Do the crayons smell like regular oil-based things? Thanks!

Super dooper! Instead of using clear acrylic I recommend using a white ceramic plate so you can see the true colors, especially for blending. Plates are inexpensive, reusable and easy to wash, too.

Is it oil based or water based? You used both terms.

Hi Laura! These art crayons are water-soluble, but produce a wonderful oil-painted look. (:

Tim Holtz Distress Crayons (also at Scrapbook.com) work just as well *and* they don’t break.

I bought these to get started with mixed media. I do not find these easy to work with. I have tried and tried different techniques but everything comes out sloppy looking. Very disappointed.
