Great review. I have a brand new pair I just used for the first time on a fairly intense 6 hour hike in the Cascades this past Saturday. Part of it was scaling a 4000' incline over 2.5 miles over a mixture of mud and rock towards the top of the peak, and I have to say, the grip on these boots is unreal and inspires confidence over challenging terrain. They are nearly perfect.. but everything about that mystery lump near the ankle seam mentioned in the review came true after about 3 hours (it doesn't seem too bad, at first).Thankfully most of the pain didn't kick until the challenging part of the hike was over, but damn, talk about a pair of shoes that could almost be perfect except for a small design flaw.
@@ninemimesleft Unfortunately it didn't. The only thing I could do was to loosen the laces a bit to ease the pressure of the bump pressing against my foot. That does help, but it sucks for those who like to wear their boots tight.
March 2023: saw this review after I had ordered mine. Sure enough there's no change. The pain for my medial ankle bones seems to be caused by the way the tongue makes a double fold right at that pressure point. So, my £220 boots are not waterproof and they are the most uncomfortable on the ankle I have ever owned. Apart from that they feel great , and I don't want to give up on them. A thick sock seems to make them ok (a 2 hour test walk), but I want to wear these thin sock/sockless in summer. (Maybe with a thin waterproof sock as needed.) A gel pad ankle sleeve now looks like a promising solution. Only a proper hike will tell if that stays in place. What a palaver.
Thanks for the down-to-earth review. I've been eyeing these for a while as a dedicated summer hiking boot, but now I think I'll wait until Vivobareboot iterates on the design. Nice to see everything else is good.
I took my brand new Tracker Forest ESCs to a local cobbler today, cause I had a similar issue on the tongue where the yellow mesh meets the leather. I wanted removed what felt like a small rock under the mesh. He told me it might be a lump of hardened glue, and sure enough - after a few strokes with the cobbler's hammer the problem was resolved! Haven't felt pain at the ancles though, but curious to see what happens when I go hiking next week. The placement of that seam seems sketchy indeed.
@@magnuss4542 Allright guys, you've got me in a corner. Initially I just wanted to share that thing about the glue. My ESCs turned out a size too small, due to some start up issues Vivo was experiencing with the StrutFit online sizing platform. Therefore I'm not really in a position to give any fair feedback. Luckily Vivo informed me about their 100 Day Returns Policy, where you can try the shoes for up to 100 days and if they do not fit or find they are not for you, you can return them for a full refund. The cobbler's fix remained 100% effective throughout my test hikes. That misplaced seam was somewhat noticeable, but not a big issue for me. They seemed waterproof in puddles up to about 10-15 cm. Like the Minimalist Hunter, I opt for an upgrade with tongue placed higher up on the boot to avoid leaks. Mad respect to Vivobarefoot for pioneering these kinds of boots.
I just received my pair 2 days ago. Went out for a 3 miler this morning to prep for a 40 miler in a few weeks. Fantastic boot and super comfy. I was watching reviews while hiking and saw yours. No issue with bump/clump with the pair I received. It's a fantastic boot and sorry you all have that bump issue. Maybe they fixed it with a new batch I received?
Thank you for this video. I returned mine ESC today. The same issue with my shoes plus too much leather on the heel part from inside on the right shoe which causes even more pain. It could be the perfect boot. Version 2 is needed.
I've just received my Vivobarefoot Women's Tracker Forest ESC and I've noticed the seam as mentioned. It definitely is in an unfortunate place and will risk some problematic rubbing. The other feedback I have is that the entire boot is really too wide. I love a very wide toe-box, but this boot is wide all the way through the foot to the heel, so it's kind of like a big, sloppy slipper. A good barefoot/minimalist boot is wide through the toe-box but somewhat narrower through the mid-foot and heel to closely fit the foot. This boot is like a rectangle - the same width from toe to heel. I can't tighten the boot around the middle of my foot enough to prevent it from sliding around inside the boot. I've got Xero, Altra, Inov-8 and other Vivobarefoot boots (original Tracker boot) and was hoping this Vivo would be the goods. Pretty disappointed that it's such a sloppy fit.
