My dad's Filipino-Chinese and My mother is Tongan. I was born in California, But my grandparents sent me to the Philippines to stay with my grandmother. Growing up there, I easily learned Tagalog for my second language. and speaking with all the locals made it easier. BUT I cannot speak Hokkien very well, as my grandparents spoke to me, I can only reply in Tagalog. BUT now as an adult, I can understand most of the Hokkien, BUT I will be watching your channel, to further my knowledge. It will benefit my future in Business. Thank you for this channel.

It's been years now since I've been bullied by my relatives and label me as "Hua na gong", for years I have been trying to find resources to connect to my origin. I tried to learn the Taiwanese hokkien, since some of my cousins told me that theoretically they are a lot similar, however the moment I went to view your videos from your vlog I started to ponder why Filipino Hokkien is a lot more practical and better when it's a Chinoy First Hand who teaches unlike the complex Taiwanese Hokkien. wow someone actually made one again besides the ones by tomdavid from some years ago. im a young tsinoy teen with roughly the same background as mish and let me tell you some unique little trivia i discovered about our philippine hokkien despite i dont actually speak it at all besides curiosity. it actually has some unique traits as a unique dialect as compared to the hokkien dialects from fujian china, taiwan, singapore, penang malaysia, medan indonesia, jakarta indonesia, etc. our philippine hokkien has this weird behavior of changing hokkien words that start with letter L and followed by letter I into those of letter D (english or filipino D, not pinyin D). for example, 你 is pronounced in proper hokkien just like all other countries as " Lí " but in philippine hokkien, hokkien speakers pronounce it as " Dí " with hard D. this can be seen as well in other words which the usual philippine hokkien speaker does not notice he/she behaviorally does. 冷氣 (léng-khì) meaning (air conditioner/cold air) becomes (díng-khì). 生日(siⁿ-li̍t) meaning (birthday) becomes (si-di̍t). 生理(seng-lí /sng-lí ) meaning (business) becomes (seng-dí ). many more words are like this. this funny little detail is just like how singaporeans and malaysian chinese say (wá) instead of the proper 我(góa). also 相同 (saⁿ-tâng/siong-tông) meaning (identical; same) in philippine hokkien has morphed into one word (sâng) because... aiya sâng sâng sâng lol. also fyi just a note, POJ (Pe̍h-ōe-jī ) and Tâi-lô can also be used as well to transcribe hokkien in latin letters besides mandarin pinyin. i may recommend using Wiktionary.org for POJ reference transcription and comparing dialectal meanings through the major chinese topolects and niawdeleon's online english-hokkien dictionary (niawdeleon.com/hokkien-dictionary/) from her website as she translated to english the results from the online taiwanese hokkien dictionary of the taiwanese government
The hokkien spoken in the Philippines is very similar to those spoken in Singapore and southern Malaysia. In northern Malaysia and Medan , Indonesia, the tone is slightly different and heavily mixed with the local Malay language.

Very nice. atleast ma preserve natin ang culture ng hokkien kahit mandarin na ang kilala all over the world. Sa mainland especially in big cities of Fujian province ay kokgi (mandarin) na ang salita ng mga bata. Slowly nawawala na ang Hokkien, same thing with SG at Malaysia Hokkien decendants, they prefer Mandarin or Singlish na.

I’m so glad I found out about this. I recently learned about Hokkien and wanted to know more about the language. My grandma was a Chinese actually and according to my mom and aunties she’s fluent in the language (afaik it was Mandarin) but they were not really taught how to speak it. I wanted to atleast embrace it as well so I’m glad I found out about your channel! ❤️

