Very useful baggy loose trousers. Allows freedom of your sword down there. But also very slim fit on ankles to allow movement.

@ Sir, I don't quite understand the last strike of the defensive side shown in Windhau. What do we gain with it? Is it simply to bash the opponent's blade from the middle/common ground?
@@HanSolo__ I believe it is because they are not meant to be lethal strikes so the final hit is to remove the threat of the blade windhau does mean wound strike

I just got of sparring a few hours back and noticed how I had a problem with following up with different attacks. This video really helped me see on the ways I could continue with the tempo rather than resetting with just one strike. Thank you

My favorite strike has always been and continues to be Zornhau (wrath strike). I love that it's one big aggressive strike (easily the most barbaric of the strikes) that is made relevant through footwork.
Edit: I would say it's best used as an aggressive means of claiming space however, I believe it's fun but most effective as a mechanic or a technical element to a duel.
The one thing I would have loved is to have the person throwing the named strike always be on the same side, or at least have a distinctive color. Several times I got confused as to who was doing the strike and who was defending.
Im always fascinated in medieval sword fighting especially with a longsword, Their seems to be a lot of wraist actions when it comes to counters,
This is actually really good to get insight on, it would take so much strength and control, especially when one takes the winning position needing to hold their arm back with fast control not to hit the other.

I primarily study Fiorre but I happen to figure out the Glützhau when trying to figure out how to strike best from the lower rear guard. I was really surprised I'd never thought of it before as the advantage of having a double edged weapon

Cause it means strike and the first part is adjective, so for example "oberhau" is "upper strike" and "zornhau" is "wrath strike" ;) .

Well if you know german, you already have a vague idea what the technique might look like from the name alone ^^ Kronehau for example, the most I like Schielhau because you have to "schiel" (being cross-eyed) to see the tip of the blade ^^

On the Schielhau I would just like to mention that a short edge cut should not be your main plan but a feint or building up for your next cut, you just can't have as much force and it's slower and can be blocked easier then if you were to just use an oberhaw
I dosnt agree with your experience. A Schieler is a very nice first-intention-to-hit cut. The mechanic and the alignment are superior in comp. to a normal Oberhau. It is done with less force, sure. But the Schieler catch the Oberhau without any effort.

I rarely ever see anyone take that far back of a guard for a Zornhau. I'd imagine it adds a little extra oomf.
The zornhau can be performed from a regular Vom Tag position, but here he's using the guard described by Meyer (and possibly other masters) as Zornhut, the wrath guard.
It does add some strength to the strike but you need to be 100% sure of your timing to start your zornhau from this guard :)
There is a similar guard in italian longsword treatises but i have forgotten its name

Is the main difference between the schielhau and zwirch the angle at which the cut come in? From what I can tell, schielhau ends with a downwards cut to the head with the false edge and zwirch ends with a horizontal cut to the head, but there are not other differences between the two cuts. Am I reading this right?
I know this is late, but the Schielhau is designed to kind of get around Fuhlen. Basically you through like you are throwing a proper Zornhau, meet in the bind with their Zorn, and a brief moment later you roll into the schiel. Basically it takes advantage of people who don't have good sensitivity and are just trying to cave your skull in.

For some of the strikes for sure...but for some not. These techniques are made for Blossfechten...without armor - judicial fights. For the gambeson guy just deliver a Zorn, Zwirch or good old upper strike...etc.
This is a great video but I couldnt help but notice that the guy getting killed is always starting in the same guard and always throwing downward cuts.... What woould happen if he threw a different cut, or if he used a different guard? Could you still use these techniques, or are these specifically designed to counter the downward cuts? I have zero knowledge of hema I just like watchin videos like this so I am curious...

Sehr schön! Hat man bei einem Schwertkampf den Gegner eher verprügelt mit dem Schwert oder noch geschnitten? Schade das in Europa diese Art des Schwertkampfes nicht stärker gepflegt wird, schon rein aus kulturellen Gründen, es wäre doch auch eine interessante Sportart.
Moin Andreas! Da es eine vollumfängliche Kampfkunst ist findest Du alles, von Entwaffnung, über Kampfunfähigkeit bis zu tödlichen Techniken. Eine Sportart ist es übrigens bereits. Alles unter dem Schirm von HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). Ob es einen Club in Deiner Nähe gibt findest Du auf der Seites des deutschen Dachverbandes (ddhf.de).
Can you explain the difference between a shielhau and a krumphau?
A schielhauw is when you do a high cut at their head but turn your hilt mid-stroke to hit them with the short edge. A Krumphauw is when you arc the blade in front of you in a windshield wiper motion.
Durandalite So the krumphau doesn't hit the opponent? Based off your description and what I see in the video the krumphau hits the sword then immediately follows up with a shielhau?
Then the very next video is only a single shielhau without a krumphau preceding it?
Durandalite Many thanks for the info! One last question. Can you direct me to any videos of a krumphau hitting the opponent in the head in a demo (or preferably in a sparring scenario)? I can't recall having seen any.
Can't think of any off the top of my head but if I find one I'll let you know.

Looks like against long sword its best to have a active defense instead of doing a static block
The only static blocks in Longsword are ones done in desperation. Winding, binding, redirecting and riposting are the norm.
Is Mittelhau a strike to the head or the arm?
mostly head...but to be precisely the cut goes trough the zwerch-line. This line is in height between shoulder and chin.

