I don't know if you jumped to the end without watching it, but this is about proper language used *for* trans parents. This is not demanding to change the language used for everyone. What harm does it do to you if a trans parent is referred to by their preferred term in the birth certificate of their child? Be compassionate, not defensive.
birth certificates are not meant to reflect what gender role is comfortable to the parents its meant to state who played what role in creating the person (who gave the egg and who gave the sperm) and where they were born. the document is property of the child and the child is their own person. the parents have no right to alter documents that dont belong to them just because it makes them uncomfortable.
That's simply not true in reality though - theres nothing about genetic relation on birth certificates, and many non-genetically related parents are included on birth certs. For example, in the UK, the husband of a woman who gives birth is automatically given parental rights and 'father' status even if not genetically related. Sperm donors and eggs donors don't go on birth certificates. Meanwhile, surrogates go down on the birth certificate even if they are unrelated to the child AND are not going to be the parent. In many countries people who are adopted are given new birth certificates. It's clearly not genetics, but the role that the person plays in that child's life that is often reflected, and the outdated systems in the UK aren't even reflecting that in the case of surrogacy, or indeed trans people.

Transmale myself with a love for anthropology, my grandmother has the PHD in anthropology and I don't but definitely inherited a love for it - I think it's a beautiful statement. It's a profound statement that I really needed to hear and often heard in many different ways from my anthropologist grandmother. Society and culture and religion is layers and layers of human beings giving meaning to what they are experiencing and witnessing. We are fully able to accept a male seahorse gives birth because we have not given layers and layers of 'meaning' to that experience. We cannot accept that a male identified human being gives birth because of the layers and layers of meaning we have given to the experience. And now we're terrified to evolve the concept we have created and I honestly don't know when or if that will happen. I kept my ovaries and uterus because after stripping away all the layers of 'meaning' - they become biological parts capable of a biological process. And how awesome would it be, primarily loving men, to have the ability to have children as a gay male with another gay male? But society honestly alarms me. I want to be hopeful we can evolve and give new meaning and new layers but are we too stuck? I don't want to be defeatist, I don't. Society does not need to affirm people's identity issues, not in speech, not in healthcare, and not in official documents. Someone who gives birth is not a man and is not a father and they have no right to compel society's perception of them.
Fun fact : society is changing whether you like it or not. We've seen how the views on women, people of colors and gay people have changed with time. Each time, there was a group of people being against that, but it happened anyway.

The whole birth sertificate documentation is an outdated thing. They aren't necessary in a modern world. I live in an european country where they aren't used, it hasn't affected me at all. The goverment still magically knows that I was born and who my parents are, but I don't need to hold onto a piece of paper to be able to prove that.

This is more complicated than it needs to be. The birth certificates should reflect reality. Use gestational and get on with it. Ditto the confusion with adoptive children, whose Bc’s don’t reflect adoption. It was meant to be helpful, but it is for many a heartbreaking lie.

At risk of being called a self-hating gay, there's always something that's rubbed me the wrong way about gay or trans couples who decide to do IVF or surrogacy instead of adopt. Adoption is no more expensive or strenuous than those biological methods (I know people who have spent tens of thousands of dollars on surrogacy only for it to fail), and your sexuality has placed you in the perfect position to become a parent to a child who doesn't have a home or family. Instead, you decide to take the selfish route and reproduce anyway, just because you want to see yourself replicated in your child. It's just not right, in my opinion.

I honestly agree- hot take, but I don't think having a biological child is something everyone is entitled to. I generally dislike surrogacy regardless of the couple's sexuality, because it seems like it's just poor people being taken advantage of by people who can afford to pay for it. Unless it's a friend of the couple or something who wants to be their surrogate for free, I really just think commercial surrogacy is plain unethical.

"It's hard to explain but I know I'm right" is an attitude one constantly comes up against - a religious faith in something they can't define. Well you've captured the essence of the problems with gender ideology in modern times. It's really an overplayed hand. There are people with gender dysphoria, who feel uncomfortable in the sex they are. How to best ease that discomfort seems to be what's called medically transitioning (where one sex adopts some of the appearance and other qualities of the other.). But again TRAs overplayed their hand by saying they *have* changed sex (you can't yet), aspects like deadnaming rules are really arbitrary and electively offensive... Even the word 'trans woman' is inaccurate: What they really are is trans feminine, men who wish to be perceived and identify as culturally female, because you *can't* fully transition into a woman, an adult human female, as a male. All of this needs to be ironed out before the trans movement really can expect to achieve its goals of widespread medical availability and employment non-discrimination.
This is ultimately about how people feel. We shouldn’t try and dictate or dismiss how others feel. While it may not be important to some it’s vital for others. An empathetic approach is a helpful place to start. I don’t understand how trans people feel and I probably never will. But condemnation isn’t ever going to be a good approach.

