As someone living in Japan, can confirm-cookies are a tragic loss in the crossfire. For all the baked goods this country loves, old-fashioned home-baked cookies are not one of the mainstream ones.
This is nuts, I had no idea. I watched this several times trying to figure out what was special about this cookie because it looked pretty mediocre tbh. None of the techniques to keep the chips from sinking were employed, and the dough spread out a LOT so it doesn't look like it was chilled.
@@oedalisI much prefer Japanese cookies though… not every place needs other things other places have. There are so many things that exit in one place but don’t in others. Cookies still exist in Japan and in many forms, maybe not as prevalent as US but does it need to be when there are million different sweets exist in Japan that don’t in the US.

i'm sure this logic is how you found it, but maybe narrow the search to 7/11s around airports? most cookie consumers come from the opposite hemisphere, so expats looking for a taste of home would probably be pretty easy to capitalize on around an airport.

@@ohredhk yeah, American style cookies like chocolate chip cookies are rare in Asia. I live in NE Asia, and if I fancy some American cookies, the easiest access to them is Subway. I guess it’s because American cookies are considered rather sweet (or too sweet) to most of Asians. As for pepperidge farm cookies, the only one I think it’s ‘rather sweet’ not BLOODY HELL THIS IS TOO SWEET is chessmen (but I still need to neutralize the sweetness with sugar-free tea or coffee, but hey the buttery flavor is scrumptious)

So it's estimated that there's about 20,000 7-11 in Japan in total (probably more) and he said only about 50 of them are probably selling cookies. Doing that math if you entered a random 7-11 in Japan you would have a 0.25% chance of finding one that sells fresh baked cookies in it. This truly is a rare find and worth the hype. I wonder why so few are selling them?

I appreciate the realness of this channel. A lot of channels present japan as this food paradise where everything is tastier and cheaper all the time, and maybe that's true sometimes, but japan is still like any country, better in some places and worse in others. Awesome vids

Looks like the Pillsbury ready to bake cookie dough, it's either that, or a Japanese equivalent; you can tell by the texture, evenness of colour/how it flattens out in the heat and burns somewhat at the ends. Cheap ingredients.
Aw man when I went to Japan (I think I was near Mount Fuji at the time, if I recall correctly), I’m pretty sure I saw those there, but I didn’t get one because I’m not a fan of cookies. I just got a crepe cake and chocolate-filled mochi taiyaki instead.

Dang you got the fresh fresh. Our 7-Eleven in the states just packs them in a box and they are at the register. However you can get them fresh and warm if you wander in early in the AM 3-5 😅
Huh. I was stationed in Japan for three years and im just now realizing i never saw a soft baked cookie. But they had so many other goodies that are hard to find here that i hardly missed them. Generally speak, i did notice that all the 7-Elevens in Yokosuka all carried slightly different merch. There was one out of the three that had this incredible sugar spread that you vould put on toast, for example.

The way that cookie pulled apart makes me think they use at least some rice flour in their batter. Could also help explain the extra chewiness as there didn't seem to be any oatmeal.
In Hawai'i, not sure about Mainland USA, the Subway's here has the exact same kind of big chewy cookies with a thin crispy shell. They're a regular menu item, so ALL Subway's have them …unless they've ran out and it's close to closing time. 😱

My guess is that they are mostly in a countryside where the store is not too busy. It would be too time consuming in central tokyo
