I was trying to find this poem in written form for my Poetry II paper for Masters. While I did find the written form, this video version brings an entirely new soul to the poem. Performance poetry is something new for me, and definitely pushes me to get 'out of the box'. Reggae and rhythm, and their association with poetry is an interesting topic!
This may not be everyone's cup of tea but I love giving this to students expecting the sort of poetry that old anthologies are full of, and see their faces change when they start to get the passion and the natural verve that Zephaniah shows here. Poetry shouldn't ever be forced and that's why poetry like this works for so many people. It skips off the page and into your mind; the rhythm bounces about and the words get changed from the original, written version in the books and it doesn't notice or matter. Let poetry come from within - from the heart, and therefore at some speed - or not at all!
Modern poetry would have decayed and died without guys like him.