Jhei Fidel Kotoshi it would be quite hard to put hanzi equivalent as the words does not directly translate to Mandarin. 😊 We also use different terms in PH not applicable for use in Mandarin. Taiwanese Tai-Gi would be a better choice as it can directly translate each Mandarin word. Hope this helps! 😊
I live in a large Chinese community with a small Filipino community close by. A very small handful might be Chinoy. But for sure there are many ethnic Chinese from Indonesia and can speak Chinese fluently. In the past, the Indonesians really hated the Chinese and encouraged them to not speak Chinese. I don’t think the Philippines is like that since people are mixed.
There are a lot of people who are mixed Chinese-Indonesian also, but there definitely was a lot of discrimination in Indonesia, both from the government and from others in the community.
Through DNA testing, i found out that my paternal ancestor came from China. A southern Han according to CRI genetics. Using other info from other genetic markers, i am probably a descendant of a Zheng. My having Chinese descent is a big surprise for me and my paternal relatives. Because of the discovery, i am now studying how to speak chinese fookien.
My Chinese blood is too far in my lineage now that I can't be considered Chinese anymore. My maternal grandfather is named Lido (yes, like the restaurant 😂) by her mother Conchita Guanzon despite the hispanic upbringing (my lolo do not eat rice, can you believe it). I guess she wanted to at least give his son a Chinese sounding first name if not let him grow up as a Chinoy. My uncle Henry, wants us to recognize our Chinese origin despite their family's complete assimilation, at least for the sake of knowing where we came from. A few years ago channels like this do not exist (there was one but did not continue making videos anymore) and it's a delight to finally have a channel that could probably help me learn my 5th language 😂
Thank you for making these videos. I'm not Tsinoy myself, I'm Chinese Indonesian, but even in our country there was actually institutionalized pressure to not speak our version of Hokkien. Back when anti-Chinese sentiment was very high. Nowadays, only Chinese Indonesians living in few select provinces know how to speak Hokkien. What sad is that, nowadays, many young Chinese Indonesians who don't speak Hokkien are joining in to pressure and mock Chinese Indonesians who can speak Hokkien to not speak Hokkien, because they feel that Chinese Indonesians that speak Hokkien are disrupting the harmony between different ethnicity. Which of course is hypocritical when many young Indonesians nowadays try their best to speak English instead of Indonesian.
kale1doscope though here in PH there is no such pressure, next generation of Tsinoy’s now are more into English or Mandarin(taught in school) than Hokkien. Hokkien is basically really taught at home, which sad to say are not being practiced as often as we want to to train the next generation of Tsinoys. Thanks for watching!

I could not seem to find a decent one for my kids to learn. This is why I decided to make my own. With the hopes of even if my kids fail to learn now, they can get back to these and re-learn it. 😊 Also several Hokkien channels available but it does not match PH Hokkien.

Tbh the reason why a lot of PhilChi kids don't use Hokkien is because there are many terms that can't be described in Hokkien. I know hokkien, but thereare times where a conversation couldn't be carried out in hokkien due to a complex topic (Ex. Chemical bonds, Economics) Other that that, I tend to use it as a secret language with my Chinese friends. And I agree that this language should be passed down, but also believe there is not much anyone can do to prevent the extinction of secondary/tertiary languages. Many if not terminologies/concepts/softwares are in English. Programming in Chinese is so much harder compared to English.
It's because hindi na masyado tinuturo sa school. English and Mandarin na ang conversation sa chinese class ng Manila. Even at home. Mga young filchi parents english na ang conversation nila sa bahay minsan taglish pa para sozy. Back in my elementary days,the teacher in school, taught us to memorize mathematics in hokkien with speed. Like: di- it = di (2x1=2) di - di =si (2x2=4) di- sa = lak (2x3=6) Now english na at mandarin. Also Singaporean Math narin ginagamit.

Very nice. atleast ma preserve natin ang culture ng hokkien kahit mandarin na ang kilala all over the world. Sa mainland especially in big cities of Fujian province ay kokgi (mandarin) na ang salita ng mga bata. Slowly nawawala na ang Hokkien, same thing with SG at Malaysia Hokkien decendants, they prefer Mandarin or Singlish na.

I’m so glad I found out about this. I recently learned about Hokkien and wanted to know more about the language. My grandma was a Chinese actually and according to my mom and aunties she’s fluent in the language (afaik it was Mandarin) but they were not really taught how to speak it. I wanted to atleast embrace it as well so I’m glad I found out about your channel! ❤️

Philippine Hokkien is a Coastal Quanzhou accent (泉海腔) based dialect because many part of Jinjiang is Coastal Quanzhou accent spoken area.

