I saw this in theaters with my brother and sister a week after it's release and it blew me away!
I saw the trailer for this when my Mum and Dad took me to see Twister. I was absolutely awe struck. Then, like you say, was blown away when we went to see at the cinema. One of my favourite films when growing up - watched it on VHS about 500 times.
And deserved too. The destruction scene is still unparalleled in my opinion. Just a gorgeously terrifying display of the antagonist's power.
It beat Dragonheart, which made me very sad.

Everyone always reacts to the alien in Area 51 with "How can he attack when they just cut him open?". They didn't cut the alien open, they cut his space suit.
Yeah, they clearly say its a bio-suit, but 99% of people seem to miss that detail.

it is frustrating, when people miss details like this; but, to be fair, how many times have we seen the movie? most of us miss some details, the first time we see a movie
@@rrmenton8016That’s the whole point of the suit. It’s not only to protect the rather small alien, but also psychological warfare against their foes. The suit is much larger and the facial region resembles a skull kind of. The end goal is to give their enemies the idea they are much larger than they really are. A very intimidating sight. But despite how bad the sequel is, it felt satisfying seeing the little fucker squirm when forced out of his bio suit.
It's fun seeing Mary get swerved because she went into the movie assuming it was a historical film but got an alien movie instead. 😄
As a Brit, I could definitely point out Belgium on a map. I couldn't necessarily justify why it's there but exist it does!

As an American I am sad to say this country will never have great moments as depicted in this movie because we are so preoccupied with cultures wars and other petty bs.
Also, for those who buy the American exceptionalism propaganda, remember the two industries that made American rich was tobacco and slavery. That was our foundation.
I think what really makes that speech so powerful is that it is NOT targeted solely at Americans, but drives home the point that in a global crisis we realize that we are one species. Country, religion, race, etc don't matter. (OMG, I am channeling John Lennon! :-))

Area 51 absolutely exists. There are plenty of pictures, signage to not enter, et cetera. And people get arrested all the time for going near it. The question is whether or not foreign tech/life exists within its gates.
"The Patriot" would be a good movie to react to for American Independence Day. But this was a great watch!

Some films are subtle, deep and full of meaning, others are a shallow, feel good, message movie. This is one of the latter and that doesn't make it a bad film. I've always enjoyed easy to watch films and this is one of the best in class.
Yea, making the reaction to damage done by the aliens more realistic would have made the movie an extremely Dark film. & some action movies in the 90s generally tried to keep what would normally be an extremely dark & scary situation somewhat upbeat & family friendly- Jurassic park, Armageddon, deep impact
This was definitely a good summer, popcorn movie when it came out. Now I see it as a chauvinistic "America saves the world" thing. It's was before the planes flew into the World Trade Center when we felt more secure and all powerful. It was innocent fun.

Yep, this is a big dumb movie done extremely well.
Bombastic explosions, every main character completes an arc (Casse from loser to savior, President from ineffectual fighter to leading the fight, pilot from wanting to go to space to going to space, environmentalist getting to literally save the planet, etc), and one the best speeches on-screen combine to make what should have been a big nothing into a memorable film.
God this movie was huge when it first came out. The visuals alone were so good. No one had seen anything like it before. To that scale.
The smartest thing you said, "We cannot predict how we would act in this situation." You are right how so many people would say, "well I'd be a hero blah blah blergh 🤢🤮", yet almost EVERY person claiming they would act one way tend to act the exact opposite. I learned this valuable lesson to NEVER claim to know how I would respond to ANY situation I have never before experienced.
When it comes to finding Belgium on the map, it helps that I have always been interested in military history. The fact that in two world wars, Germany invaded Belgium just to get around French defenses is very memorable.

Yes, it may be small but it played a pivotal role (if only as a doormat) in two of the largest wars the US has ever been involved in, so more Americans are aware of where it is than you probably would have guessed.
@@hkpew I think doormat is an unfair description of Belgium in either world war. Do to the difference in size and population, it didn't have much of a chance in resisting Germany. Plus, in both wars, Belgium soldiers fought alongside French and/or British forces after their country's defeat and contributed to the war effort.

It was a good speech, but I still prefer the speech of Theoden in the Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King.

