    The “quest” for out-of-production magazines can be a major pain. I inherited a Colt M1903 (1908) “hammerless” (internal hammer) cambered in .380 ACP. It was dad’s “normal” EDC while he was an FBI Agent (not his Bureau issued sidearm), and I cherish it. Years ago, I found a wholesaler that sold Colt OEM mags, I purchased about five or six, most are still in their wrappers, and I am VERY glad to have them.

    I’m guessing s&w contracted an outside manufacturer to create the mags back in the day and United defense continued to create the magazines for whatever reason. Doesn’t the South Korean military use a gun that accepts those mags?

    • @williamorights4374
      @williamorights4374 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes - Daewoo Industries. Also, the Lionheart compact which is actually an upgraded Deawoo will accept S&W 69 series 12 round mags. Lionheart mags are only 10 rounds and will not fully seat in the S&W. I have an LH9C and an S&W 6904, both are excellent. I bought a couple of the Keep Shooting stainless mags and they function well in both guns.

    I've found that Lionheart compact magazines will work in the 6900 guns as well--I bought a brand new Lionheart 10-rounder last year and it seems to work perfectly in my 6904. Again, they're 10 rounders unfortunately (not 12), but Daewoo/Lionheart basically copied the Smith 2nd/3rd gen mag design... so they work. Apparently.

    Very Interesting! On a lot of my usual sources for Magazines, the metal framed S&W Pistol Magazines are either no longer available or shown as "Out of Stock", so a new source of magazines for these fine Pistols is very very Welcome! It should also be noted that Wolff Gunsprings still makes and stocks Magazine Springs for these Pistols. You have to dig a bit through their website to find them, but they are still listed. I highly recommend their +5% Strength Magazine Springs for all 9mm Pistols.

  • @mr.goldenrod291
    @mr.goldenrod291 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Any box-feed semi-automatic greatest weakness is the magazine. Without one, the gun is basically useless. Given that the 59 and 69 (and similar) series were the most common law enforcement pistols used only 20-40 years ago, there should be plenty of magazines available. But like many gun components, the ones available are commanding high prices. It’s good to know there are other sources for the magazines.
    Which brings up one of my firearms gripes - new guns that don’t use the previous version’s magazine. I know there are design changes in guns, and the manufacturer seeks to maximize profits, but having an upgrade path allowing the user to interchange magazines would be handy. Another option is to base a magazine on an established standard, such as Glock or Berretta. Doing so also makes the pistol caliber carbine more desirable. I’d buy a Ruger PCC if it used S&W M&P or 59/69 series magazines.

    Thanks HR. I actually own a 469 I purchased back in 1985 I believe. It was my first semi-auto pistol and to date the only 9mm in my collection. I haven't qualified wiy it for carry in years. It was my first off-duty. My Gen 2 Glock 23 replaced it in the early 90's and is what I carried the remainder of my career. Thanks for sourcing mags. What I don't understand is this. There are companies in Turkey, Brazil, Italy, Spain and Serbia that make copies of the Beretta 92, the CZ-75 and 97, and Sig P22x series (all famous DA/SA pistols). In many cases these copies are VERY good to excellent. WHY oh WHY has nobody produced a clone of the Smith and Wesson 2nd and 3rd gens? Especially Taurus. I mean come on, they practically copy everything S&W makes in terms of revolvers (they are actually S&W's bastard child).

    I just purchased one magazine for my 6906. At first glance it appears absolutely identical to the factory magazines, suggesting strongly that the original tooling is being used. However I did find some issues that make it, at least initially, unsuitable for the task at hand.
    With the slide forward, the empty magazine will not lock into place when inserted. It can be pulled right out again. With considerable effort it can be locked in place, but then it is exerting upward force against the slide and the slide won’t move without great effort.
    With the slide locked back, the loaded magazine does install normally, and the gun feeds and cycles just fine. It locks the slide back on the last round every time.
    Inserting and withdrawing the magazine has a lot of grittiness and dragging. Examination of the magazine body after just a handful of uses revealed a deep witness mark, a scar caused by the magazine catch. The magazine is made of an interior, softer metal than the originals which is already showing premature signs of wear.
    It remains to be seen if I will be able to make this magazine work. It’s possible that filing the top of the mag catch hole will let it sit slightly lower. But if I was to buy another mag I would spend the extra money for a used factory mag rather than buying another one of these.

