Just because they don't walk on two legs and use speech to communicate doesn't mean animals aren't intelligent or sentient. In fact in many ways, animals are more moral than humans: at least they don't inflict pain on others for their own pleasure!
Charity to humans is good, yes, but charity to animals is on a whole different and higher level. Humans can at least speak of their sufferings and ask for aid. All animals can do is purposefully approach humans and stare at them mutely, hoping that the humans will discern what help they require and provide it. And those humans who look beyond their own species and provide aid to the rest of the living things on this world are precious in their own right.
And yes, hot weather can have a drastic effect on everything. I know because I do not do well in hot weather: if it goes above a certain temperature I struggle to do my daily tasks, and my health in all areas deteriorates. So it was wonderful to see the ginger family reviving and becoming active in the cooler environment.