I saw Bill Pullman on stage in London back in 2019. He was excellent. But every so often I'd look up at him and that speech would start playing in my head. . .
In the book, Jasmine survived because of two reasons 1) the maintenance side door closed and, more importantly, 2) there was a water drain vent next to her. As the plasma wave (as explained in the book) went by creating a vacuum, cold air was drawn from underground keeping them cool and supplied with air.
...That explanation is, umm, dodgy. The movie's effects are fine for its time (even prompted colleagues of VFX supervisor Volker Engel to ask him how he did some of it), but I don't know if the novelization of a movie script is anything to go by.

OH YEAH Marijke, This is 'historically accurate' for sure. When George Washington visits Area 51 to see the status of the previous alien aircraft wreckage Oh for sure NBC and BBC were there with full coverage. I love it. Again great reaction.
The joking and cheery sort of vibes the pilots had were probably more of a coping mechanism. Police do it a lot at crime scenes. Helps with the PTSD issues. And Pullman's speech is pretty much top 3 best movie speeches in history.

It sounds like you might have been expecting something a bit more historical. I would suggest looking into John Adams sometime. It's a really great HBO miniseries from 2008 about the founding of the US that pretty much swept the Emmys in its category. It also has some wonderful court drama in the first episode that might interest you. 😊
I tried this one but I couldn't go very far. Same with Spielberg's Lincoln (And I love at least 75% of his movies). For some reason, this part of American History seems extremely boring to me. Or maybe because it seems always told with too muchf deference and doesn't feel very real.
For feature films that happen to be musicals, both Hamilton and 1776 are excellent. I also really like the TV movie The Crossing, about the Crossing of the Delaware River and the Battle of Trenton, starring Jeff Daniels as Washington. (My 6h great grandfather fought at Trenton, amongst others.)
I came here to say exactly this. The John Adams miniseries is a masterpiece.
Personally I'd skip straight to National Treasure 1 & 2 (2004/2007) :p
I'd highly recommend John Adams too. I watched it on HBO and enjoyed it so much I bought the dvd.
Mary, I realize that as a Belgian you may not learn a whole lot of American history in school but this is indeed a historically accurate story of the first Independence Day in the US.
the scene when the boy is in the rv banging on the tv because of poor reception he was trying to watch the movie "the day the earth stood still" a sci-fi film from 1951, in black and white. a true classic. you wouldn't be wasting your time watching that movie. DO NOT watch the remake with keeanu reeves....that absolutely sucked!
Here in the US WW2 is a subject we spend a good amount of time on throughout our school years, so I think you would be surprised at how many Americans can point to Belgium on a map. But then again I might be the surprised one.
Hi Mary. I live in the U.S., and I am a World War 2 history buff, so I can point out Belgium on a map immediately. (I can even point out your tiny neighbor, Luxembourg.) The history that took place in the Ardennes forest and the town of Bastogne are legendary, and I enjoyed your Band of Brothers reactions immensely. I do like watching this movie on the 4th of July, so I thank you for reacting to this movie and giving me the chance to experience a first time watch from an additional perspective. I am very glad you enjoyed the movie, especially that epic speech by the president. That said, I almost died laughing at the clip you threw in afterwards. Looking forward to your next reaction.
So awesome Mary watched this historically accurate movie about how the US achieved independence!!! Equally awesome she recognized Stand With A Fist. Now she has to see Contact, Deep Impact and Armageddon.

What a great reaction, I was laughing the whole time. My grama and I went on opening day. My grama was big on the Bible, especially about the apocalypse. Really blew her mind but she enjoyed it. We got out of the theater and a line of people stretched around the building. It was a great day.
I can find Belgium on a map. Also, this movie is historically accurate. Everything happened exactly the way it did in the film.