I use the common sources. I recommend Forgengs book "The art of combat". If you want to have a closer look at the cuts you can view all of those in my channel, also with references to the book (page etc...)

grutzhau, kniechelhau, Kruzhau, windhau, and prellhau don't look familiar at all. (although prellhau does resemble a more exaggerated zwerchhua.) I study his 1570 treatise. but I'll look into forgengs art of combat. mostly is use the wiktenauer, since it's a free resource and I don't speak middle-high german.
I have not seen a Prellhau before, in your demonstration it appears to strike with the flat of the blade. What is the thought behind striking with the flat? (Of course, getting smacked in the ear with the flat on an unarmored head would hurt like hell...)
Flat strikes can flick around a parry. Thats a nice effect. Another reason could be the different city laws in medieval/renaissance time. Its like today...when you kill some one you get into the jail :)
...and it is a nice solution to sparr with brother in arms without harming them. A martial art system includes not only deadly techniques.

@ I have a doubt, i have examined the Overhau Unterhau combination and compared it to the Kniechelhau technique, and they allmost look the same. I think i might be doing something wrong.
@@omari2306 A Kniechelhau is a disarming cut to the wrist. And Unterhau is a cut to anywhere on the upper body. Sometimes it's enough to merely maim an enemy, rather than kill him.

I find this to be a little confusing. If the initial parry is part of the move, why does the second person freeze in place, after his stab, and allow the first guy to take all the time he needs, to riposte? I'd think those techniques would be sorta useless, if that was so, because no one is just going to stand there, and take it, right? Or am I just missing the point of the video? I do not exclude that possibility at all.
Good Question. The whole channel is created to show our interpretations about Meyers book of martial arts. The video is to showcase the concepts of the different strikes. Thats the focus. Its like in the Dojo when the master shows a technique on a trainee. It would be very disturbing if the trainee constantly interruped the trainer with counter moves etc.
In real life the other fencer could parry a strike for sure and than the initial guy goes into another blow and so on. Or the second guy wins the initiative and goes for the opening. Thats just fencing. But to show a single technique you need a focus and not a endless loop of combinations with a couple of Options and counters.

The Red Gamer Simple answer. Its called training. Every martial artist knows you first have to learn the technices and drills. For example it doesnt make sense if you want to teach someone to fight to put some on his first day into an MMA tournament. You have to learn the basics and with further Progress your Partner than reacts with simple counters and than further on. Simply doing it Step by step. But it all Starts with the Basic techniques. Just Look at Katas in all other martial arts.

This is a demonstration of technique if you wish to see it in action at full-time I suggest watching either a sparring match or a tournament.

Grosse Schlachtschwerter wurde vor allem in einem anderen Kontext genutzt und weniger für Zweikämpfe. Es gibt ein paar überlieferte Quellen aus dem iberischen Raum. Dort wird vor allem der Kampf gegen Überzahl thematisiert. Manche Häue, um Deine Frage zu beantorten, in diesem Video wären mit einem solch grossen Schwert gut durchführbar (Zornhau, Mittelhau zB), die meißten allerdings nicht.

@@estrianemperor Im Kriegseinsatz waren Schlachtschwertführer echte Spezialkräfte. Das ist richtig. Kanonaden und Stellungen bewachen oder auch Formationen aufbrechen. Leider gibt es zum militärischen Einsatz kaum Quellgrundlage.
Nice! I am a noob - it looks to me that some strikes are not hard enough to be killing or fightstopping blows 🤷♂️ are they more for first-blood kind of duels perhaps?
Not all techniques in martial arts are lethal. Some strikes use the opportunity to hit or counter other techniques even if it doesn't always end fatally.
Long swords were really, really sharp (check for videos with long sword cutting tests). Therefore most of the hits would be sufficient to incapacitate the enemy. Also most of the techniques shown here are actually aimed at the head and easily deadly. There are some that specifically target the arms (such as the knichelhau), but i doubt anyone would continue to fight without arms.
What does master strike means?
The 5 master strikes are the best conceptional way to come into all the main handworks (middle-work techniques in thight and close distance). That doesnt mean your are a master when you can do these strikes. In the past it was a secret between masters to teach these strikes to their scholars. It was a good way to learn about the concepts in swordfighting.

No, this is not true.
You attack where your enemy cannot defend. This is the way to ensure your attack does not fail. That is why it is said to defend one only needs to be strong, but to attack this is not enough. To attack one must be fast.

Do you know that most of those advanced fencing techniques were performed clearly wrong? Besides the fact that you SHOULD NOT promote advanced techniques (unless they are performed 100% correctly). There is just no point in this. You could show more basic and more important moves.

omg, how you call this? toyswording? :D none of these are valid "strikes", well, these are not even strikes more of strokes, when the opponent is wearing any kind of armour. even a gambeson can negate all of these while most of these strokes are made up based on single drawings do not show the process, only a stance and builds on the opponent freezing solid after the first move or simply parrying horribly... sometimes when you look at a those pictures be critical and think of the usefulness. If the opponent is in an armour no matter what sharp and pointy real sword you have, he would just stand there not even trying to parry and keep laughing at you...

huhh, somebody got butthurt :D yeah, i have a long term illness since 2008 so you are right, i dont do now anything, prior that i was doing archery fencing and karate, I still have all my stuff and all my knowledge, thats not affected... Your martial art is a crap, when i watch the hema longsword championships i'm thinking if they are just fucking joking and doing it for the show or if they think it actually seriously. These are just demonstrations of different ways to approach an attack on a Longsword. The opponent isn't going to fight back right now as this isn't an official match. It was trying to show the attack, not the precision of defense. The accuracy of the parry wasn't the purpose of the video
