How about 2 layers of chalk paint as primer? Is that a possibility? (I have so much chalk paint!) :-)
This will work as well:) Chalk paint doesn't need primer:)

does the primer help from the can rustic later? I have the same can and it beginning to rust
You need to remove rust first and then apply primer. I would use really hard brush and sand paper to scrape it off