I served on submarines in the US Navy. We didn't get many port calls overseas, but we did get to spend 4 or 5 days in Belgium one June in the late 1990's. I really didn't know what to expect, but it turned out to be awesome. We docked in Zeebrugge, visited Bruges, and stayed in a beautiful hotel in historic Antwerp. A beautiful country full of friendly people. If anyone is planning a trip to Europe, Belgium would be at the top of my recommendation list. Keep up the reaction videos, Mari. Looking forward to the next!
I saw this movie on July 4, 1996, the year it came out. In its time, this movie was quite a mind blowing experience.
Good times Mary!!! Fun fact: When the President in the movie takes command of the air strike, he isn't actually changing jobs. The POTUS (President of the United States) is the commander-in-chief of the US Military. The US Constitution was written in an era when having the head of state take direct command of the Army in the field wasn't unusual. Both Charles XII of Sweeden before the birth of the US and Napoleon afterwards did so. George Washington, after being elected President lead the US Army on horseback during the Whiskey Rebellion. Also LBJ was supposedly directing small unit troop movements (at times) from the oval office during the Vietnam War in the 1960's.
Saw this opening weekend at the Jersey shore on vacation when I was ten. Still remember the whole theater reacting to every funny, sad, and cheering moments. And THE SPEECH by Pullman still gives me goosebumps lol. Such a blast to see on 4th of July weekend in 96! The 90s were a great time for legit and cheesy movies 😊🤘
I realize this may sound cheesy and overused, but every time I see this channel I can't help but to think of "In Bruges". It's just a good movie and I'm sure you're tired of hearing it, but Colin Farrell was so entertaining in it.

In Bruges : Mad-Eye Moody calls Voldemort a C*** 6 times to his face! .... One of the greatest scenes in movie history!
There is a somewhat historically accurate film about the 4th of July called "1776". It came out in 1972 and is highly unusual because it is a musical. It deals with the men who signed the Declaration of Independence, their personalities and failings. I am patriotic and watch it every year because it shows that our founding fathers were "great" in their accomplishment, but not gods to be revered. Our failure with slavery is not hidden in the film. It is shown that they tried and failed.
It’s also historically accurate in depicting how awful summer in Philadelphia is.

Nothing’s ever solved in
Foul, fetid, fuming, foggy, filthy Philadelphia!”
But seriously, “Molasses to Rum” is one of the greatest “villain songs” to ever appear on Broadway - in large part because it’s supposed to hit hard with the Northern delegates in Congress. They may have pointed the finger at the South on slavery, but their own hands were not clean in the least.
I love 1776. This is definitely a go-to if you want something sort of historical. (It even uses a lot of actual passages from John Adams's letters.)

I doubt many of the Founding Fathers were that good at singing, but other than that, pretty accurate.

So glad you were able to get into it and have fun with this one, it's one of my favorite "popcorn flicks" from my childhood. I still love the design of the alien ships, the explosions and the aliens themselves, they scared the crap out of me as a kid lol. Glad to see the effects still hold up well. You should check out the behind the scenes shots on how they filmed the explosions with miniatures and real fire, its very cool.
This movie is still super cheesy, and in my mind, is simultaneously both the most 90s movie and the most American movie ever made, but its still super entertaining. Enjoyed your reaction!

Released in 1996, at the height of Will Smiths box office career and Ronald Emmerich directing. This is one of those Major Summer popcorn movies released at the time. The director is known for his Big budget "disaster " movies. Not to be taken seriously but a great adventure disaster movie. That speech towards the end, cherry on top.
Had my first big laugh 1 minute into your intro when you said you weren't sure how historically accurate it is.
I'm afraid to tell you that they took some liberties with the story. For example, during the real life alien invasion, the character Jeff Goldblum plays represents an amalgamation of several different people. Sort of like Jeff Goldblum himself.
And to defeat the aliens in real life they didn't use a virus. They just signed the Mothership up to a rewards card and the spam that followed crashed every system on the ship.

ok, like SO many others have commented, the 'historical accuracy' party of this reaction absolutely cracked me the FUCK up! I laughed about that the WHOLE video. I had intended to do the watch along on patreon but my cash got messed up this month so my donations didn't go through. They will be back to normal next month, come hell or high water. "Area 51" is a military installation in the Nevada desert. It has long airstrips and underground/covered hangers. It has been used to test military aircraft in development like the F/A-117 Stealth fighter and the B-2 Stealth bomber. Its remote location and covered facilities make spying on it more difficult, even by satellite. It has also been used to test captured/acquired enemy aircraft during the Cold War. Many believe it is being used to develop the successor to the SR-71 spy plane.
If you want history, watch "The Patriot" and "Glory." Glory is a masterpiece to watch.
Both those options are great. But for me Glory is on a whole different level of great. Glory is an amazing film I love rewatching.

