I heard that after catastrophes such as massive famines the population usually grows way faster than during good times. The population of Congo grows, while the population of Europe shrinks, for instance. Additionaly, you have to take into account that a totalitarian dictatorship can only kill a certain percentage of people, which means that some number of people would always be left. If three successing dictatorships would kill 20% of their population respectively, there would be 51,2% left, not 40%, as 80%^3 equals 51,2%.