@Sircombobacon I've worn thick socks and the boots have definitely molded to my foot a bit after some use, so it seems to be less of a sloppy fit now. My bigger concern is that the metal base of the hooked eyelets at the top of the boot seem to press directly on my ankle bones when I tighten up the boot. There's no real padding underneath them and they're located just in the perfectly wrong place, so it's metal on bone. Even thick socks can't fix that. I haven't worn them on any extended tramping trips as a result, just short daily walks (a few hours) where they're ok as it's not long enough to cause blisters.
I got my pair a few months ago, mid 2024, before I found this review. I did not experience the problem you described. Maybe it is a question of the shoesize, as components might not be exactly at the same relative place. I have size 42, UK 8, US 9.
They came out with a newer version called the magna forest esc which has a stretchy material that doesn't go as high, but is almlst the same exact boot. Consider that one. Thanks for the review.
I watched your review almost exactly five minutes before my boots were delivered. I’d heard about the bump in other reviews. The lining is not the same as earlier versions. The thicker, leather lining goes further down. My initial impression, walking around the house is very good. I bought a pair of the tracker FGs about five years ago. I’ve never been completely happy with them. The Michelin sole is a huge improvement. The tongue on the older trackers is annoying, massively padded, and sticking up several inches above the top of the boots. It doesn’t seem to serve any purpose beyond getting tangled up with the cuffs of my pants. The tongue on the new boots is less padded and doesn’t stick up. Finally, I really liked the bumpy laces. I’ve bought trail runners that needed to be retied frequently because the laces were slippery and the knot wouldn’t hold. It’s a small detail but much appreciated. The boots will need to be broken in before I decide how I feel about them but I’m happy with first impressions.
Just got the black version (SS2022, whereas yours are SS2021). I was hoping for an improvement, but they still have the same issue you described, so I have to return them 😕
I bought a pair of these after reading all the positive reviews by people that have been given the shoes in exchange for positive reviews! I wish I'd seen this video before. I sent mine back due to the same issue. Even after just 30 minutes walking I couldn't wait to get them off, the pain was just something I couldn't live with. I really hope Vivo barefoot listen to the feedback and release a version 2 of these as apart from this the boot is generally very good although I do agree with other viewers that the boot is a bit too wide in the middle/ and heel section.

I tried the boots and had the same problem. There is just too much going on in the ankle area. I think the rubber stitching and the interior heel cup stitching are just too close. I wore them in the house for a day and the pain was not going away. I returned the Forest ESC boots and got a pair of the Tracker FG. They have a much simpler ankle area construction and are super comfortable. I really would have preferred the Michelin sole…
Did you speak to Vivobarefoot about this problem? I wonder whether they have sorted the ankle seam problem? I have just received my new pair, and they seem fine (touch wood!)
I informed them upon my return. My concern lies in releasing a product without thorough testing. They send prototypes to TH-camrs at no cost; and get sugar coated reviews. Allow me to test your shoe before release, and I'll offer comprehensive feedback. This ensures a solid release. The flaw was very noticeable with this newer product, which is alarming. I won’t be buying a product from this company again. My new favorite boot is from Joe Nimble. I’ve run them through the ringer and holding up nicely.
I've been using a pair of these since they came out now and have found exactly the same issue as you with the inner ankle bone. I have a couple of friends that have the boots too and they also report the same issue. What I did was cut up an old wool blanket and stitched together 3 layers of it as a pad to go over that area and it hasn't been a problem since then, I used them on a 24 mile hike and they were fine.
@@liane903 I didn't stick it, I just place it between my foot and the boot upper and it stays in place being wool it grips well. Saying that I have actually replaced this with some 5mm semi compressed chiropody felt that is adhesive backed and so does stick in place to the inside of the boot.
Great review! I was trying to choose between the vivo trackers or crispi nevada. What do you think about the nevadas? Are they a good compromise "standard boot" that barefoot people can still enjoy wearing? How does the sole flexibility and heel-toe drop feel on the crispis?