Ive never seen glory, but Ive heard the The Patriot is about as inaccurate as Braveheart. Must be a Mel thing.
@@rrmenton8016 The patriot isn’t horribly inaccurate. It takes bits and pieces of true stories and real people and puts them all together to happen to one person. Not real but not exactly made up either.
The president's speech before the battle is still one of the most epic moments. I still get goosebumps every time I watch it. Great reaction.
So many times I just wish I could have looked over to you during the viewing and just quietly said, "Mary, this is not a good movie. But it is a movie that a lot of people like." I think that would have cleared up most of the confusion.
Since a movie is designed to entertain and "a lot of people like" it, then it achieved it's goal, thus making it a good movie.
I wish I could have leaned over and said, "This is not a good comment. The commenter thinks it makes him sound intelligent and elitist, but it just makes him sound douchey."

It’s the place the French and Brits went to while the German army cut through the Ardennes in WWII.
I saw this at the cinema when it was first released in the UK & even then it was classed more as a comedy.
MY favourite chic flick (only I think that way, every 1 else calls it a horror) is Brandon Lee’s The Crow. The Crow makes me cry for 3 reasons; the beautiful love story, what happened to Brandon Lee during the making & the number it must have done on Michael Massee’s mental health.

I love when people go into watching Independence Day thinking its going to be a historical movie, and you might not have noticed but the guy who shot the can in the hanger scene was Jane from Firefly (Adam Baldwin), he is very young in this one.

This American knows where Belgium is! I visited there when visiting a friend in The Netherlands. Ghent became my favorite city, it's spectacularly Gothic.
A good compare and contrast movie is Mars Attacks! Which came out the same year and has a similar plot, but is much funnier.

I had a family member who was an amazing man who worked for NATO and was stationed in Belgium. Everyone who knew him was blown away by his character, strength, and compassion. Everyone who knew him was improved because they knew him.
He wasn't an American, like me, but independence is the dream of every person. Not just Americans. It's the ubiquitous dream of liberty and justice for all.
He has passed away but many of us, in our small family, still remember him fondly.
So yeah, I can find Belgium on a map.
This movie is equal parts “cheesy” and “awesome.”
I could point out Belgium, but then again, I was stationed at Florennes in 1986-1987. Loved the country, the people, and the pommes frites!!!

When this movie was released, Area 51 was still a super-secret facility, in fact, it was the single most secret facility the US had since the Manhattan project. It was the only location that Astronauts were specifically told not to photograph (though, apparently, they did by accident). It wasn't declassified until 2013, however it had been well known to exist for quite some time before that. The Apple Newton (a touch screen, handheld personal computer released in 1992) contained an easter egg of Area 51's coordinates down to the arcsecond in its map app (though I'm pretty sure it wasn't searchable, you had to already know the approximate location to tap, near Las Vegas, and doing so would change a few icons in other apps to be alien-themed).
But Area 51 was very popular way back since the '80s.

There's a series on TH-cam called OverSimplified that gives a great explanation about the American Revolution. The movie that would give the best reaction about it would probably be The Patriot with Mel Gibson.
This film might be cheesy as hell and dumb as a rock but it easily remains one of my favorite action movies. Glad you enjoyed it.

American action movies from the 90s pretty much all had this kind of vibe. Undeniably dumb and cheesy, but a lot more fun than the gritty realism that we mostly get these days.

Hi, Mary! Not only can I point out Belgium on a map but I've been there. In 2016 my daughter, who was living in Germany at the time, bought tickets to a Band of Brothers actors reunion in Bastogne. They have an Italian restaurant there that serves a delicious pizza Bologanese.
I'm a U.S. native... but I visited Belgium (back in late-1999/early-2000). Brussels was gorgeous. 🇧🇪 I couldn't celebrate "independence" this year since half our states recently restricted bodily autonomy for those with ovaries. I hope enough of our fair-minded citizens will get off their rumps on Election Day. #VoteBlue 🗳️ As for this movie, I enjoyed it very much back in 1996 (Mr. Smith's recent unfortunate violent display, notwithstanding). 🛸 Thanks, as always, Mary!
Of course I know Belguim the capital is named after a sprout! I know most of Europe ....but when we get to the Balkans things get fuzzy I know the names but putting them on a map is a different matter.
I know exactly where Belgium is on the map because we talk about it while studying history we reference the Maginot Line.

This movie practically invented the summer blockbuster. It was the first movie I ever saw twice in the theaters. We drove 3 hours into another state for the second showing.
