After all the Opeth`s songs you did, it is still super funny that almost with each new song you hear, you think that there is a guest vocalist. Mikael is a voice chamaleon
I think in Heir Apparent is the most brutal Mikael`s demon voice ever, but in Coil....well, you'll see! And I hope you ever do a Morningrise song cause i`m very curious to hear your opinion of the demon on that album (Black Rose Immortal would be great, but is 20 minutes long! If that is too much, the Night and The Silent Water would be a good choice
Hope you can find a good version that melts both songs together as in the album, I've seen there's a popular TH-cam video that messes it all and puts a pause in between songs
This reaction did not disappoint lol, guest demon is hilarious, but as I’m sure you now know (and deep-down always knew lol) there is no guest demon nor guest vocalist on this album period, this album all the vocals are performed by Mikael. Also, the two songs you haven’t done on this album that precede this one are two of the best the album has to offer, Godhead’s Lament and Moonlapse Vertigo, I think you’ll really enjoy both of those songs, they’re both fantastic, this is my favorite Opeth album by far, epseocially when listened to in its proper order, it all just seams together so perfectly. And considering that you could handle the growls in this song, know that you can handle the growls in any Opeth song coz it doesn’t get any heavier than that middle section, although heir apparent comes close lol
@@WDkuru are you referring to the melody around the 47 second mark? Because if so, that’s one of my favorite guitar melodies ever, not just from Opeth, it’s so emotional and beautiful, and then when the acoustic guitars kick in over it, god what an amazing section. I also love the clean, jazzy solo after the 2nd verse and “hook”
yes, this song features pinch harmonics and a wah wah-effect. This album was recorded before Zakk Wylde and Kirk Hammett had used them all, respectively.
Hi! Awesome reaction as always! I have nothing else to say just showing support because I want the Opeth reactions to keep coming (and I want your channel to grow and succeed). :D
Mikael's growls sound different on almost every album. On their first two ("Orchid" and "Morningrise") it was almost like black metal-esque shrieks. From then onwards the growls became deeper and deeper. "My Arms, Your Hearse" and "Still Life" (the song you just listened to is from this album) marked a transitionary period. For me the growls had their hayday between 2001-2005 ("Blackwater Park" to "Ghost Reveries"). The growls were at their deepest and most gutteral in "Watershed", although they lacked the pronounciation from before and felt flatter, probably because Mikael damaged his vocal chords. After 2008 Mikael never growled on a studio album for an extended period of time.
The best way to experience the guitars on still life as a whole, is to think of them like a symphonic arrangement. There are times where they are all playing together, but other times where they are playing complimentary phrases. Sometimes these phrases resolve themselves, other times they are resolved by other overlapping guitar parts. It's not unlike strings, woodwinds and brass. Still life is my favorite opeth album. This is one of my favorite songs on it. There are not many bands capable of layering harmony and melody like this.
You owe it to yourself to listen through this entire album in one continuous sitting at some point. It's a great concept album, and the songs are only enhanced in relation to each other :)
Lady L, that "high pitched thing" is a harmonic produced by slightly hitting the string with side of the pick. You have to hit it just right to get that effect. I've played guitar for years and once get the technic down, it's quite easy. Thought you'd like to know. Love your show. 😎👍
Love that you check out some less popular songs from band's discographies. Know of only one more channel who has reacted to this epic song! Glad you liked it and that the Demon isn't as off-putting anymore
Hi Lauren. I'm sorry for missing your reaction to this brilliant song from the brilliant Still Life album 2 weeks ago. Yet again another superb reaction. The 'guest demon' comment made me smile👍😆. We still have more Opeth tracks to discover and discuss 👍😆. I really love your channel and your reactions. Looking forward to your next reaction. Peace and love from Liverpool UK 👍✌️🤘☮️
I'm so glad you enjoyed this song. It's pretty epic. In my opinion, the Still Life album being a new lineup, and a new label. This is Opeths only album under Peaceville Records, the home of the Peaceville 3 ( My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, and Anathema) so I think the new lineup, and a new label had an influence on their sound, and atmosphere. Still Life is a much more well produced, and technical album than the previous Your Arms, My Hearse, which is my favorite album. But this lineup made this album that's regarded as their best, and went to a different label, made Blackwater Park and have never looked back.
@@fancotasargentina8165 , I can swap out anathema and katatonia, but yeah, that's a great trio. My Dying Bride is my favorite band, has been since the 91 ep... amazing shit
@@16dbuse Unlike many bands, My Dying Bride after morphing their music to more commercial sound (Like Gods of the Sun) and even electronic music (34788% Complete) return to their origins in their last albums, even return to the growling. I love how they can make you feel like one song is 4 different songs 17:51 this
The progressive confusion on your face is like looking in a mirror at myself witnessing the true horror of the Hindenburg as I simultaneously revel in the fire's warmth.
for the average opeth listener this album is probably mediocre, but once you understand the concept of this album and the story it tells every section that has growling in it makes sense, so does every clean singing section, hell even the instruments and the music make sense! as everything adds to the atmosphere and to the story. for instance the section where you thought there is a guest demon is where the protagonist goes on a killing spree after seeing his beloved melinda killed and laying on the floor and the instrumental "retro" section just before it is about him being in disbelief and processing what happened hence the abrupt stop and then the "harsh" transition! I encourage you to finish this album and give the lyrics more importance! great reaction btw :)
It's just one demon, but he is Legion. However, you should check out his guest demon appearance on Katatonia's Brave Murder Day album because their demon broke his throat on the last album. Fantastic vocal performance, much different than Opeth. Kind of a black metal Cure.....
Given that you’ve been listening out of order, it makes sense why you would think he sounds different, on both the harsh and clean sides. There was sort of a natural growth and improvement in his voice over the years and he wouldn’t really sound like the Mikael you know until Blackwater Park, I think.
No guest demon.. All Mikael. The Still Life album has some pretty cool layering going on. When he wasn't bored and over doing the death metal stuff, he got fairly dynamic with the growls. Highs, lows and very rarely screeches. But unfortunate to us, he became tired and bored with death metal and his voice also started to fail. So certain high styles in a growl just stopped.

That "high thing" you mention at 3:53 is a pinch harmonic. It's the same technique you hear in the intro to Slipknot's Psychosocial.
Dime bag from Pantera too. Floods guitar solo from them
