You nailed it when you said BM put it all into image quality. Having owned a P4K I can confirm it can be used successfully for many things including youtube if you set up and plan properly. It's not for your average user that I would agree but to the discerning and skillful user a lot can be acheived with minimal accessorising if image quality means everything. The image is sublime!! Skin tones and colour science is amazing. The trick is to get it caged, rig up with a power pack and get a light weight monitor. This is all you need to add enough weight to hand hold and cancel out most jitter. The footage can then be quickly stabilised in post if you feel it needs it but for a lot of shots it's not necessary. With mine I bought a crane 3 gimbal and I honestly found it more trouble that it was worth balancing, the weight, batteries, chargers etc.
So with BM if all you do is youtube and hobby the trick is to keep it rigged minimally. When hand holding with practice you get good at focus pulling and working with the focus peaking. The monitor I had was an atomos shinobi and it transformed the focusing capabilities for me and made it useable in the brightest daylight outside.
Imo, if featutes like autofocus, focus tracking, ibis, small form factor are important my recommendation would be the fuji xt4. The video imo is the next best to BM for the money and is also a highly capable stills camera too.

Hey man. I've been watching your crazy ass since the Thailand days, and I absolutely love the content you put out. You totally nailed it with the usability of the BMPCC4K, It is such a colossal pain to setup, and learn to use. But when you figure out how to work with RAW footage, it is an absolute dream to work with. I mainly shoot Real Estate and I can literally walk through a house with very little setup and little care for the "perfect" exposure because I can quickly get in and out of a job site and fix it in post!

For blackmagic cinema cameras, they offer good low noise amplifiers and higher bit rates and bit depth for recording. The only issue is that they optimize it to work within a limited ISO range, where they essentially tune the analog amplifier and ADC to prioritize dynamic range so that you maintain editing flexibility.
Not all camera makers do that, e.g., you may see some internal signal path choices that result in no ability to recover shadows at high ISO (where any attempts to boost it, simply amplifies the noise more than anything else.
Others may choose an overly high analog gain that will allow for better shadow recovery, but then you have no control over highlights in post. Every camera maker has their own secret method of managing the signal path, which is how you can see multiple cameras with the same sensor but they can perform differently in low light. Sadly when camera makers further develop their firmware, they never push for improvements to analog aspects of the signal in terms of how gain is applied.
In any camera, due to limitations in technology, the working range of an ADC is always much smaller than the working range of a low noise amplifier. e.g., you may have an ADC that clips at any signal above 1200mv or below 400mv, and thus your 14 or 16bit ADC will be representing equal steps between 400 and 1200mv. While the sensor 0-2000mv, and it is up to the camera to manage the signal path to ensure the the most relevant part of the analog aspect of the signal is within the sweet spot of the working range of the input of the ADC.
Usually camera makers can reuse a sensor and get better results with new generations of camera simply from improving the algorithms in how the signal path is managed, especially with better characterization of the analog aspects, e.g., if a camera maker decides that at certain ISO ranges, you are less likely to need the full input range of the ADC, then they can add a sliver of separation between the desired signal and noise floor of the LNA, and then have the ADC toss out that noise floor while preserving as much of the low gain information in the analog signal as possible, though at the risk of easier clipping in the highlights.

Another MFT mount camera that often gets forgotten is the JVC LS300. Like the Black Magic it is all about cinematic goodness rather than easy usability, but it is much loved by those who do use it. There is a lot about the MFT universe that gets overlooked. For me it is the most interesting of all formats with plenty to offer indie filmmakers in the way of creative options. In many ways it is like 16mm back in the film days. 35mm got all the lust and respect, but meanwhile, it was the 16mm Bolex guys who were doing much of the really interesting low budget stuff where being clever with limited resources counted for more than having the big expensive cameras and big crews and big budgets. 16mm often gets overlooked in a similar way to MFT, but I know where I like to be.

