We don't have have blue or purple potatoes in my country but I do have purple sweet potatoes. I hope they have many of these health properties! Plus, they are delicious too!
Thank you very much for very informative presentation about purple potatoes. I always suspected that they have amazing health benefits on top of delicious flavor.
You are welcome. I just tried a newer variety of purple potato called "bora valley" and they are wonderfully creamy and don't have as much of the metallic taste that some purple/blue potatoes have.
i've just discovered your channel and am enjoying it very much. we are trying to incorporate as many high nutrient density food crops into our permaculture food forest as possible. we eat purple potatoes everyday, usually in a wrap mixed with many other vegetables and i love a chipotle glaze on top.
Wonderful news as mine are growing happily in the garden now here in the deep southern end if the US…as always thank you for sharing your time and knowledge to help better us all …stay blessed
Thanks for the video. I breed new potato varieties myself as I show on my channel, and I am also working on purple-fleshed varieties. Nice work but not commercially attractive because the consumer does not pick it up. I don't know how to market these varieties.
This is fantastic information! We grow the All Blue potato and this is a timely video as we were just discussing yesterday about changing our diet slightly and one of the topics was growing more of the blue potatoes. Now we will have to add some of the purple varieties that you have mentioned as well. Thank you for sharing 😃
Wonderful! Hope you enjoy them. The new variety that I have, but it might be nearly impossible to find, is called, "bora valley." It has an incredible consistency when cooked. It is creamy and buttery without any butter.
Have you tried the stokes purple? So good. Deep purple. My brain needs all the help. Expensive to buy so Lord willing I hope to grow some. Also blueberries and those dark carrots.
Problem with black rice is that 90 percent of the anthocyanins in black rice is destroyed while cooking because anthocyanins are very heat sensitive and also what is not destroyed is trapped within the non soluble fiber. So very very little anthocyanin is actually absorbed.
Thank you for posting this. If possible, when siting research, could you also link the articles in your show notes? It makes it easier than stopping the video and writing down the names of the articles. Thanks!!!
@@HealthAndHomestead I accidently found out that raw potato juice cures fever. I was taking raw potato juice for gastric and to my surprise I my fever was going away. The next time my son had a cold, I tried the juice on him.He too was cured.
There is a variety called, “bora valley” that tastes good and has an amazingly buttery consistency but I think has a slight metallic aftertaste (my wife doesn’t taste the metallic flavor). Adirondack blue is another variety that to me has a strong metal flavor, not my favorite.
@@HealthAndHomestead Thank you. The potatoes are really pretty. I love Yukon gold because they taste buttery. I would like to feel better but I don’t like anything that tastes metallic.
I grew them last year (Purple Majesty) and it tasted pretty much like a "white" potato, and very creamy tasting. I am planting them again this year. They don't seem to keep as long as Idaho potatoes, etc. so I eat them within a few weeks of harvesting.
It just so happens that I have been eating a lot of purple potatoes lately (unfortunately, as far as the varieties we grew last year are concerned, the purple ones had the shortest storage time, so I'm eating up a bunch of sprouting potatoes). They are very, very purple and I've been enjoying them! Unfortunately, I don't know what their variety is because we got one of the mixed "mystery boxes" from the company. It cost less, but we generally don't know what they are. Alas. My husband's favourite is the Purple Viking. It is actually only purple-skinned, so it's not as good as the ones you're talking about, but it is an excellent mashing potato. :)
I already had a plan to graft other nightshades onto potato stalks in containers, but I wasn't sure what I was goito do with all the potatoes because I can't have too much of them until I reach 'fighting weight' due to the starch content. But these sound like their other nutrients would offset the starch factor. (I'm on the MTHF-R gene mutation diet restrictions) I even just found some mutli colored sweet pepper seeds that have purple peppers along with the purple potato seeds! I could have a whole theme going and have to make up a new alliterative tongue twister! Too badd egg plants don't have a P name!
I find potatoes irritate my gut I have Crohn’s disease I can have sweet potatoes but not the other ones I’ve not tried blue potatoes so I’m unsure if it’ll help I’ve heard potatoes are a deadly nightshade
Blue potatoes had fewer insect troubles than regular. Kids like candy made of them. the fries and so on. I do not consume carbs. Like most adults among us, there's a problem with carbs.
The “blue zones” are cultures of longevity in the world. They are all high carb consuming groups. They eat about 50-85% carbs. But they eat whole, unrefined carbs.
@@HealthAndHomestead Dad's side of the family, light on carbs, often live close to or over 100 years mark. Mom's side, high carb, short life-span, diabetes. Now most are back on traditional American Indian diet, carnivore with some carbs. After the Tarahumara famine (caused by Monsanto's GMO maize), my ex's family went traditional, carnivore. Maize is a treat, usually for beer. Diabetes is fading out tho they like sweets.
@@marschlosser4540 Likely, again, because they were eating refined carbs. All plant foods are carb-based, though not all of them high carb. You can eat a plant-based diet without going high-carb and it will be even healthier than the meat-based diet. Meat won't spark diabetes, but it lacks the healing properties of things like leafy greens and berries. You talk about living to around 100, but there are people around the world with plant-based diets living to 120+. It's not all about diet, either. It's a whole lifestyle thing. @@ShalomSimplified Everyone is different. Carbs are unfriendly toward me. Refined or not, the next day i'm dragging and can hardly work. A bottle of homebrew which is a very simple thing to make, is like having a bottle of soda. A traditional diet for us is 80% meat, high animal fats, and very little grain, fruit or vegetables. Those who aren't traditional suffer a lot of disorders with diabetes being most common. There are people who go for months, even years, eating nothing but meat. We don't live very long eating like whites.
@@marschlosser4540 That's kind of a funny thing to say, since most "whites" have a very meat-heavy diet. The diet that people like me advocate is not traditional for whites, either. It is a diet that is more likely to be seen in Asia, actually.
But wait a minute. So in certain cases like the purple potato it is better to microwave it? I was so sure about the evil microwave.! So, are you going to microwave them for your family? If I know you are doing it, then maybe I will too! You've troubled an already troubled soul! Ha!

I had to check. It is by St. John’s Bay. Blessings to you.
I'm wondering how many other purple veggies have the same benefits?!? Thanks for this video! Very helpful.
I wonder if it's also present in purple sweet potatoes and purple yam.
I wonder if these results apply to vegetable chips that include blue potatoes??
Does blue potato caramelize while deep frying?
