Demonstrating Ace's guitar part to Got to Choose. I'm a KISS Tribute/Ace Frehley tribute guy. Find me on facebook: Matt Schroeder/Space Ace Matt. / spaceace.matt
Isn’t it amazing how 40 plus years later guitarists are posting videos of these classic KISS songs. One can search for any song on TH-cam and find dozens of videos posted over the past decade or so and every so often comes along a new post by someone so inspired by Ace Frehley. A true testament to the innovative melodic guitar leads of the one and only space Ace. Great stuff. Thanks for the post. Now I’m going to go get my guitar and follow along! 👍🏻😁
Very, very nice job, thanks for posting! Few people seem to be able to nail the nuances of Ace’s incredible vibrato technique- including myself. You nail it AND make it look so easy, sheesh.
Thank you! This is a 1984 Gibson Les Paul Studio. (Note the binding and dot neck). Middle pickup was added and this is actually my smoking guitar. The neck pup swings in. Vintage 70's Super D in the bridge!
What kind of pickup is that in the neck position? ACE had a really unique vibrato that is difficult to emulate as well as his chicken pick pop. (does that make sense?)
This is my smoking guitar, so the neck pickup is a dummy pickup. It swings into the guitar when the smoke rolls out. I think it used to be a DiMarzio Super D.
Thanks Allan, I would say that Paul sometimes plays a different voicing, and sometimes they each play a different note in harmony like the intro. Paul also plays the riff at the beginning. Cheers!
The bridge pup is a vintage Super D, yes. It's the only one that functions in this guitar. The middle is for the Ace look and the neck is a dummy that swings out of the way when it smokes!
Does the pickup have to be a 70's model dimarzio to get Ace's sound? I just put a modern dimarzio super distortion pickup in my guitar and playing ot through a marshall combo amp and I can't get that Kiss alive sound.
Hey Frehley Frehley, I have a new DiMarzio Super D in my 79 Black Custom and it sounds great. Ace's sound evolved over the years and the Alive! sounds is pretty awesome. It was a magic combination of the 1973 Deluxe Les Paul, Super D pup, vintage Marshall amps and of course, Ace! I think a lot of it was the way he holds his pick and his attack on the strings. Keep experimenting!
It's a 1984 Gibson Les Paul Studio. At that point in production they had binding and dot inlays. I had the third pickup added. The neck pickup is a fake and this is also my "Smoking Guitar" for KISS Tribute shows. Cheers!
@@echowoodmusic you even have the Milk Bottle Tuners. This video helped me tremendously with the solo, thanks dude. I just uploaded my version if you want to see it.
@@echowoodmusic I'll be honest, I can't hear on my phone speakers, but if your not playing A B C on that part, then you aren't playing it right. I just watched paul play it on two different videos and he definitely plays the open A and not Bb on that part.
I propose to anyone that the solo in this Alive recording of Got to Choose is one of the greatest solos of all time. It just fits and is so 70s.
Agreed!
My favorite solo by ACE! This solo is very melodic and rhythmic and just FITS the tune perfect like a glove!
Definitely one of my all time favorites right there.
So simple, yet says so much in building a good KISS tune.

Thank you, Steven!
That solo still gives me chills and you nailed it
Thank you! This is the very first solo I every tried to figure out from Ace. Also off my first KISS album, HTH. Epic, solo, I agree!
Amazing playing and this guitar is gorgeous. Please, what is the model and the year for this LP?
Thank you! This is a 1984 Gibson Les Paul Studio. (Note the binding and dot neck). Middle pickup was added and this is actually my smoking guitar. The neck pup swings in. Vintage 70's Super D in the bridge!
Imagine you're driving in your car....and you look in your rear view mirror....and you see _THAT SOLO_ coming at you!! ...WHAT WOULD YOU DO?!?! 😮
One of my favorite solos to play Matt!
Cool!!!!!!
Couldn't be any better Matt!

Thanks, Kevin!

You're welcome!
NICE
Thank you!
Sounds great love this song
Is Paul playing the same rift?
Thanks Allan, I would say that Paul sometimes plays a different voicing, and sometimes they each play a different note in harmony like the intro. Paul also plays the riff at the beginning. Cheers!
If your taking requests perhaps Firehouse? 😆
It's in the works! Thanks!
Are your pickups dimarzio super distortions?

ace and peter frampton play very similar.
i’ve always thought this solo, pretty.

What are your amp settings for this video or are you using plugins?
This is a Marshall TSL 100 Gain is probably at 6 or 7, lead channel, I don't recall the EQ.
The solos on hotter than hell are among his very best it not THE best of his career!
Sounds just like ace
Thanks, Ron!
What gauge strings are u using?
10-52 on this one, 10-46 on the Black Custom.
nice job but it is not Bb B C it is A B C on the verse
I'm playing it correctly. Listen closer. Glad you like it.

@@spaceavenger54 thank man, I did the same thing. It is A B C not Bb A B C
The Kiss backing is toooooo loud. Cut it down,… so we can evaluate your playing, prominently.
Almost.
There are a few other subtleties, but most prominently, you missed the slide up the neck/vibrato part at :55
Awesome!
Thank you!