4:00 it doesn’t need to make sense what the guardian’s gender identity is. What matters is that said individual is able to take care of the child. Why even factor in what their gender needs to be? They just need to be CAPABLE.

Trans is great. However, we can have children under 18 make these decisions until they are an adult. They can't get tattoos, can't drive etc. There are child protections for a reason.

I don't know if you jumped to the end without watching it, but this is about proper language used *for* trans parents. This is not demanding to change the language used for everyone. What harm does it do to you if a trans parent is referred to by their preferred term in the birth certificate of their child? Be compassionate, not defensive.
birth certificates are not meant to reflect what gender role is comfortable to the parents its meant to state who played what role in creating the person (who gave the egg and who gave the sperm) and where they were born. the document is property of the child and the child is their own person. the parents have no right to alter documents that dont belong to them just because it makes them uncomfortable.

That's simply not true in reality though - theres nothing about genetic relation on birth certificates, and many non-genetically related parents are included on birth certs. For example, in the UK, the husband of a woman who gives birth is automatically given parental rights and 'father' status even if not genetically related. Sperm donors and eggs donors don't go on birth certificates. Meanwhile, surrogates go down on the birth certificate even if they are unrelated to the child AND are not going to be the parent. In many countries people who are adopted are given new birth certificates. It's clearly not genetics, but the role that the person plays in that child's life that is often reflected, and the outdated systems in the UK aren't even reflecting that in the case of surrogacy, or indeed trans people.

It's a profound statement that I really needed to hear and often heard in many different ways from my anthropologist grandmother. We are fully able to accept a male seahorse gives birth because we have not given layers and layers of 'meaning' to that experience. We cannot accept that a male identified human being gives birth because of the layers and layers of meaning we have given to the experience. And now we're terrified to evolve the concept we have created and I honestly don't know when or if that will happen. I kept my ovaries and uterus because after stripping away all the layers of 'meaning' - they become biological parts capable of a biological process. And how awesome would it be, primarily loving men, to have the ability to have children as a gay male with another gay male? But society honestly alarms me. I want to be hopeful we can evolve and give new meaning and new layers but are we too stuck? I don't want to be defeatist, I don't. The whole birth sertificate documentation is an outdated thing. They aren't necessary in a modern world. I live in an european country where they aren't used, it hasn't affected me at all. The goverment still magically knows that I was born and who my parents are, but I don't need to hold onto a piece of paper to be able to prove that.

At risk of being called a self-hating gay, there's always something that's rubbed me the wrong way about gay or trans couples who decide to do IVF or surrogacy instead of adopt. Adoption is no more expensive or strenuous than those biological methods (I know people who have spent tens of thousands of dollars on surrogacy only for it to fail), and your sexuality has placed you in the perfect position to become a parent to a child who doesn't have a home or family. Instead, you decide to take the selfish route and reproduce anyway, just because you want to see yourself replicated in your child. It's just not right, in my opinion.

I honestly agree- hot take, but I don't think having a biological child is something everyone is entitled to. I generally dislike surrogacy regardless of the couple's sexuality, because it seems like it's just poor people being taken advantage of by people who can afford to pay for it. Unless it's a friend of the couple or something who wants to be their surrogate for free, I really just think commercial surrogacy is plain unethical.

