Why you NEED to AVOID Pai, Thailand | Mae Hong Son Loop 2024

  • In this video we hit the road on a rental motorbike and head North of Chiang Mai to the first stop on the Mae Hong Son loop, Pai. Quickly our trip takes an unexpected turn when we stumble across an A330 plane at the side of the road, where we grab a coffee before riding the winding mountain road to the backpacker town of Pai. We grab food at a cat cafe, see the white buddha and see what burning season is really like as it kicks off in the region. While we really enjoyed being in Pai, and the giant white buddha was absolutely stunning, it's clear that burning season is not a time to come to Pai if you want to see it in its full, gorgeous, glory.

    Thanks for another awesome video. The temple looked so pretty! So sad about the smoke. In Canada wildfires happen in the summer (though many of these are human caused), in some recent years there were weeks when you could barely see to the end of the street for the smoke. It really affects your physical and mental health when you can’t see the sky and the sun turns red! Excited to see the rest of your trip on the bike!

    A lot of my Mum's British friends have been recommending Pai to her but I don't think it's quite her thing, it just looks like Pattaya in the mountains to me 😅 that being said the hot springs and nature spots do look really nice up there so maybe one day we'll visit 😊

    • @AlwaysAway
      @AlwaysAway  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I’ve heard a lot of people say stuff about it being similar to party places in the south. Tbh it felt like being back home there were barely any Thai’s on sight and everyone was just drinking or smoking the green stuff now that it’s legal 😅 but then there was a lot of great stuff to see too, I’d say it’s worth a visit! But don’t go too out the way for it 😅

    Burning season sounds a lot like wildfire season in the statets. In CO, it's definitetly like that.

    • @AlwaysAway
      @AlwaysAway  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah it must be pretty similar, though here the fires are usually man made. It could be largely prevented through using machinery instead sadly but it’s expensive and the slash burn method costs nothing for farmers

  • @bartekkubicaku-bitsa9802
    @bartekkubicaku-bitsa9802 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    O yes, mini map on the intro! 💪 :) This town looks lovely and wild at the same time❤. This Burning season looks like hell, this shows some differences in culture and the need to spread knowledge. Here in Poland burning fields is illegal and heavily punished, but we had massive problem with it for years. Add to that the worst air quality in the EU and you can understand why most of the kids have asthma and other respiratory problems. I hope Thailand will understand this quickly.

    • @AlwaysAway
      @AlwaysAway  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha knew I had to get the map in! It took ages to work out how to do it though 😂😂 yeah it’s pretty horrendous, unfortunately it’s been common practise for hundreds of years and while they try to discourage it, the machinery needed to do it without burning is unaffordable to a lot of farmers so they’re stuck doing it, someone I spoke to said last year they started getting nosebleeds from it it was so bad 😣 hopefully it doesn’t get much worse! Good on Poland for banning it though, people shouldn’t have to suffer their health because of it 😞

    Wat Prathat Doi Suthep and practically all temples in the North, Northeast (Isan) and in Laos as well have two Nagas (mythical serpent-like beast living underworld) guarding the steps leading into the temple. It is believed that Naga King is the underworld ruler and is a devout Buddhist disciple. Thus, sometimes you can see an image of Buddha meditating under the tree with Naga King guarding behind with his 7 heads above Buddha's head to protect him from wind/rain. There are also standalone Naga statute along Meking River on both sides of Thailand and Laos, the most famous of which is at Nakhon Phanom with 7 heads. It might be noted that one of the largest royal barge of Thai King has 7-heads Naga as its head. The mortal enemy of Naga is Garuda (a mythical flying beast) which is supposed to be God Rama's mount. Indonesia and Thailand deem Garuda as high class mythical beast and Indonesia's National Carrier is "Garuda". Garuda is also the official symbol of Thai King, thus official document would have Garuda symbol at its head. When there is an official royal announcement from the King or Palace, the initial TV screen features Garuda for a minute before the royal text appears together with reading sound.

    • @AlwaysAway
      @AlwaysAway  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you! 💖 It’s the cheapest and easiest way to remove crop biowaste from the fields and a lot of farmers aren’t able to get the necessary machinery that’ll do it without burning. I believe the government has tried to offer incentives to stop farmers doing it but it’s just such common practise it’s hard to get change to happen. And yeah I think that just be it, it must spread from the farms most of the time 😞

    Thank you for explaining what "burning season" is. I've heard you mention it before and was not sure what it was. We have something similar here in Tennessee, but on a much smaller scale, when they dry out the tobacco. • @AlwaysAway
      @AlwaysAway  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In Thailand there is a lot of animal cruelty and a different attitude to animals, you’ll see a lot of emaciated animals with patches of fur missing, although the ginger kitty needed a good brush these guys were all pet cats from the house behind the cafe, I saw them wandering in and out, and these cats were definitely looked after I promise! The black and white cat we played with a lot because he kept coming over for belly rubs, he was really sociable and friendly. The ginger cat had a grumpy face but he kept curling up for naps in the cushions and chairs and seemed pretty happy albeit a bit scruffy. There is an altogether different view towards pets here, for example a lot of people won’t even let their pets come in the house and they have to live outside and you come across a lot of unhappy, not looked after animals which is really upsetting, I didn’t feel like these guys were unhappy or not looked after otherwise I would’ve definitely called it out ♥️
