This man is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians ever. Ommadawn, Incantations, and the very Tubular Bells make most brilliant and outstanding masterpieces in the history of music. When I caught Covid last year I had to make plans for my funeral just in case I didn’t pull through and it was touch and go. I told my wife and kids that Tubular Bells had to be played as it has been my absolute favourite music most of my life.
This was in 1992 and Mike Oldfield is still active. Last year he released the album "Return to Ommadawn". The things around Tubular Bells are very interesting but he has done so much beyond that wonderful album. I hope more people will understand that with time. I think most people would discover something they liked if the went beyond "Tubular Bells" and "Moonlight Shadows".
Tubular Bells was the first album I ever heard so I agree with you - literally lol! TBII is my favourite of all time, and I saw him live at the Olympics in 2012. Incredible.
Tubular Bells was written in 1973. That is, as for right now, about 46 years ago. To this day it is the main thing most or all interviewers talk about. Despite the fact he has done 24 albums (or something like that) albums since. I think Tubular Bells is classic and very prolific but the journey through Mike Oldfields music is an interesting one. I have most albums at this point (buy whenever I find one) and do think it is an uneven journey but still SO much good compositions and songs to be found in different styles. Do NOT limit your listen to only Tubular Bells. Instead of just a favorite album I found a favorite artist in Mike Oldfield listening to the other albums!
Wonderful to see him like this, I mean "in live", talking and discussing. So humble and sympathetic. Beside this I´m thinking of all the fantastic music he has made. When I see him I can hear Ommadawn, Platinum, Conflict and all others in my ears. One of the greatest musicians ever. Thank you Mike, for all the music.
Mike is a complicated man, he is unique too. And had a painful childhood for various reasons. I agree with the comments that he is way more than Tubular Bells, and a lot of it is down to lazy journalists, I would love to hear a big in depth interview with him about his life in music, there is so much unsaid about that, he is such a skilled musician, and in my top 3 guitarists.

Very interesting interview! I saw him in LA on this tour in 1992 and it was very exciting to see him and very exciting to see the pipers! I remember wondering how he was going to reproduce the sound of the pipers when out marched a couple dozen pipers! Amazing!
Just a few more weeks and I finally have the same hair style as Mike had then ;) It doesn't suit me, but there it is... But seriously; thank you Mike, your music still does wonders to my mood. You're the best.
He often comes across in interviews as someone very ordinary, but he is far from it, I'm sure he has some kind of autism. He is politically naive and not an intellectual, but he is technically and musically brilliant.
What's strange is that his sister Sally in an interview described him as very extravert and outgoing as a child. He had a lot of friends and was the leader among them. But that was before his mother's illness and the drug use. Either people get the wrong impression of him, or those life events changed him, for a significant period of time, anyway.
Some say, that Joe Satriani and jeff Beck and Gary Moore nd Clapton and Knopfler were the best Guitarists. I would say, thats wrong. Oldfield is better than they all.

I heard he had an autobiography, called "Changeling" or something of the like. I'd love to read it, but I have yet to find it.
