My recovery tools: 1. Spikey ball for foot. I find the spike ball better than a flat lacrosse ball as it really breaks up any adhesions. The stiff lacrosse ball, if anything, hurts my plantar more. 2. Foam roller (non-vibrating). I have a flat one and a harder trigger point one which I'll use at different stages. After a hard run, the softer, flatter one, then the trigger point a few days later to break up any adhesions or sticky fascia. Would like to try the vibrating one. 3. Myo Master massage gun (currently £199 with a free charger worth £49) - cheaper than a Theragun and has the highest RPM on the market (up to 3200RPM). It's pretty quite and easy to handle too. 4. Lacrosse/trigger point ball for glutes mainly 5. Magnesium bath or spray 6. HOKA Bondi trainers for after a race. I tried the Ora slides, but the arch was too high and triggered my PF. The 2's might be better though, so would be great to find out from you Anna if the arches are high on the Ora 2's? 7. Glass of wine or pint of beer ;)
I have a Power Plate Dualsphere vibration roller - smaller than a foam roller but just as effective. I’ve even used it for my foot and have almost fallen asleep on it when using it on my upper back 😀
I absolutely swear by calf compression sleeves. I usually wear them during my long runs and around the house when my legs are tired or if I have a little tweak in my calf. I also swear by foam rolling and a spiky foot roller that helps prevent plantar fasciitis. Without these products there is no way I'd be able to maintain high milage. I think my next investment is going to be a message gun, but the good ones are super spendy. Are there significant differences between the $100-$150 message guns compared with the $300, $400, or even $600 dollar ones? I'd love to hear peoples opinions or see a comparison video. Anyway, thanks for another great vid. Keep doing what you do.
Sleep is the most important for sure, but also hydration and not just sitting still afterwards. I need to work on post run discipline and actually stretch and do more rolling!
I have been using the R8 roll recovery, the grid and rumble roller. I genuinely considered the Theragun but for me it's too pricey and I honestly couldn't find a legit reviews on social media without any childish/crude comments. Thanks gang and stay safe!
Foam roller before and after a run. The best thing ever. The small knobbly ball is heaven for my feet. I have it under my desk so I can roll my feet throughout the day. The small joys of wfh.
My tool of choice is a Thumper VMTXVerve. Similar in principle to the Theragun but a fraction of the price. My osteopath brought this gadget to my attention and it's just brilliant if you feel a bit bashed after a heavy weights session or to sooth muscles after a long run. There are reviews on YT. A never buy Epsom salts from a chemist, way too expensive for the quantity you get, a 1 or 2kg bag is ridiculous considering you need 2 mugfuls of salt in a bath. It also leaves your skin lovely and soft. I like to add a few drops of nice essential oil like lavender, lovely! I buy pharmaceutical/ food grade Epsom salts by the 10kg bucket at less than £15 from a well known online retailer ; )
Recovering from calf tear so this video has good timing. I have been using the massage stick, the spiky ball and the Hoka slides all good stuff. The spiky ball is the easiest to get a cross fiber massage on the calf and dig into the torn spot. Gotta heal this properly or unfortunately this injury has a habbit of recurring. Good video.
I watch this channel so much I think the UK accent may be rubbing off on me. I don't mind if it does, haha! Anyway, it wasn't until I ran my first 13 miles that I considered how to recover. At first, I was always about getting a banana, protein bar, and electrolytes immediately after a long run because I learned that life sucks if I don't do this right away. Now in terms of muscles, I carry one of those inexpensive foam rollers and it's made a difference for me. But I'm just trying to learn other ways, so I'm thankful for the video.
Aditya Chavan Foam rollers are great and inexpensive recovery tools for runners. I use mine to mash out my hip flexors and relieve tension in my lower and upper back.
Great work Anna! My wife and I loved the Theragun and have been looking at a similar product available at our local running shop. Also the clock looked awesome. I use a white noise machine at night (I've always been a weird sleeper since military service) and it's cool that it integrates that into the machine. Also no obnoxious noise first thing. Thanks!
If it's available where you are try Tailwind. I've always used electrolyte tabs too and recently used Tailwind for the first time on a recommendation from my local running shop. It's great as a recovery drink and tastes good.
@@kevinlance1813 I shall keep an eye out for those and give them a try. Currently i use SIS hydro tablets. The taste is, shall i say... not unpleasant, but they work wonders on a long run day.
Love my Compresport compression calf sleeves. Use them every now and then after a harder long run or on long haul flights (back when that was a thing!). Occasionally used Epsom salts as well but we moved recently and the new place doesn't have a bath so not really an option right now! But nothing beats a good night's sleep for recovery, or a nice long siesta after a harder effort.
I have a pain in my right calf after weeks of running in preparation for my first half marathon. I dont want to run again till the pain is gone completely. Can i exercise on the rowing machine in the meanwhile as i dont want to exert a lot of force on my calves but want to improve my breathing and fitness ?
Foam roller and a spikey ball is pretty much all I use. Maybe soaking my legs in a cold pool if I'm really sore. Btw, love the Charlies Angels reference 😀
I only normally recover after a run of 10 miles or longer and this would involve some stretching and a 10 minute session on the foam roller. I do some stretches on smaller runs but don’t bother with a foam roller. I love the looks for the Theragun but for £500, no thanks. My sports massages are only £15 for a 30 minute session and I normally only get one after a race of 10 miles or more
We (myself and my wife) did a blind trial of epsom salts in a bath. She would put either epsom salts or something else in the bath and dissolve it, and then I'd get in and we'd review how my legs felt the next day. We did this after longer runs for about a month. The epsom salts certainly had an effect early on in the test block, but not so much later on. But that may be because my body was getting used to the extra mileage, so my legs weren't as sore. I think however there may be quite a bit of placebo going on. That being said, placebo or not - if your legs feel better afterwards that's what counts. And lounging in a nice hot bath is never a bad thing ;-)
Hey, can you guys from the running make a video about minimum, recommend and best age to run? I'm interested on what age you body is ready to run long(er) distance.
I never get the compression recovery stuff... I hurt more when I wear tight stuff...maybe I need larger versions than the usual sizing I have... i dunno 🤷♂️
Did that vibrating foamroller make Anna smile even more... ? I get it :-) Personally I do self-massage of my legs right after the run and the next day. (After Ultras, even more days) I have problematic achilles-tendons and it seems to help a lot if I massage my calf often.
“We aren’t getting paid for showing these” shame a lot of other channels get money to promote items with a lot less and not as good content that you offer, get them told 😀 they are still getting ad revenue through your channel
What’s your go to product when it comes to recovery? Is there something you always use that we didn’t mention? Let us know in the comments below!