Thx! The Nevada and Trackers are completely different. The Nevada is a mildly stiff mid season boot designed for heavier packs on uneven terrain. Nevada is very comfy with wider toe box, they make in wide as well. I only use these when I intend to pack heavy loads “40-100lb” Tough as nails, long lasting. Heavier boot. With a load they flex great. Plenty room to wiggles toes. Same intent but early season I wear Crispi Lapponia 2 in wide. These breath great and flex a lot more than the Nevada. Tough as nails. Very lightweight boot. Think a bomb proof sneaker. With a load they flex really great. Plenty room to wiggle toes. Keep in mind I’m hiking 4 miles in with 35-40lb and staying for 5-10 days at a time. Not car camping. If day/car hiking under 30lbs I wouldn’t wear these boots at all. I’d wear my altra sneakers with gaiters and deal with the occasional rain shower. They dry out fast. If planning on wet weather I’d rock the crispi and deal with the less barefoot feeling. The heel-toe drop isn’t an issue for me with the crispi. They are comfy. I’m still on the hunt for a light barefoot boot that’s waterproof to replace the altra shoes. Joe nimble boot is close but not waterproof and aggressive heal cup. I replaced the inserts with a hard cork insole and it helped. I would pack a heavy load with these either. Only for day hikes. Hope this helps.
I have the same boots and have worn them since September last year, they are less padded than the FG tracker II but I haven't had the same issue as this video. But I agree that ankle lace hook is not quite right. When you tie the boot the lace can cut in under the wing of leather which hold the two top laces. Having said that with a bit of care I can tie them so this doesn't happen and they are by far the the most robust vivo hiking boots so far, and kept waxed they have remain water proof even on welsh mountains. Unlike the FG Tracker II, the sole has not come away from the upper.
I have mine 4 months now and I’m very satisfied with them. I hiked about 450 km in them up to now. They have excellent grip on woodland and muddy terrain. They are waterproof when you treat them with the wax. I also felt the “bump” at first, but after a few hikes it was gone. I also have a pair of Trackers FG, but grip and waterproofness are not ideal. The ESC has a glued and stitched sole, so much stronger than the Tracker FG.
Prior to seeing your video, I just returned my new Vivobarefoot Women's Tracker Forest ESC for the very reason you describe. That clumping of the seams and the tongue on the inner ankle was a deal breaker and I was very disappointed as I have been wanting to try Vivobarefoot for ages. Additionally, for anyone that has a second toe longer than the big toe, you will need to size up as my toe was crammed against the end of the toe box even though I had used the photographic sizing app. Apart from this they are a good looking and robust boot with terrific tread.
Thanks for the good detailed review, I was just getting ready to pull the trigger on those, for $220 they should fit better. Ive been on the hunt for a good fitting boot or trail runner. I have strange feet as it is and double sock with injinji and darn tough. After many miles on Florida trails,my older Altras and Merrill’s are wearing out. I keep buying these great hiking shoes on-line and sending them back for fit issues. I should just spray Flex Seal on the bottom of my feet and go with it. If you don’t mind me asking, what size shoe are you? Did you size up? Thanks again for the honest review, apparently others are having the same issue.
No problem and thanks for watching. They fit great and are comfy if you don’t walk in them lol. If they change the inside design they will be solid on comfort, but durability would still need to be determined. I measure 9.5 but always feel better in a 10. These were size 10. So I’d say true to size for my foot. My feet aren’t narrow or real wide, kinda lean slightly wide. Someone with narrow feet might feel a bit loose in these. I hear you on spraying flex seal lol, always on the search for the perfect shoe/boot. Altra’s are great on my feet. I noticed the new lone peak 5 are slightly more narrow mid foot to heel, which I see as a benefit compared to the 4.5.
I can’t speak for these but I have the Tracker FG and they’re my favorite boots ever. I can tell you for a fact they don’t have any issues like that. My only complaint is that they’re expensive but 100% worth it.
I also have this problem. Biggest problem I cant return them anymore because its 14 days later than purchase (dutch rule or something😔) You guys maybe have a solution for this?
Ik had het aan 1 zijde. Heb het harde stukje even gemasseerd, paar keer gebogen en tussen mijn vingers gerold en het was weg. Iets dikker sokken en inlopen en het is prima.
I didn't seem to have this issue with mine. I unfortunately did the foot sizing with the app and it suggested a half a size down which my one foot wasn't too happy about. Other than that the shoe was perfect and I had no other issues so I'm guessing it depends on your ankle placement. I know there aren't many reviews out yet but just don't want to dissuade others from buying this shoe because like I said for me they really felt great and didn't have the issue you speak of.