There is no internal feeling that is exclusive to men or women (or boys/girls), what makes anyone a man or a woman is being either male or female and reaching adulthood. Their sex and stage of physical maturity makes them men or women, not some "feeling" they have.
Believing there is some "essence" specific to males or female as far as feelings go, that can manifest "in the wrong body", is akin to a religious belief, having faith in something that is impossible to prove or disprove. The thing is though, that no one on the "trans" side can actually even explain what this "essence" is, they can't even explain it to themselves yet have convinced themselves that the feeling they have means they "are in the wrong body" - without realising that their discomfort simply stems from not realising that they view conforming to sexist stereotypes as legitimate measures of manhood or womanhood. That is why every explanation given of WHY a male "can't be a man, but is instead woman" etc. relies upon listing stereotypical stuff, or, in some cases is completely abstract and refuses to actually provide any explanation of what they mean, simply stating they "know" that what they feel means what they say it does, even though they can't actually provide a definition of it. "It's hard to explain but I know I'm right" is an attitude one constantly comes up against - a religious faith in something they can't define.
This idea that the terms "man" and "woman" carry all this baggage, sexist stereotypes, that people need to live up to or feel comfortable with is a complete fabrication coming from the "trans" side. You lot want a term to reflect aspects of your personality as well, you want to create more boxes to put people in, as you won't accept simply just being a man or a woman based on being born male or female (and reaching adulthood, obviously people are boys and girls before becoming men or women), but believe you need this "freedom of expression" to broadcast what sexist stereotypes you feel more comfortable with - thinking the world needs to adopt the sexist view you lot have (you fail to see just how much you have in common with Conservatives).
Replacing objective definitions which are based in physical reality, with entirely subjective metaphysical claims, is not logical in any way, is not morally superior, and is demonstrably harmful, not least to female rights and protections, but also to practically anyone that buys into it as it warps people's perception of the underlying issues. It hinders people in their quest for individuation, creating this false narrative of them becoming more "authentic" when the total opposite is true, they believe they need validation from others in order to be happy etc. instead of being encouraged to find more inner strength and resilience with less reliance on how people see them. I'm so glad someone else recognizes that gender identity is a faith-based belief, therefore gender identity ideology is faith-based and should not be treated as objective reality any more than any other faith-based belief system. And I'm glad someone else is talking about it. These people can't even define 'gender' and 'gender identity' or 'man' and 'woman' in a logical way, yet they will insist a male can be a woman, and that their 'gender identity' should be regarded as fact by others.
And when gender identity ideologues go so far as to claim their dissatisfaction with their healthy body is not the thing that needs to be treated, they don't have a mental or neurological problem, it's their body that should be changed to make it congruent with their 'gender identity' (their immaterial True Self) they are making a mind-body dualist claim. Well you've captured the essence of the problems with gender ideology in modern times. It's really an overplayed hand. There are people with gender dysphoria, who feel uncomfortable in the sex they are. How to best ease that discomfort seems to be what's called medically transitioning (where one sex adopts some of the appearance and other qualities of the other.). But again TRAs overplayed their hand by saying they *have* changed sex (you can't yet), aspects like deadnaming rules are really arbitrary and electively offensive... Even the word 'trans woman' is inaccurate: What they really are is trans feminine, men who wish to be perceived and identify as culturally female, because you *can't* fully transition into a woman, an adult human female, as a male. All of this needs to be ironed out before the trans movement really can expect to achieve its goals of widespread medical availability and employment non-discrimination.
This is ultimately about how people feel. We shouldn’t try and dictate or dismiss how others feel. While it may not be important to some it’s vital for others.
An empathetic approach is a helpful place to start. I don’t understand how trans people feel and I probably never will. But condemnation isn’t ever going to be a good approach.

i feel like we should just remove all gender and sex words/tags and simply use the words "egg maker" and "sperm maker" because the words we used to use that signify those roles seems to be losing their meaning. the whole point of calling people males and females was to know these "facts". it never had anything to do with the clothes you wear how you look or how masculine or feminine you feel. if a man can now produce eggs, there is no point of even using the word anymore. that isnt hating on anyone thats just a fact. we use words to organize ourselves so we can make assumptions about the world around us so we can exist with less friction and thus be happier. destroying the ability for people to quickly organize the reality around them is just going to lead to more chaos in a world where people are already on edge and depressed beyond belief. imagine you walk in the room. your an egg maker and your looking for sperm makers because your seeking a mate. you cant talk to everyone so you avoid all the people you assume make eggs because you are not looking for egg makers, you already make eggs, you need someone who can fertilize yours. how does this help all the sperm makers who get passed over because the egg makers didnt know they made sperm? and vise versa? and then imagine that those people become offended because everyone is assuming things about them that are not true? this creates chaos.
Weslee , the best thing to do is have gender neutral names . Most people in southern africa have gender neutral names .
