Drove a late 2020 manual 118i m sport today. Opinions:
- well refined, nice ride, very nice quality interior, nice handling
-heavy clutch with low bite - hard to set off smoothly, quite heavy steering, gearbox is a bit “springy”/could be nicer to use. Felt a bit slower/less exciting than I expected. 7/10 from me.
looking at this car in the used market roughly 80,000km. is there any issues with oil leaks like the previous gen?
Many people are put off because it is FWD. But think about it, many people can not afford 4wd, and 4wd causes increased fuel consumption, more components that can break, and increased weight. Rear wheel drive are useless in northen countries, but front wheel drive are quite good on snow because of the engine weight over the front wheels. In many cases for normal driving you do not need 4wd during the winter if you have front wheel drive. Okay, i can agree that front wheel drive cars are "boring" if you want to play around and do drifting, but how often will ordinary people drive like that? Nice car by the way!
The more i search for new bmw cars that im unaware off, the more i get excited by these cars
This car looks good I just wish they kept the old shape of it and a small grill for the rest it’s good
Dedicated climate and media control + non touch-only commanded infotainment are highly appreciated

Love the rear exterior design and the interior. I live in Asia so this is not available in the market, instead it was replaced with 218i as the entry model but i wish this 118i was the entry model. Overall nice and informative review, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

@@sasomusic1108 Mislim, ono, ne bi pogresio ni sam T-Cross, na kraju krajeva on je i dalje pocetnik. Mada kada se T-cross poredi sa ovim, kao da poredis nebo i zemlju. Sigurno nije pogresio sa izborom automobila :)
The FWD layout is all on the Mini platform. The X1 and X2 are on it as well.

It’s funny how different is the reaction to this car in other countries compared to Italy, italians simply say that this car is a big fail and they despise the design and mostly the front-wheel drive, as an Italian and as an owner of the previous model, I’d say that this model is obviously a step forward regarding technology and safety, I still prefer the previous design except for the rear, in terms of driving experience I can’t judge, but I reckon that at least for the smaller engine versions that wouldn’t be that much of a difference.
Well believe me in my country (Croatia) you can also hear a lot of these comments. The thing is - people who talk that probably didn’t even try any of those 2 models so it’s funny. Truth is that the car is great looking, it drives very well and as you said in smaller engine versions you don’t feel the difference, the new one even has much much better driving postition (drove then back to back, this and 2019 model).
So big thumb up for the car from me 😀
Probably to hide that fact that Alfa is long overdue in bringing us a new Giulietta :P
@@crospotter13 novi m135i vozi točno kao golf R. X drive je isti sustav kao u VW grupaciji. Klasični haldex. Prednji pogon sa povremenim zadnjim. Čak su stavili i tipične dimenzije guma za VW grupaciju, 235/40-18 na sva 4 kotača i to na m performance verziji. Bmw nikada nije koristio te dimenzije. Nažalost dizajn je jedno ali vozne karakteristike nisu niti do koljena starom m140ix modelu.
Insane. Did not like the previous 118 and 120 specially coz of the back but now its wow. A true hatch with nice curve.

This black edition is really cool! i really love it!!
Purchased one and i like it ! It has only done 4800 miles but needs new engine mounts ( under warranty ) The car is automatic has been driven very respectfully and i use the stop start , i have been led to believe this has caused the problem ? It's juddering on stopping and starting. Anybody else having problems .
I just bought the 118i M-Sport... just need to wait for the license plates... I'm so hyped about this car!

I've been a VW Golf owner for many years and this is a nice looking car plus its front wheel drive.
i sold my golf, my mk6 (1.4 tsi 122) for this car, 118d pack m (2.0 150hp diesel)
Got mine few days ago, all black with shadow line package, black grill and black rims. Looks and feels amazing!

@@stevem2323 @Steve M My first BMW so I can't really compare with the previous models. All I can say is that the car feels amazing on to road! Definitely no problem regarding front drive.

Mixed feelings about the rear exterior design, but overall it's a beautiful car, especially in person. I have to say, that interior is WAY better than any competition right now, especially the new Golf Gti, which looks terrible inside.
Same goes for A3 also. At first you see some nice proportions but overall A3 is very far away from being aesthetic. It is like a robot with no feelings. Also material quality is dead with the current gen A3. 1 Series kills it simply.
The rear? I think this one (as good as similar to the 2020 model) has a beautiful ass where I have more mixed feelings about the facelift.
The A-Class still has a better interior.

hi there! Interesting video! I just been yesterday at the dealer and tried for the first time 118i model because I want to change my old golf mk5 from 2006. I have to say-this is incredible rocket! Completely different world. Solid interior. Btw guy told me the digital cockpit changed depends begging or late 2020. If he was right...Just a view questions: satnav zooming to show you which lane to drive? indicators flashing like standards or flashing to the sides? I didn't know the led lights are only option. I though is standard. Greetings, Tom.

