"Rock Lobster" was the bonzo hit that broke the B-52s in 1979 and is a _must-hear_ ; "Planet Claire" is also fun, but the late-80s hits "Love Shack" and "Roam" are top shelf party tracks.
You can't listen to the B-52s and not smile! They are so unique and cool. Their music was insane but yet so relatable. There was no one like them. I remember learning about them in college (after their breakout years before). This song was my favorite. Rock Lobster is a cult classic and one of the most iconic songs ever!
I'm so glad you did the audio first. Oftentimes absorbing B-52s music AND the visuals of seeing them at the same time can be a bit overwhelming. I recommend you give them a few more listens to appreciate what great musicians they are before you get kicked in the teeth by the entire package. 😂
When I was in college, late 70's and early 80's, B-52's were HUGE. Walking down any street you would hear this song and others floating out of windows all up and down all along the way. It was so different, you had to notice. Also try "Planet Claire" and, later on "Roam" and "Love Shack".
Lennon's two favorite songs at the time of his death: Rock Lobster by the B-52's and "Coming Up" by Paul McCartney. Both of these songs really excited him.
Ha! This one is an acquired taste; the older I get, the more I love it! Next B-52’s songs: Rock Lobster and Love Shack ❤❤❤ AND, I WANT my own private Idaho 😂
You were right on with your "bird is the word" reference. That is a song by a surf-rock group called the Trashmen from 1963 called "Surfin' Bird," and the B52s during this period (they started performing the song in 1978 but this recording was released in 1980) were totally into early 1960s revival and had a surf-rock guitar sound. They even dressed in early sixties styles at the time. Their most famous song from this period, "Rock Lobster," parodies the imagery and sounds of early 1960s beach movies like "Beach Blanket Bingo" and "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini." Early sixties revival was kind of a hipster trend at the time, with groups like the Revillos, the early Go Go's, some Blondie, Mod revival bands, ska revival bands, and many others aping sounds and styles from that period.
John Lennon's favorite group just before we lost him. "Listen Yoko! They're doing your schtick!". They were able to mainstream Yoko Ono style vocals where John was just not able to as her producer. However, you need to listen to the original, Yoko Ono's "Give Me Something" as for the inspiration of the vocals by Cyndi Wilson and Kate Pierson. Fred Schneider is the male lead vocalist in the song.
I'm English, but my great grandfather went to America at the end of the 19th century for work. He died in 1927, when my mum was one years old. I was told he worked in Kansas but was buried in Idaho. I couldn't understand why he would be buried so far away. I asked my mum whereabouts in Idaho he was buried, but couldn't get her to understand that Idaho was at least as big as England. So I dreamed of Idaho, reading everything I could, and studying the culture of the Shoshone and Nez Pierce tribes. Recently I studied my family history and found out that great grandfather was actually buried in Iola, a small town in Kansas and had never been near Idaho. But I still dream about going there. This record by the B52's is fun, like all their songs are, but it doesn't really describe the mountains and rivers which I want to see.
Sweet! I was twelve when The B-52s broke through with "Rock Lobster", so all their early work reminds me of being a young teenager. When you're ready for more from them check out "Lava", "Planet Claire", "Give Me Back My Man", "Channel Z", and "Dance This Mess Around" among many others. And if you're felling adventuresome, check out "Tu as deconne´" by Vaudou Game from 2021. Togolese funk from Paris that sounds like The B-52s. It wasn't a lobster, but it grooved like one...
Thanks for turning m,e onto a cool new band! I just checked out "Tu as deconne´" by Vaudou Game per your recommendation and I'm digging it! Definitely has that B-52's vibe!!! 😎
Almost all of the B-52s songs are silly or whimsical. Their sound is a mix of punk guitar and dance bass lines. They were a hit on college campuses in the early eights before they hit it big with Love Shack. Their early stuff was more raw with some really interesting guitar work by Ricky Wilson. Quite a bit different that the hair metal guitar wizardry that was taking a firm foothold.
600 songs and growing. It would be difficult to pick out your Top 10 Favorites. I could do that, but it would be much easier to pick out my top 10 least liked. I wonder where/if we would agree on both list.
Must watch the performance video. Their personalities and talents are on full display.

B-52’s are proof we shouldn’t take life too seriously. We should relax and have some fun.
The B 52's were just fun. They were a kick in the pants.

My favorite B52s song. Also 52 Girls and Planet Claire are cool, when he shouts out "But She Isn't" in Planet Claire, love that part.

I saw them in concert on this album tour. They are truly singular and iconic at the same time. 😁💖
I'm very jealous.
Well you know how greatly appreciated your reaction is to this song! Great stuff!

I find it impossible to believe Yoko Ono ever inspired anyone musically.

DIRTY BACK ROAD!
Classic New Wave!
That's my interpretation of this song. A person marches to their own drummer. Living life by their rules and to hell with what others think. JMO
Thanks!

that song ROCKS!
My favorite from the B-52's. I took my son to see them live when he was six. Teach your children right.
That entire album is good

@@VidiotSavante Cool. I only stumbled across the song two weeks ago myself, so happy to pass along the recommendation

I remember seeing the B-52’s do this song on Saturday Night Live in 1979 and it was so visually bizarre that I thought it was a comedy skit.
I suggest Give Back My Man and of course Love Shack.
New wave era
Devo > Whip it
Sort of same style as this song

The music video: STOP MAKING SENSE.
