To say that a 3/32nd action is going to cause a buzzy sound with an instrument with a properly done fret setup is the most absurdly ridiculous thing I've ever heard. 3/32nd is the standard action height.

I've got a D-40RW made in Vancouver, BC in 2007. I think it was the original run for this model. As far as I could find out, 50 were made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Long & McQuade, a major Canadian music retailer. It's a beautiful guitar that plays like a dream. I think I paid about $1200 Canadian when I bought it. I see they now go for over twice that amount.

What a very nice sounding guitar. My local music store has one of these guitars in stock at the moment. I've heard the price is around $1700. That is a great value for such a great sound. It sounds about as good as my d18 with maybe a bit more bass. If I couldn't get an hd28, this would be a great substitute.

Just wanted to answer your comment, to clarify. I've done side-by-side comparisons of various dreadnought-style guitars. I've tried the D40r (the rosewood version of this guitar) with a bunch of Martins (HD28V, D18, D35 and HD35), and the Larrivee didn't have that 'Martin' vibe. It's a good guitar, don't get me wrong, but for people looking for a Martin-substitute, I'd say they should try them out. The Larrivee had a more prominent midrange response, and the bass/treble had a different feel to them. Not saying good or bad, just different from Martin.

John gets a bad rap on the Rig Rundowns but he seems a good guy and he's a great player...

Guitar salesman and "Good Guy" in the same ballpark about as unlikely the same thing about a used car salesman. Their entire living revolves around pushing the most overpriced gear on the least suspecting customer, as well as purposely misleading people about products and product issues to earn as much commission as possible.

his passages are somewhat muffled and muted at times-- probably due to his pick and claw pick style--- he'd be a better tele player

I have one - chords are gorgeous and it projects beautifully- picking is not bad, but not its strong suit.

I've heard you play a bunch of electric guitars. This is the first acoustic demo I have heard and it sounds excellent. You really have a knack for acoustic playing. I think you should do a lot more acoustic work.

He looks a bit like Jim Carrey, sounds a bit like Nicholas Cage, but plays very well. I think I prefer his reviews to his Rig Rundowns, they seem much more focused.

what is the first song he plays?

  • @MrTuberguber
    @MrTuberguber ปีที่แล้ว

It could have been set up in the summer and the winter time furnace has dried the air affecting the action. Hydrate, back off the truss rod or shim the saddle. But don't blame the manufacturer.

Does Larrivee use a maple or rosewood bridgplate on this D-40R?

You're a great player but you're not so much with generalized statements about acoustic guitars. I've had several "Dreads with 3/32" at the 12th, Low E, you could bang on all day and not hear all the rattling and buzzing that guitar is producing. I went and found a D40R. It had a LOT more volume and bottom end and no buzzing of note. I didn't buy it because the neck angle was off a bit. I 'm betting the angle is off on the one you're playing albeit the headstock is likely tilted down more than the common upward movement. I tried to get it straight with Larrivee, first through the dealer, then via a sales Rep who simply won't return my calls. Could be a great guitar but , as with all acoustics, it needs to start life with the proper specs. No thanks to Larrivee. WoW ! soon as i brought up the subject all the '' Larry Lovers'' screamed heresy. ''' We have never seen an instance of a bad neck angle on a Larry !!!! "" ...... Right. Do so some looking and you'll find otherwise. I actually expect there to be a certain percentage but, when folks want to bury and deny the facts ?? No future there

You'd be surprised how butt-hurt people get when you admit that you don't like their specific flavor of guitar. You even have the simpering morons who will tell you things like "it doesn't sound good because your speakers/headphones aren't expensive enough!" or that you're unqualified to say what sounds good to you.
You'd also be surprised how many fools will literally believe that, because their ONE example of a guitar is good, that ALL examples of that guitar are the same.
I mean the snake-oil sales and bull crap tactics salesman push on musicians is bad enough without all of the dimwits willing to give them free PR because they overpaid for X guitar. Not to mention how many companies expect you to literally spend another 100$+ immediately after purchasing a guitar to "set it up" when a 125$ Orangewood comes that way, and any reputable company will make sure it's done from the get-go.

I ordered and received a new D-28 from a big on-line dealer last year, and found the neck on it was as you describe on the Larrivee - tilted down. There was even a shim under the very tall bridge saddle to compensate. Once I replaced the damn coated strings it came with, with regular non-coated PB mediums it sounded divine. But it was nearly unplayable. There was no way to get the guitar to feel right. I tried many things. Neck set wrong is hard to overcome. I was able to return it however.

Not likely on new guitars, if the action has been set super low at the nut and the truss rod is loosened to get all the relief possible what may need to be done is either first try a higher saddle. If the saddle has also been lowered super low that may work. Or if the nut string slots have been lowered for very low or super low action it may need a new nut to raise action. Or you can use superglue gel with a mix of bone shavings (saved from when sanding down nuts or saddles), fill in the slots and refile with nut files. Then set proper relief with truss rod and should be good.

I know, unless someone not only plays perfectly, and reads, pronounces English perfectly, with no "umms" and "aahs", unless they sound like they've been in front of camera for years, I can't listen to them either. asshat.

Too boomy, and definitely not a clean sounding guitar from the highs to the lows. I wouldn't trade my S6 for it, plus he has beat the crap out of it.
