I am so glad that Germans, Brits, Americans and plenty of other nationality love keeping vintage machines alive just because these machines are cool AND historic!!
What a fantastic way to honor your dad. At some point we will all see our lives flash before our eyes. It would be a shame if it's not worth watching. Your Father is a very lucky man. Nicely done.
I've flown in September 1987 as a passenger with this particular helicopter at the Oldtimer-Airshow Hahnweide near Stuttgart/Germany. A fantastic experience! All the best for the pilot, Mr. Bernd Hauber and his S-58, also to Mr. Eddy Brokken!
Way cool that you did that for ur dad. We did the same for mine shortly befor he passed away, It had been almost years but he flew that jet ranger like it yeasterday. Befor that a B-25 ride. Glad to see an old pilot happy. God bless from Texas.
I was stationed in Fulda Germany with the 58th Engineers at Downs Barracks from 1960 to '63 and the H-34 pilots used to let me fly with them on border patrol if there were no brass going as long as I was in uniform.I have some pics of the east german border from the copter rides on the weekends when I was able to go.This is a great video and brings back memories of the old days.Ron G
Thanks so much for putting this on. I flew a 34-d in Vietnam with the US Marine Corps and later flew the S-55 (sort of like going even back more in time in civilian life in the Canadian Arctic. Kind of rough but I always felt it would get me home. Great memories and a great sound.
This brings back a lot of memories for me. My dad was the first Sikorsky Crew Chief on the first one of these ever built. He did all the experimental tie down tests and was assigned to them for many years. He was sent to Bangkok Thailand as an adviser to the Thai Air Force on these from 1969-1971. he would lift me up into the left seat, the co-pilots seat, with the Thai pilots when they went through some of their starting procedures. Quite a thrill for a young kid.
great Great GREAT video. It is wonderful to see you n your dad getting the chance to experience the S 58 again. This video re kindles my memories to the time I took my late father back to Pearl Harbor 60 years to the day when he had the over night duty on the Tern - AM31 which was tied up across the end of 1010 pear, 2,000 feet across from the Arizona when she was destroyed along with over a 1,000 men's future........ Again Thank You
If I was the pilot in the orange suit, I would had been delighted to have this fine man on board. "Do you want me to carry you, sir? " "No, I´m fine, I used to fly one of these years ago"..."ok, you take me then!" Awesome.
a wonderfull experience it must have been :) it has come to my attention that Edgard "Eddy" Brokken has past away on December 29 ,2014. my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, may he rest in piece.
Bedankt voor het delen van deze Prachtige video , je vader moet wel emoties gehad hebben tijdens die vlucht , het geluid alleen al geeft je kriebels . thanks for sharing , regards , guido .
Sound of the 50's and early 60's actually. The S-58 was made in 1955. Born in 1960, I only remember jets and turbines by the end of that decade. Very cool video. Never heard of of these start but I've heard plenty of big 'round engines start up at the Reno Air Races. LOVE the sound.
Well, for me it’s the sound of the sixties.... :) The S-58’s/ H34’s at the base where my dad was stationed arrived in the early 60’s and were replaced by the turbine Sea Kings in the mid 70’s...
@exitbb indeed. I'm now a great fan of our belgian Sea Kings (wich belong now to the 40sth SQN Helicopter Koksijde) , but i have still mountains of respect for the Siko Pilots. Hope your father enjoyed his flight.
My dad was a mechanic on, (i don't know what model) 60's tho', one time they had an oil pump go out on a cross country flight. they set down in a clearing in the woods, my dad had along his Lambretta motor scooter. he hops into the nearest town and calls the base to send out a new oil pump and the change it in the field and resume their flight. Got pics somewhere
@galaxiesaver this once was a bleigna helicopter of the 40th sqn Searc And Rescue in Koksijde (Belgium). It was painted in this german colours for a movie.
The S-58 or H-34 Uh-34 is an early helicopter and is Sikorsky's last piston engine powered helicopter as most in Vietnam now have been reduced to scrap but were restorable. this still has the original wright R-1820-84 radial engine but then again in the 1970s these were converted to turbine power and have good lifting capacity. as this S-58 in piston engine form one of them someday may be aquired by Kermit Weeks in USA for his Fantisy of Flight collection in Polk city Florida. as he collects aircraft and helicopters up to the 1950s as the S-58 was made in the 50s some of them which is a larger version of the Sikorsky S-55 H-19 chickasaw.
For as cool as turbine engines are, and as much power they produce...they will never have the heart warming sound of a good, old fashioned radial engine. Starting a turbine sounds like strangling a cat...starting a radial is like waking up a lion.
there is some S-58s that remain in the world ferring passengers cherry tree drying, and other tasks it performs. as few remain with their wright cyclone 9 r-1820 9 cylinder radial engine 1525 horsepower. some in the 1970s were converted to turbine power using two P&W pt-6 turbine engines or twin pack. as this helicopter saw service in vietnam as many remain derlict or scrapped in vietnam. many airworthy s-58 H-34 choctaws remain airworthy mainly in the United States. either airworthy or on static displays in museums.
Civil version, built in1958 to become N869 for Chicago Helicopter Airways. Then to Sabena Belgium as OO-SHP. After that to Belgian Airforce as B-15 / OT-ZKP vip helicopter. In 1978 to Meravo Luftreederei GmbH in Oedheim.
How can people name this ugly? I just don't get it! This thing is amazing looking. I mean, when you call the H21 flying banana ugly, I can understand your opinion but this machine? Its one of the best looking in the world in my opinion!
Great Video, thanks for sharing! I'm flying with Bernd Hauber in the same air sports club and also had the joy of flying with the Sikorsky. Have you and your father seen the german movie "Die Sturmflut" in which Bernd is flying the Sikorsky in the flood of Hamburg - as he did several years ago?
More like the sound of the fifties...the first turbine helicopter flew in 1951, and the first production turbine chopper, the Bell UH 1 Huey, first flew in 1956.
most H-34’s in the US and other military were retired in the early 1970’s.. Also , if you look at the early US space flights (Mercury in the early 60’s), the recovery of the capsule was done by H34’s
I loved the old Sikorskys, I remember watching them fly over the Hollywood house where I grew up. The The big radial-powered rotors made a "tokka-tokka" sound that felt powerful to a 5 year old boy living in the Hollywood hills in the 1950s
+Cielo Pachirisu : yes, there´s only a few left (in flying conditions) of the piston "variant" or better said the original... There are probably more around with the "upgraded" turbine version...
Great for your father. I have been doing my military duty at the 40sth squadron in BKOK. Still remembering the sound of this workhorse.
It is always great to see a pilot reunited with an aircraft ! Great video !