IBIS, 4k-8k, great AF, and high frame rates all became commonly available on prosumer cameras over the last couple of years but for the 7-10 years before that people were doing just fine making HQ engaging videos with t3i's, 5d2's, and 60d's. everyone looking for the perfect camera and switching systems left and right but i started off with canon since 2010 and my last canon body was a 6D2. ive since added a GH5, FUJI X100F, & BMPCC 6k and now A7S3. everytime i bought a new camera i debated selling older gear to pay off the new gear but after considering the return i'd get on my bodies and lenses, i felt keeping them provided more value, whether it be my DSLR's for photography as they are my only full frame cameras and reliable, or GH5 for the portability and outstanding IBIS when i need to be as mobile as possible and have 4k60p capability, or the X100F for just being the aesthetic inspirational camera that it is, to the BMPCC for its cinematic image. im probably in the minority of photographers/videographers that has literally no brand preference and just want to use the tool i find most efficient and enjoyable to use for any particular application. no such thing as perfection in the camera world, always a compromise.

    • @NickZukin
      @NickZukin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You just repeated everything he said in a less entertaining way except got the pricing wrong. The A7siii doesn't need a gimbal because it has solid IBIS. To rig out a BMPCC will cost you $1300 for the camera + $200 for the cage and rig + $300 for the gimbal + $600 for the monitor + $150 for the vmount battery and rig mount + $200 for the follow focus. That's $2750 and probably about 4 or 5 lbs added weight. And you still won't have autofocus or the shallow depth of field or the low light capabilities of the A7siii. And you won't be able to take stills in any meaningful way. And if you shoot in the rain you'll probably ruin your BMPCC because it's not weather sealed.

    • @JohnAmaro_Official
      @JohnAmaro_Official 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@NickZukin what? so you dont need a gimbal with a7siii ? what are you talking about ? of course you need a gimbal with any camera!
Cage and monitor are optional..Black magic pocket has a build in monitor..which is even bigger than the one on a7siii
Cinema cameras do not come with autofocus and most cinematographers do not like or use autofocus..Only youtubers & amateurs prefer autofocus!
"You wont have the shallow depth of field" ....thats all about the lens you will choose to use and has nothing to do with the camera! Same applies for any camera!
As about weather sealed it doesnt mean that you can just go in the rain with sony a7siii and film and everything will be ok because its weather sealed..you still have to protect your camera!

i will never choose compressed h264 over RAW whatever sony has to offer, the film look the depth of colors. the camera choice depends on what you are. if you are a vlogger then go for sony, but if you are a serious filmaker then go for bm. lots of cinematographers uses bm dont complain about what you said we just dont care about it. everybody should respect everyone for their camera choices

BMPCC 6k is APS-C, not sure which one Gerald has now. This is not vlogging camera, just entry level cinema camera you can rig up. You can for sure do studio vlogs with it. Focus can be pulled either via Tilta nucleus nano or manual follow focus with whip if you want to film yourself. But with F1.8 lens on APS-C (which is ~F/2.8 on FF taking in mind BMPCC 6k crop ratio) you can be in focus even if you move a bit (you got around 8cm of focus plain). You can also focus BMD cameras using ATEM Mini switcher :). I thought Sony A6xxx/A7XX HLG is really nice quality picture, but when compared with BMD BRAW it looks like s..t :). Definitely A7S3 is better for vlogging outside, inside BMPCC 6k creates much better image than your combo from this video.

Hey man, I think that these two cameras are meant for different things. The Pocket 4k is meant for budget cinematographers who make films while the A7Siii is meant for Sony fanboys, wedding videographers, vloggers (if you want overkill it), maybe even short film makers but not cinematographers. Everything on the Pocket 4k makes sense for a cinematographer. However, point taken in the usability section, it sucks. I left mine on my shelf until I was ready to film, for everything else I had the Panasonic G9, because the G9 was great for everything else, and as far as I am concerned, great IQ. For TH-cam the Pocket 4k doesn't make sense and I guess in many situations but for what it was designed for, I don't think that I prefer another camera.

