A little late, perhaps, but according to the guys at TOPS, they don't do a 90 degree spine because of the differential hardening process they use. The spine is apparently very soft-- in the 40s-- to give the blade more spring and less brittleness. Not hard enough to reliably scrape a ferro rod, even with a 90 degree edge. I wonder if they couldn't take a tip from Terava, who use a similar process but grind their spines at a slight angle to get down to the harder steel within.
Appreciate the information. Not a major deal to me because I don't use my knife for striking a ferro rod. I do love me some Terava knives though. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you for showing us the knife! At first glance it looks appealing. But: I don't like the coating, the gimping & it won't strike a ferro rod, so this propably is not the knife for me.
I am not a fan of the jimping myself but the knife feels good in the hand and has performed well. I'm glad they left the notch off the end of it. Thanks for watching.