My all time favorite helicopter. The shape and style, plus that big radial engine, can’t get any better than that😊😊
If I was the pilot in the orange suit, I would had been delighted to have this fine man on board. "Do you want me to carry you, sir? " "No, I´m fine, I used to fly one of these years ago"..."ok, you take me then!" Awesome.
Truely amazing, for him to get the chance to go for one more flight!! Inspirering
Trés jolie vidéo, bel hommage aux anciens que l'on ne doit pas oublier ...
ooh thank you for share this story, what a Honor to see this two retired Captains flight their utility aircraft together again

Back from Vietnam and in the Missouri National Guard we had 34's but they very soon were replaced with Hueys. We missed the noise of the recip!!!

My Dad flew in these as a medic in the Army in 1962
My dad was a mechanic on, (i don't know what model) 60's tho', one time they had an oil pump go out on a cross country flight. they set down in a clearing in the woods, my dad had along his Lambretta motor scooter. he hops into the nearest town and calls the base to send out a new oil pump and the change it in the field and resume their flight. @seakinglover1 yes, from around 1964 until 1973...i think it was called the Heli-Flight back then.
Very nice video
I have sat int the cockpit of one of those - it's like sitting in the middle of an engine room.

Wow, I still remembering this Helicopter when I was little boy during the Vietman War.
Der war im Film "Die Sturmflut" zu sehen! Der Film weckte mein interresse für diesen Helicopter!

beauty!
I am glad your father got to go for another flight. Pretty cool! Did he take the controls at all during the flight?
super
well done Very nice!!!!
@jimpeoples1
yes he did a little bit, at the end of the video you can hear the pilot say (in German) that my father still remembers how to fly...
How can people name this ugly? I just don't get it! This thing is amazing looking. I mean, when you call the H21 flying banana ugly, I can understand your opinion but this machine? Its one of the best looking in the world in my opinion!
lucky old duffer, good for him :)
hello well done thanks God speed
Reminds me of the sound of old farm trucks in the 60's.
With no prop to "pull through", How did pilots clear the run down oil from the bottom cylinders, prior to start-up?
What’s the name of this song you used Bruno it’s lovely
Great Video, thanks for sharing! I'm flying with Bernd Hauber in the same air sports club and also had the joy of flying with the Sikorsky. Have you and your father seen the german movie "Die Sturmflut" in which Bernd is flying the Sikorsky in the flood of Hamburg - as he did several years ago?
@penquinbum we salute you great sir..
Look how light it is on the controls pilot flying it with 2 fingers
Was your father a pilot at the 40sth squadron?
Hello, I would like to buy one, can you help me, how much is it, how many people you can afford, and how many kilometers you travel
Does anyone could give me the title of this amazing song?
Is this AC still flying? Last pictures/movies I can find online are dated 2011 and back.
More like the sound of the fifties...the first turbine helicopter flew in 1951, and the first production turbine chopper, the Bell UH 1 Huey, first flew in 1956.

What engine powers this helicopter?
Is this related to the aircraft Museum in Munich?
not sure, you can check with the owners, Meravo helicopters in Germany
Sehr schönes Video.Besonders die on-board-cam.Thanx
@G2GPavehawk : That´s exactly how it feels on board of this helicopter.... : )
I’d recognize that sound anywhere.
By 'One of the Last in the World', you mean of the Piston variant, right? Because, the S-58t is still used somewhat often in the US by civilians.
+Cielo Pachirisu : yes, there´s only a few left (in flying conditions) of the piston "variant" or better said the original...
There are probably more around with the "upgraded" turbine version...
How rare are these things? I saw one at a navy base rusting away and getting parts used off of it
ADF Helicopters in Brewester Wa, has ten of them. All flying, used for drying cherries.
hekicoptero da minha adolescencia
3:56 ganz lässig... sehr schönes video
This heli is great… one of my favorites. But the music sounds like a skin-a-max soft-core adult movie.!!! But the video is cool. 🚁
next time I’ll make sure I put music you like…