Did this bother you on both boots or just the one? I just bought these, having seen this video, hoping that it was just an issue with your pair. Mine arrived yesterday, and I'm only having this problem in my left boot. Super annoying. My pair was definitely previously worn, had some creasing, and none of the oil that was supposed to come with it. Definitely sucks. Boots feel great on my feet otherwise (which is extremely rare) and I am having an impossible time finding a minimalist boot that has actual traction.
Both boots had the issue. I’ve been testing another boot the newer Joe Nimble. Insane traction. I’ve ran into issues with it though. The heel has a big cup paired with a squishy sole, and this is causing heel rubbing. I’ve tried using extra padding, which helps, but doesn’t eliminate rubbing on longer hikes. They need to stiffen the sole and/or reduce the cup. My go to boot for hiking in decent temps are the Altra lone peaks with gators. For packing heavy weight 80-100lbs I use Crispy boots. For winter I use schnees hunter or the CamuksXtreme.
Great review, very helpful. I've just ordered the new tracker sg all weather, hope they don't have a similar problem to these that would be a heartbreak.
I had a pair of the new all weathers. I had to send them back after 3 days, didn’t feel as comfortable as my tracker 2 FG, completely rubbed my Achilles heel.
@@ELARALIGHTEROS ah that’s a shame. So I’ve had mine for about a month now and have to say I’ve had a really good experience with the SG’s. They’re incredibly comfortable and they appear to be the most robust barefoot shoes I own. Very solid build, they should last a long time.
Damn... I just received some of these and thought the exact same thing... they were the only waterproof, barefoot style hiking boots I could find online, so it's not like I can just find something else!!! I'm hoping that it will be OK once the boots have been broken in, but I don't know.
I ordered these and the tracker fg 2 to compare them. Decided to go for the tracker FG 2 so I returned the tracker forest shoes after I tried them at home. So no long term review, but the issue described in the video would have been noticed right away.
Thanks so much for sharing that this isn't a problem on the pair you ordered. I hear you: I love my Tracker FGs. I am thinking about getting the Forests for mud and mossy rocks for grip. What made you choose the FGs instead of the Forests? Was it a comfort preference? Or the look of them? Or something else?
Bruh, had the same experience. I decided to pull the trigger anyway after seeing your review just to be sure, because, damn, these really are the perfect boots except for this little bump.....in the absolute most inconvenient spot!! WTF mate?! Low and behold, I experienced immediate stabbing pain on my left medial malleolus (ankle bone). So disappointed. So much potential, lost. Gonna check out the Magna Forest ESC's instead.
Sadly no :( At least for me the Magna Forest ESC have a similar but different problem around the ankle. After 30 minutes of walking I felt pain just underneath the ankle bone. They have a thick leather pad that makes a V-shaped junction with the rest of the fabric: the tip of the junction hits right underneath my ankle and it is very painful. I feel it even with double thick socks... I haven't tried cushioning pads yet but I don't think they will solve the problem. It's really unfortunate because they are comfortable under every other aspect and they are such nice looking shoes. I hope they make a v2 ankle-friendly model soon!
That’s a monster of a sole, would be great for more treacherous trails where that tread is really needed. I wish I had this model when I did this one trip that was really rocky, I wore my Tracker FG and you can feel those rocks and not in a good way. Those like like they’d do the job. Maybe the issue you got is a manufacturing defect? I hope so cause I want a pair.
Yes it is! The seam from yellow mesh to leather is right on the ankle bone. They need to move the seam down lower and cushion the entire ankle with the leather. They fix that and these will be ready for an adventure.
@@theminimalisthunter2191 yeah hopefully they’re looking out. I know the Xero owner really takes note and is in a lot of the Facebook groups and will listen and improve so hopefully vivo does the same.
They put the rivet Exactly the wrong place. I would have taken them back and never accepted that. And a manufacturer that can let such a thing through, I'd never have any confidence in again. I mean, it's really bad. Already in the design stage, they should have thought about it, but didn't. Shoulda coulda woulda, but didn't.
@@krimke881 i've had my Tracker FGs for a few years now and t's a great sole on almost all terrain EXCEPT mud... where they really don't have a good grip. Also: not waterproof AT ALL, my biggest gripe with what is otherwise one of my favourite boots ever.
