gold Watch" scene featuring Christopher Walken; the punchline there was that Walken's character went into too much detail about how that watch was preserved... complete with a "hiding-it-up-the-ass" quip}.]

I hate the fact that if one movie or show becomes successful, a multitude of knock offs follow suit. These knock offs become so ubiquitous that their premise defines an entire era. Instead of pushing for quality, the entertainment industries use movies like this one as "filler" until either something original comes along or something old can be successfully revived. Anything to make money, I guess.

      @@DVDandFilmBloke Is it sad that when I hear Life Of Brian I think of the Family Guy episode where Brian died? And then was brought back a couple episodes later? THAT is when I truly think the show went beyond the point of no return (Also still think Quagmire killed the pooch)

    I'm actually a bit confused, I dont know if they released a different cut for Mexico, but this is the first time I see that crystal of "mass destruction". The plot I remember was just them having to deafeat the villain.

      That was only in the unrated version. The theatrical version in America didn’t have it either.

    So I know this could be said about most jokes in this thing but...that Harry Potter joke is so baffling. Wouldn't that joke be better used on something that actually uses grown ass adults to play teens or something where characters are kinda stuck in a stasis like Dawson's Creek for the first or the Simpsons for the latter? The Harry Potter cast started as the same age as their characters and by the time of the last film were only around 4 years older than their characters.

    I remember at one point I was considering watching this movie, but then one of my friends showed me this review on the original website. Dodged a bullet there!
    One minor complaint, though: I'll never understand why everyone hates Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory so much. I really think it's a great movie, and I did see the Gene Wilder version first.

      @@scottylewis8124 Regardless, it still sucked in that it turned Dahl's Marty Stu Charlie into a Purity Stu and Dahl's mysterious and eccentric Willy Wonka into a Cloud Cuckoolander with daddy issues and a dark backstory that was done too many times, such as with the Grinch in 2000 (and 2018) and the Penguin (who's nothing like the Penguin in the comics, who in those was a criminal who wore black and white and hated penguins, not a conman raised at a circus and living with penguins in Batman Returns), and nobody ever asked how any of those characters became who they were in the movies. Unsurprisingly, Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory can be considered Deader Than Disco, according to the YMMV subpage of TV Tropes' article on the movie. Also, Burton himself said, "Anyone who knows me will say I would never read a comic book," which to Kevin Smith "explains fucking Batman."
