Thank you! This was so fun to make and so fun to play for my 2 classes of 6th graders. We modified the method, and made the game board with canvas, drew the grids with sharpie and made the game pieces with Model Magic. At the end of the day, the students can wrap all the pieces in their piece of cloth and take them home. They really enjoyed the lesson.
And you should pronounce "dux" as "dooks," like the Romans did. It is after all the word we get "duke" from. That would have been the English pronunciation too, before the Great Vowel Shift.
@Anatoli Smorrin That may be so for ancient Greek but with restored classical Latin you use a ks for the x. For example rex which has the IPA: /reːks/.
You would have to use green or clear plastic and then paint it with transparent green paint. There's no way to actually handle glass at home, unless you get custom made glass blocks and start sanding them to shape. But it would be extremely hard and it would break easily, I would try with plastic, but I doubt that it won't work.
Thanks for following! The ceramic dragon is just about done! yay. The big foam dragon might be a couple of weeks. Thats a lot of work. I will post updates to facebook and G+ for sure.
Epic fantasy, how are you so talented at making cool props, decorations, swords and other blades, glass bazookas, plastic figurines and much more, and still have a social life? You must put a lot of time into this stuff! P.S I love the hidden blade tutorial!
It should be noted that this game's rules are speculation by historians and there are several different methods. I've been using Ulrich Schädler's interpretation, no dux, and pieces can only move to an adjacent square. Oh, and you can't move between enemy pieces unless it would block one of the enemy pieces. I think you're using something more like Kowalski's reconstruction.
I'm just curious, why couldn't this same version be played on a standard 8 square chess board ? minus a few pcs. no doubt , but it should play out the same. correct ?
The game was played on several different sizes of boards by the Romans. Boards of 8x8, 8x9 and 8x11 have also been found. On an 8x8 board you would have 8 soldiers (pawns) and 1 general (king) per side. If you have a chess set, that is all you need to play Latrunculi..
Hey. You can make captain hooks hook. Can you look up an Ancient Greek game. You can also make shoe box matexi scene. Star Wars Death Star made out of paper mâché or pineata. Finally ax or pick axe from foam board.
Great video thank you for publishing it it taught me a lot I was unfamiliar with the game and you explained most definitely basic rules and how to make the board thanks again.
Hey I just subscribed and wanted to know if you could make a Greek game. I would love that! I read tons of Greek stuff and want to play Greek games. Also nice videos. Cant wait to see your new videos :)
Can you capture more than one piece at a time. Say one player has two pieces next to each other in the same row. and you mange to move one piece on each side?
well he name is sir crocodile from the anime one piece and he has a hook in his right hand and i want to know if you could make a tutorial on how to make it.
Hey Will brilliant video as usual , can I ask you to maybe make some Viking armour or weapons (shields, swords , helmets) cheers bro keep up the good work ;)
Forge a bow? I'm pretty sure that bows are usually not forged. They are made out of wood or something similar that has certain strength, but can also be easily bend. Metal bow would be extremely weak, but I guess you didn't necessarily mean "forge". But ninja attire would be cool =D
Hey epic. Cat in the hat hat is a project you should do. Also can you explain stop motion anama. It seems cool and I want to try it. You should do slow motion video. Finally I challenge you to make a sword out of Cheerios, and wire.
Hey epic. Medieval swords that looks like was made of steel but really foam board. Also lava Aztec sword. Neck collar that looks like Frankenstein bolts. Make a metal working spring. Small gallentine ( French execution devise during the French resolution. Finally Native American game.
I found the template of assassins creed hidden blade and now working on it. You can do GI Joe katana sword out of foam board. Assassins creed throwing knife out out of foam board. Also mount rush more. Finally bow and arrow from the game toom raider.
Hey BIG FAN! I love creating things straight out of fantasy. Are you familiar with the new DMC:Devil May Cry video game? Well Ninja Theory had rebooted Dante's signature sword, Rebellion, and I was hoping you could approach this project to be made. Making Corvo's was fun! I'm hoping if you do make Rebellion try to make it at household! Easier for me! THANKS! :)
Hello. I followed the instructions and made the game. Looking forward to playing it but not sure if the Dux can be used to trap the opponent's Dux; capture an opponent's soldier or is it against the rules to do either or both. Loved the video.
Hey. Big fan did some of your weapons. How about you make Rome columnseam out of marshmallows, chocolate and tooth pick. Bio diorama, Grand Canyon. Finally glow in the dark socks / game. Thank
epicfantasy Hey, whens your nect random giveaway? Cause when you have one im gonna try to get this or the dagger you made a while back that one was amazing.
Hey, epicfantasy, this guy totally stole your video! His name is Derrick Foronda! He didn't even give you credit in the video. It was a straight-up download and re-upload of your video.

Thanks for watching and great to hear the kids had fun! Pretty good idea about using canvas.
My sister's a teacher as well and she likes taking games to play at lunch with the kids. I think I'll tell her about your idea!
You are welcome! Have fun making and playing it! Its a lot of fun to play.
Oh! And tell your brother I am starting a very big diorama of a castle siege scene. That will be fun. Its going to be around 8 feet in size.
Alternative way to construct this game:buy a box of Hershey's kisses, and a box of mentos. Then draw the eight by twelve grid on one of the boxes.
Would be a sweet tooth kids favorite game then. :-)
This is great. I love ancient games! Thanks for sharing! greetings from Colombia
Great! Very interesting. Thanks for sharing historical knowledge.
Thanks for the suggestion! More ancient games coming!
great question! Yes, the dux can be used to capture other team pieces.

Dux is actually latin for Duke. whereas Rex means king.

It's very similar to Hnefatafl(Viking Chess) actually. The captures and movement are basically the same.
It sure is! I also have a tutorial on Hnefatafl here: th-cam.com/video/dNM4054Io7I/w-d-xo.html
Can you skip your turn in this game, and if not what happens if you still have a duck but have no legal moves?
I'm just curious, why couldn't this same version be played on a standard 8 square chess board ? minus a few pcs. no doubt , but it should play out the same. correct ?