@@krimke881 It's not bad at all, It's a firm ground (which is often dry) sole on a waterproof boot. Whereas, the chunky & grippy Michelin sole - suited to mud - is on a non waterproof boot. Would make more sense, the other way round, imo.
@@michaelafay1247 I had an early pair of Vivo boots (fabric) that purported to be waterproof, and my feet got wet if someone sneezed next to me! Might have to try Xero waterproof boots next!
How can you review these boots without using them for real ? I´ve used mine for 8 month every single day. Carrying heavy equipment. love them. And to those who seek proper reviews - go for people who use them a lot.
Before leaving a comment, it's crucial to check the release date and other users' feedback on the same issue. Seeking proper reviews is key. I made this video because those who claimed to offer genuine reviews often seemed to prioritize promoting the product for views or sponsorship. As an avid outdoorsman, especially during elk hunting, where I often carry loads up to 100lbs, wearable boots are a must. Unfortunately, these boots didn't meet that standard, as many others have also experienced. The poorly thought-out seam design at the ankle joint is a glaring flaw. While they may have addressed the issue since, I won't be purchasing from them again. There are much better options out there with well-considered designs, made by hand and not in a Chinese factory like these boots. To each their own.
Man paying over $200 for a boot the last thing you need are these amateur design flaws. Honestly i think vivo is just overhyped nonsense. Two of the best barefoot shoes i have were the cheapest

Thank you so much! This will help me a lot to make my decision
Do you prefer the escapes, or the tracker 2 FGs? Trying to decide between the 2, for an all-around winter/hiking boot
What is the most km you did at once with ESC model?
@@marko-182 about 30 km. I tested them on a 4 day trip in the Belgian Ardennes, about 90 km in total.
Are you the same size in tracker FG and tracker forest ESC?
@@nathantibbetts3895 yes
Prior to seeing your video, I just returned my new Vivobarefoot Women's Tracker Forest ESC for the very reason you describe. That clumping of the seams and the tongue on the inner ankle was a deal breaker and I was very disappointed as I have been wanting to try Vivobarefoot for ages. Additionally, for anyone that has a second toe longer than the big toe, you will need to size up as my toe was crammed against the end of the toe box even though I had used the photographic sizing app. Apart from this they are a good looking and robust boot with terrific tread.
I would guess the Magna Forest ESC would mitigate this?
Had these 1 day. Super comfy, impressed so far
what about now?
I have exactly the same problem with mine. I think I'm goiing to send them back.
Makes ya wonder if they really tested these before production.
It’s bad eh?
That pressure point is a bummer. I hope they fix it because these look like they could be really cool boots.
Maybe you fured it out, but you're supposed to use your longer foot. That's how you get the perfect size with regular socks.
Hello, how did it go? Pray tell! ^^
Xero has some barefoot hiking boots. I still prefer Vivo's shoe quality more though
I bought the women's version and I don't have this issue. They fit great.
Are you still happy with them
I ordered these and the tracker fg 2 to compare them. Decided to go for the tracker FG 2 so I returned the tracker forest shoes after I tried them at home. So no long term review, but the issue described in the video would have been noticed right away.
Still happy with the tracker FG though after 2 weeks in the mountains.

Can confirm the uncomfortable seam placement :/
Bruh, had the same experience. I decided to pull the trigger anyway after seeing your review just to be sure, because, damn, these really are the perfect boots except for this little bump.....in the absolute most inconvenient spot!! WTF mate?! Low and behold, I experienced immediate stabbing pain on my left medial malleolus (ankle bone). So disappointed. So much potential, lost. Gonna check out the Magna Forest ESC's instead.
What are the magnas like??
Solid review🔥
I own thirteen pairs of vivos, but you've put me off this one!
This Michelin sole needs to be on the Tracker FG, then I'd buy them!
Why? Is the fg sole so bad?
Great video just put in 1.5x speed
These shoes are way too expensive to have issues.
Subbed
Man paying over $200 for a boot the last thing you need are these amateur design flaws. Honestly i think vivo is just overhyped nonsense. Two of the best barefoot shoes i have were the cheapest
Just take a blow dryer to that piece of shit lump and work it. It’s gonna disappear eventually.