Jhei Fidel Kotoshi it would be quite hard to put hanzi equivalent as the words does not directly translate to Mandarin. 😊 We also use different terms in PH not applicable for use in Mandarin. Taiwanese Tai-Gi would be a better choice as it can directly translate each Mandarin word. Hope this helps! 😊

I live in a large Chinese community with a small Filipino community close by. A very small handful might be Chinoy. But for sure there are many ethnic Chinese from Indonesia and can speak Chinese fluently. In the past, the Indonesians really hated the Chinese and encouraged them to not speak Chinese. I don’t think the Philippines is like that since people are mixed.
There are a lot of people who are mixed Chinese-Indonesian also, but there definitely was a lot of discrimination in Indonesia, both from the government and from others in the community.

Through DNA testing, i found out that my paternal ancestor came from China. A southern Han according to CRI genetics. Using other info from other genetic markers, i am probably a descendant of a Zheng. My having Chinese descent is a big surprise for me and my paternal relatives. Because of the discovery, i am now studying how to speak chinese fookien.

My Chinese blood is too far in my lineage now that I can't be considered Chinese anymore. My maternal grandfather is named Lido (yes, like the restaurant 😂) by her mother Conchita Guanzon despite the hispanic upbringing (my lolo do not eat rice, can you believe it). I guess she wanted to at least give his son a Chinese sounding first name if not let him grow up as a Chinoy. My uncle Henry, wants us to recognize our Chinese origin despite their family's complete assimilation, at least for the sake of knowing where we came from. A few years ago channels like this do not exist (there was one but did not continue making videos anymore) and it's a delight to finally have a channel that could probably help me learn my 5th language 😂

Thank you for making these videos. I'm not Tsinoy myself, I'm Chinese Indonesian, but even in our country there was actually institutionalized pressure to not speak our version of Hokkien. Back when anti-Chinese sentiment was very high. Nowadays, only Chinese Indonesians living in few select provinces know how to speak Hokkien. What sad is that, nowadays, many young Chinese Indonesians who don't speak Hokkien are joining in to pressure and mock Chinese Indonesians who can speak Hokkien to not speak Hokkien, because they feel that Chinese Indonesians that speak Hokkien are disrupting the harmony between different ethnicity. Which of course is hypocritical when many young Indonesians nowadays try their best to speak English instead of Indonesian.
kale1doscope though here in PH there is no such pressure, next generation of Tsinoy’s now are more into English or Mandarin(taught in school) than Hokkien. Hokkien is basically really taught at home, which sad to say are not being practiced as often as we want to to train the next generation of Tsinoys. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this, my father side family speaks fookien and i get ashamed of myself from not understanding what the elders say which causes me to avoid conversations in general. Do you know other resources to learn fookien?
I could not seem to find a decent one for my kids to learn. This is why I decided to make my own. With the hopes of even if my kids fail to learn now, they can get back to these and re-learn it. 😊 Also several Hokkien channels available but it does not match PH Hokkien.

Nowadays, Chinese schools use Mandarin to instruct in class. As more teachers coming from China are available to teach.

Tbh the reason why a lot of PhilChi kids don't use Hokkien is because there are many terms that can't be described in Hokkien. I know hokkien, but thereare times where a conversation couldn't be carried out in hokkien due to a complex topic (Ex. Chemical bonds, Economics)
Other that that, I tend to use it as a secret language with my Chinese friends.
And I agree that this language should be passed down, but also believe there is not much anyone can do to prevent the extinction of secondary/tertiary languages. Many if not terminologies/concepts/softwares are in English.
Programming in Chinese is so much harder compared to English.
It's because hindi na masyado tinuturo sa school. English and Mandarin na ang conversation sa chinese class ng Manila. Even at home. Mga young filchi parents english na ang conversation nila sa bahay minsan taglish pa para sozy.
Back in my elementary days,the teacher in school, taught us to memorize mathematics in hokkien with speed.
Like:
di- it = di (2x1=2)
di - di =si (2x2=4)
di- sa = lak (2x3=6)
Now english na at mandarin. Also Singaporean Math narin ginagamit.
well, filipinos still speak tagalog and bisaya and other filipino languages. whats stopping them? they just use loanwords....