I put a set of nice Pachmeyer rubber grips on it and bought a couple of extra factory magazines for it. I don't think I ever fired it. I see a number of these on GB that are CHP turn ins for about $700. Mine is pristine and I probably even have the box and paperwork for it. My inventory is too big and I'm thinking of selling this fine pistol. Do you know what a fair price would be? I know this not really the platform for this question but I know you are knowledgeable in this area and now know you have an interest in these guns. As an aside I bought a model 39 single stack 9mm when I was in college many years ago. It's long gone but was a very nice pistol.
    Thank you and thanks for all the information you share with us.

      The 3rd Gen prices are going up, but the 4006 suffers a bit from the current bias against that cartridge. I suppose somewhere in the $700-850 range is about right. Truthfully, if you’re somewhere near northern Ohio, I might be interested in it.

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s possible but it’s not easy or particularly safe to do so. The best way to go about it is to keep the chamber empty until your ready to shoot. Then you can just hand cycle the slide and fire the pistol in S/A mode. That model was really intended to fire the first shot D/A and then S/A afterwards.

      @hrfunk One more question: So I haven't shot it yet and you mentioned the rarity of these magazines, yet I heard that many are dysfunctional and cuase jams. Is that true? I was told by my dealer that this is a very reliable firearm.

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nocturnalrecluse1216 In my experience, the 3rd Generation S&W pistols were very reliable (so we’re the first and second generations for that matter). At this point, however, they have been out of production for nearly 2 decades. Springs degrade with use. Magazines that have been repeatedly dropped, stepped on, etc can become damaged/defective, and various parts can break. If you know how to evaluate these pistols and their components, it’s possible to identify some very good pistols. Lacking such knowledge, it’s possible to encounter problematic functioning. Individuals who call these pistols “unreliable” probably fall into the latter group.

    I have a Model 6904 which was my back up plainclothes duty gun for 19 years. I have an even dozen S&W 12 round mags for it. (I am not interested in 10 round after market mags). I have purchased 4 original S&W mags over the past couple years, most recently 2 mags for $30 each on Gunbroker. But I have seen them offered for up to $70. They can be hard to find, to be sure.
    If you can get reliable 12 round mags for $30/new, then buy a stack of them!
    There were various magazine baseplates produced over different periods of manufacture. Some collectors get obsessive about having the right one for their handgun's serial number range. I don't. In fact, one of my mags is a stainless for a 6906. They all work fine.
    These are great guns and my primary carry gun is still a S&W 3914 DAO.

    Chief,
    I was at the local GS yesterday and noticed they had about nine 5906s. After watching your video on the 5906s and this video last night I took another look this afternoon. These were all police trade-ins. All were stainless steel. The valuations varied between $399 and 425 with one creampuff model commanding $467. I don't know how they arrived at the valuations. I did notice they had a heavy trigger pull on the double action. Single action seemed fine. Each pistol comes with one magazine. I am certain you have insights; this is the first time I've actually looked closely at a 59 series. My concern is whether a local gunsmith can work on these pistols and magazine availability. Checking into the gunsmith to see if he knows about these pistols. Most of them had blemishes of one kind or another but I can't speak to the internals. All were clean. Some of the serial numbers were in near sequential order.

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first thing I’ll tell you is the 5906 was overbuilt for a 9mm. The only real downside to them is their weight. If I were you, I would select the nicest one of the group, pay the price, and run out the door before anyone changes their mind.
      The D/A pull is heavy on these pistols, but it is smooth. The pull weight is intentional to prevent the first shot from being inadvertently fired due to a “startle response”. It is similar to the pull of a D/A revolver. The S/A pull is light and clean.
      The 5906 is also a very reliable pistol with virtually any ammunition. About the only thing you need to do is swap out the recoil spring every 5000 rounds (Smith also recommended swapping out the firing pin spring and the trigger spring at that same interval, but I think they are less crucial).
      Regarding magazines, factory new mags are available from Mec Gar. You can also find Smith&Wesson mags at gun shows.
      In short, if you purchase a 5906, I don’t think you’ll regret it.

      @@hrfunk agree with all of this, love all my 3rd gens my TSW5906 and my pair of 6906s are my favorites in that group. The 5906 IS a heavy beast as they are ALL stainless though like you said, super heavy for a 9mm today but you could probably use it as a hammer for years and have it still function when needed. My CHP 4006 is also sweat and I wish I could easily swap one of my 6906s over to it's decock only lever vs the decocker/safety that they have standard (returns to fire as soon as you release after decock)
