    Thanks! I've been using DOS, Unix and powershell for years so I knew a lot of this but the prompt command.. I can't believe I've never seen that before...

    The commands needed to install Linux?

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Open PowerShell or CMD in administrator mode, then enter 'wsl --install' (without the quotes), then restart your machine.

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Already did. Several in fact. You can find them all in my Linux playlist. The first one is: th-cam.com/video/CpTfQ-q6MPU/w-d-xo.html

    Explorer.. In cmd I use the start command. "start" opens a new cmd window on the current path. "start ." Opens explorer on the current path

    I've been using Linux for most of the past 20 years, great to see Windoze finally catching up .. a little.
    For anyone who's interested a great quick read is Neil Stephenson: In the beginning was the command line.
    :)
    Thx

    Cli is so intimidating. I'm more comfortable banging bits in dma than whatever that nonsense is. I'm hoping as the oldies that are clinging to it die off we get something more usable and less "this is the way we always done it". Problem is that I'm an oldie so I think my plan needs work.

    Prompt might not work for powershell but for powershell you can get oh-my-pwsh which is so much better

    You know, early 2021 I had a job with a credit union for all of 6 weeks before they fired me. Second time I been burned by a credit union in that exact same way. What's important about this one though, is that by that time, SSH and SFTP were implemented in cmd. Showed the guys that putty wasn't technically necessary anymore. If a termination for no good reason is the thanks I get, then I'm probably just going to keep my mouth shut during whatever probationary period my next IT job has, THEN roll out the proverbial "big guns" ... because I have a feeling the only real reason I was fired from these 2 jobs is that my supervisors felt I was too big a risk to THEIR continued employment. And whatever the next IT job might be, it will NOT be with ANY sort of financial institution.

    But when we do things on occasion like this in Linux then "Linux is so hard because you have to type things in"

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most people who say that won't be using the command line on Windows either.

    • @kychemclass5850
      @kychemclass5850 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GaryExplains Not sure, bias being what it is. Linux is 'hard' because other people said it was hard. But as you demonstrate CLI's are good no matter what the OS is :)

    I upgraded a friends computer remotely from 10 to 11.
    (updated bios to latest, bios to UEFI, mbr to gpt, secure boot, etc)
    it slapped a label on the Recovery Partition (E:\, 500mb).
    Is it safe to remove the drive letter in Disk Management if the goal is to remove it from File Manger?

    I'm in IT for about 25 years now and the day without opening a command line interface of any kind still has to come. 😅
    Fun fact. Some of my colleagues use remote desktop managers without keyboard bindings, so things like the Winkey or CTRL doesn't do anything. I really wonder how they survive without shortcuts like WIN+R, E or D or CTRL+F, Z, X, C or V for more than 10 minutes 😂
