Julian broke free from the strokes to try and really bring out the music in his head. It seems that the rest of the band just needed to realize his absence to let him break through that boundary that was holding them back.
I think they all needed to break free from the band. Each member made great solo stuff in between comedown machine and new abnormal. It took time apart to bring them closer together again.