Your statement regarding simplicity and the want of the Sony FDR-X4000...Thumbs up and a new subscriber for you!
True, I had to initially put a Thumbs Down for the video (even though I didn't want to) and then unsubscribe so I subscribe again, but you deserved a new subscriber with that statement!! (And for using the Holy Grail of Cameras today...Mighty impressed!)

I have a Black Magic 4k and a 1DX mark ii. I only use the BMPCC4K and a tripod and for audio. The 1 DX is for close up and b-roll. The 1DX has amazing auto focus and colors. NO c-log and it's heavy. I've been considering trading in both for a A7S iii.

    I agree with you. I have a BMPCC and a canon t3i.
I much prefer using the T3i cuz it’s much straightforward. The BMPCC takes so much effort, and I only use it when I actually have time to prepare for the shoot and set up for tripod and mics and extra time to fiddle with the settings.

But i don't remember Blackmagic ever mentioning this camera for vloggers. What was the need of this video? There is a world beyond vloggers. Also, why the hell someone should buy a 5000 CAD camera just for vlogging. A7S iii is great camera but you don't need it for vlogging.

Actually, the way lot of people calling A7Siii as great vlogging camera makes me think that Sony is paying many people to target vloggers to but it. Fir vloggers canon rp, a6500, g85 are great enough.

@@HrPedrosak true, its to get views. It is easy to find faults in any product. But reality is everyone have different needs. Like Lumix s5 is a great budget FF hybrid camera if you can manual focus. May be a used xt3 might be best and cheap camera for vlogging.

Camera Conspiracy - why i never talked about Blackmagic cameras. well i am a vlogger not a film maker and BMPCC cameras are not for vlogging, i also can't do manual focus while making videos. but for Cinema/Narrative work image quality is amazing.

Haha I have a BMPCC4K and I'm really happy with it (except for battery lifetime) but mostly cause I don't shoot myself xD I actually like manual focusing and having control hehe but yeah I used to have a sony a6300 with a sony 50mm and autofocus was really good for gimbal work. I didnt like the colors much though. And about the dynamic range of the m4/3 I don't know the exact technical details but the fact that black magic manufactures and develops their own technology for the sensors is really amazing. Their colour science is really top notch.

  • @enregistreur

Nah, Blackmagic cameras are fine for vlogging.
You just need to add the following to your kit while filming:
    - camera operator (for framing) + camera assistant (for reloading the batteries between takes)
    - focus puller (to stay in focus, duh)
    - sound engineer/boom operator (for sound monitoring and ambient sound mix)
    - gimball operator (to have stable images, duh)
    - DIT (to manage the enormous data throughput through the day)
    ...
And as bonus you may need
    - color grading artist (to get the best colors for your vlogs)
    - logistics manager/driver (to get the crew what it needs/where it's needed)
    - catering (of course)
    ...
Or you could go the Gerald way with this very conspicuous contraption.
    *But that looks less convenient.*

Is there room in this world for passenger cars and 18 wheeled trucks? Can we see the need for each? Blackmagic knows their users and they use external stabilization, monitors, focus controllers, external batteries, professional audio, timecode, studio switchers, etc.

I think shooting in a RAW format allows more room for error. However, it can also be at the cost of extra time in post. But cinema cameras require entirely different equipment and shooting styles.

Followed you for years brotha love this channel. But I just think all cameras have their uses. For instance. A Pocket 4k/6k camera would be perfect for your talking in your office shots. Like this video is. As a studio/don't take it anywhere camera. Don't really need "usability" for videos like this. So it can literally just stay on a tripod permanently in your office space. I'm pretty sure now at your level you can definitely afford a the permanent setup. Dedicated screen nearby just off camera etc. I mean that sounds simple to me imo. A dedicated setup, you literally just turn on the lights and hit record.

Agreed: usability and fund to use is really important. I wonder if you've ever tried m43 with a SpeedBooster? You might get the toneh-glory you're looking for... but does it autofocus well (in videomode)? There are many different ones - Metabones considered the best. Time for a test of those vs the cheaper ones? Checked with Camera Canada - no speedbooster in their store. Does speedbosters exist in Canada at all? Are they illegal to use? Too much boosting of the speed?