Oofos make great recovery slides too, we love ours.

I love them all🙂 especially Andy because he is always thinking of ways to cheat😂😂😂 I think he calls it using his brains

After a sunday long run 10 mins standing in the cold irish sea at the slipway near where I live feels amazing.

Thanks for sharing! And great video suggestion 😊
The best recovery product is a nice dark room set at 20°c, a soft bed, goose feather pillows and a nice silk blanket...😊
I'm not even tired and I immediately want to teleport there

Have to agree with Anna I love a Epsom salt bath 🛁 so relaxing after a hard training session 👍🏻
I have used calf sleeves during and after runs and they seem to help my recovery. Or maybe it's just in my mind. Great video, Anna!

Haha we are mind readers it seems!
Aditya Chavan Foam rollers are great and inexpensive recovery tools for runners. I use mine to mash out my hip flexors and relieve tension in my lower and upper back.
Like the sound of the vibrating roller so ordered one.
Nice!
Great video! A cheaper option for a vibrating foam roller is the one from argos for £40. it is amazing!
Thanks for the tip Joshua!
The runner products really are brilliant. I can remember my dad who was a runner thought a tin of Fiery Jack was high tech!!! Nice video Anna.
Thanks Gary!
Epsom salt! Love it. Hot tub too when I can get one. Thanks Anna. You are always the best.

Re-hydrating with an electrolyte tablet in a large glass of chilled water is my top recovery tip to avoid those post run headaches

I've been running with my calf sleeves. Is that wrong or weird?
@@kevinlance1813 Not something I do but I have seen other runners like Sage run in them so probably not wrong. Maybe a little weird though :)

I use Compressive legs socks. Made by kiprun. Makes me feel better and my light shin splint does not hurt.
Hey Great Video how do you prevent chafing or get rid thx
Bodyglide is great for chaffing (or similar products) 😊
Weekends Hot bath, great nourishing food, warm bed, good book, relaxing sleep get up run and repeat 😊💕 then back to the grind lol

Hi, thanks for this video. Is it possible to show the massage gun usage for pre and post runs please. Thanks.
Would you like a video about this?
@@runningchannel YES!! Theres no content available atm anywhere, also the massage heads are quite confusing. Thanks for replying, you made my day! 💐
Great video, our go to is the standard foam roller, but we are super interested to try out the Pulse Roll and the TheraGun Pro!

Which Ultrathon is Anna running in? I have my 1st Ultrathon in October and I love watching your videos xx
Anna is doing the UltraX 125km run in the Peak district this weekend 😊 Best of luck for your ultra!

Thanks for not using a thumbnail with a childish shocked face

Charlie’s Angels!
@@MrHepcat34 yes! 🥳
Placebo or not I love compression esp after squats on a heavy leg day or a run after a few days off.
Nice!
I never get the compression recovery stuff... I hurt more when I wear tight stuff...maybe I need larger versions than the usual sizing I have... i dunno 🤷♂️
Might be worth trying a different size, everyone has different preferences in terms of recovery though 😊
The vibrating foam roller looks good, if a bit noisy LOL.
Thanks for watching Samantha 😊
Am I the only one one who gets into a long cold shower or ice bath afterwards? Seems to help my old legs.
I'm using ice more and more. At this point I'm open to anything that keeps my old legs going.
Nope ice baths are great! Some olympians get into dustbins filled with ice after training haha!
I think I nearly died just getting into a cold water bath even without ice!
Everyone should have a pair of Birkenstock sandals. I don't know where I'd be without mine.
Great suggestion, thanks Andrew!
Did that vibrating foamroller make Anna smile even more... ?
I get it :-)
Personally I do self-massage of my legs right after the run and the next day.
(After Ultras, even more days)
I have problematic achilles-tendons and it seems to help a lot if I massage my calf often.