@@crospotter13 Yea, annoys me a lot :P Probably one thing I'd immediately let someone change (even still under warranty) because it looks a lot better. Would you pick this new 1 series over the new A3 or the new Mazda3 with the 180hp engine?
@@mpc007 that's a tough one. I even think I would. Audi is great overall (better looking interior, also great to drive and looks nice, but BMW exterior is a bit better in my opinion, especially from the rear). The thing is that in Croatia Audi with the spec that I want costs around 50k EUR (check out my full review on the channel - blue one with S Line was awesome and had things that I would spec but price was very high. Speaking of Mazda - drove the Mazda 3 with 120 HP and that one lacks 30 HP. 180 HP one is SkyactivX right? Haven't driven that engine yet so can't tell, but what I can tell is that I like the exterior of Mazda 3, really looks beautiful, but I'm not convinced about interior. Materials are good but theanalog/ digital cockpit looks outdated and the main screen has very small choice of colors/animations, almost like it's black& white one...So would probably choose BMW because it's a bit cheaper than Audi.

120i has two exhausts endings. Only 118i and low end versions have 1.

Acelith - you will love the car, I fell for it too and it gets better the more I drive it, such a great car for being 1.5 3 cylinder, I like the noise it makes too being a 3 pot. I’d love to know what you think after you get it and start clocking up the miles. Very comfy on long drives too.

it's a tough one :)
So BMW is more of a driver's car, feel when you go for more sporty ride is better. But Mercedes has much more advanced infotainment with more options, better voice command, more impressive ambient lights etc.
Speaking about exterior both look good but I prefer BMW's look. In the end I would go for the BMW because of the driving part, but I do think that Mercedes is more advanced car when we speak about tech. So it's a matter of personal taste - what do you want more? :)

No Doubt, I would go for BMW, The interior of the Mercedes is fancier, I drove both... The Mercedes Wheel seems to be too light, I didn't like it at all. I will buy the BMW, I`m just wondering which packages should I buy, I am looking for a 118i and 120i and comparing both and playing with the packages to get not so expensive in the end.
What are the bottom 2 lights below the brake lights on the bumper near the exhaust? Are they real?

Yeah, the real pipe is a bonus. Most hatchbacks now have those godawful fake exhausts.
Yeah man, I always think why Mercedes have to give fake exhausts even to AMG latest models, what will they accomplish by doin that 😂😂
@@scares3859 I'd say most people (non-car people) actually like that type of stuff, and that is what sells. They are doing it in most new models. See the Peugeot 308 - it's a cool looking car overall, but the fake exhausts are even worse than those on the A Class.

The problem is; when you add these options to 1 Series, it surpasses the price limit of 3 Series. I would go for 3 Series and give up some options in return to better chassis and drivetrain.

Had this happen to me at the dealership 318i was 1k more expensive than a 118i m sport but I chose the 1 series after all because the 318 really lacked a lot of features it didn’t even have a digital drivers display and had a small infotainment screen I just couldn’t live with that so I got the 1 series test drove both and found the 118i to be more zippy even tho it has 500cc less

Honestly, what a beautifull and agressive looking spec. Especially from the back end. The black color with those bi-color rims, the only thing it needs is the more sportier rear spoiler.

To get your car looking like that with all the extras it’s gonna cost around £35,000 plus, for a 1 series not worth it.
So is it now a mini cooper in disguise.
Well they had same enignes before, but now it’s a fwd layout also. Personally this one is less hard and also steering is lighter ( I drive a 2019 Cooper), but both drive so good and this is a better daily car as it’s more practical, but Mini has more of a cool factor I would say 😀

It’s the push down using release button on top of the seats, and then you get flat floor and 1200 litres of space.
Some of the features such as electronic tailgate and 12v power outlet on the trunk can be bought as an extras
crospotter13 thanks for the info! I understand that front LED are Available across the range but adaptive LED are indeed an option! This was the only point that for me that conflicts to what I’ve understood after meeting a BMW sales person
@@MrEMIT777 here in my market we have halogen headlights (DRL's are LED standard but main light is halogen), then you get LED lights as option, and option option are adaptive LED's (this car has LED's and full test of the LED's in the dark road coming this week so stay tuned:) )
crospotter13 My one came with the led lights not adaptive though. Led headlights are great, it’s like daylight. I’ll be checking back to see how the adaptive ones are, subscribed by the way.

Realistically it gets 38mpg (7.4l per 100 km). It’s ok but not great

thanks :) Well L shape parts are DRL's, outer lamp is classic light and inner lamps are high beams I would say

It’s the standard front assist & lane assist. Speaking about the high beams - when I turn them on it’s just on/off option, I don’t get the automatic high beams logo on the dashboard (video of the LED lights demonstration during the night will be live next week on the channel so stay tuned 😀), so not sure why that leaver has the automatic high beams logo... 🧐

Well I think the high beam button on the left lever is there because the car is equipped with the hardware of that function but BMW gives you the possibility to buy it online on BMW connected drive via the app in the car infontainment. Looking forward the LED video and thanks again 💪🏻

I got one in February in Misano Blue, it’s a fantastic car, superb handling, great on twisty roads and comfy for long trips.

Great review! Car looks great, but it lost its signature BMW design. You could easily put KIA badge on it and, that's how generic BMW 1 became.

This black m sport looks good with the 19inch wheels but the basic one looks really ugly.
