I live the closest to the Amtrak line that goes through Galesburg and stayed there for a night last summer. A month ago, I saw the delayed California Zephyr train to Chicago that was about 13 hours behind schedule that was stopped for about more than an hour on the Galesburg virtual rail fan camera and I saw it in Naperville in person after 2:30 am, the second to last stop before Chicago. A BNSF locomotive towed it, I believe there was a mechanical failure and what was special about the train was that it had a brand new alc 42 charger in a heritage paint scheme, 301.
@@markfryer9880 I believe it had to be on the capitol limited the day after it was supposed to depart for Washington D.C. If the Amtrak was on time in Naperville, I would’ve had to miss it because I was at work.

Hi from Green Bay. The steam locomotive in Galesburg also has 2 passenger cars. The1st behind the tender was here at the National Railroad Museum until 1987 when the Board sold it to Galesburg, and it was shipped on its own wheels on the C&NW to Chicago, and B.N. to Galesburg, then restored. Here in G.B. it was 1 of 6 cars donated in 1971 when CBQ stopped passenger trains when Amtrak started. The cars are the R.P.O., and baggage, and Dynamometer test car, and N.P. Baggage1594 but scrapped by museum , and G.N. sleeper 1269 POPLAR RIVER. This car is number 1945 and a unique Combination Car with a RPO. section and the other section for the R.E.A. They have these in Spokane Washington that’s how they move cars in the yard getting ready for long haul. The conductor has a remote on his chest that controls train .

My wife was born in Galesburg, and still has family there. Her grandpa worked for the CB&Q, and an uncle for the Santa Fe. There's a large yard south of the station; you were watching the yard job do its work. Not many residences nearby, but yes, the gates and bells can be annoying. There are underpasses north and south of that crossing. The Amtrak you viewed was the Southwest Chief -- it has been running with the baggage car on the rear, while the California Zephyr has been running it right behind the locomotives.
Bizarre loco! And remote control? Hmmmmmmm. Can’t say I am liking that so much. Thanks for the trip to another neat place! Looks like Chessie wanted to chase your gorgeous horse!
BN 54 started its life as an SD9, before it was rebuilt into TEBC6 slug. It's one of only two such slugs equipped with dynamic brakes, (formerly) for use at Cherokee Yard in Tulsa, OK. BNSF decided to use the BN reporting mark for some of its slugs.

Our long trains can be a drag but overall cargo freight trains in the US are way cooler. Second place would probably be Russian, Chinese, or Indian freight trains. European freight is kinda boring, though your passenger rail systems are very advanced and very cool. It is not for a lack of engineering or technology that we don't have good passenger rail here in the US. It is because of low demand, poor regulation, right of way issues, and lack of governmental support. Oh and cost is a huge issue here too. That's why freight mainlines have remained diesel electric. I think Europeans often have poor understanding of just how expansive the US truly is, and we move far more freight over the rails than on semi trucks (far more efficient). We use semi trucks here for special cargo, shorter distances and to cover in between freight rail coverage, last mile delivery, and so forth.
Galesburg yard is always busy and it quite awesome to see some of the power they have sitting around plus you were about an 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours from my hometown of Fort Madison, IA where a lot of train traffic comes through on it's way through Galesburg

Three axle trucks on that switcher. All in fresh paint. Looks like they were taking a main line and backing it into the yard, then breaking it down. Hello to Shoestring.
A lot of frac sand hoppers on that train. The AOKX, etc next to the high cube boxcars are frac sand hoppers. Quite a few of those cars come through here heading to Pennsylvania. We used to have a road slug on the RSR, until about 6 years ago when it and it's mother were transferred to the BPRR. That one still looked like a GP9 though, with just the intakes removed. Once I have heard the NS local come down with a mother/slug set, they had to leave cars behind because the pair didn't have the tractive force to take all the cars to Buffalo.
I guess you meant to say SD9 -- it's a six-axle unit. But are you confusing GP/SD9s with SW9s? Because that loco doesn't look anything like a GP/SD9. Those have full-height long hoods, and a short hood ahead of the cab. The loco does look quite a lot like an SW9 (with the low long hood and the switcher-style cab right at the end of the locomotive) but that's not what it was before becominga slug.
The weird looking thing is a TEBC6 slug, as others have mentioned. I saw one in Seattle a few years back, minus the dynamic brakes and "BN" lettering. I believe they are built from SD7 or 9 frames with an SW-something cab. From what I've heard, they are all getting repainted to have the "BN" reporting mark (I've also heard of some older locomotives getting relabeled as "GN" just prior to retirement) in order to free up "BNSF" numbers for new locomotives.
Okay that is weird normally a train is driven by an engineer but to be remote controlled now that sounds like a kid playing with a very expensive and dangerous peice of equipment when put at the wrong speed - good video jawtooth this was a awesome one and by the way good views on the steam locomotive
The remote control is only used when switching. Out on the road, it's driven from the cab in the usual way. Nothing particularly dangerous about remote controlling them -- they'll only be allowed to do it within line of sight and so on. Remember that DPUs are driven by remote control, too: they receive commands from the lead engine by radio link.
Nice action at Galesburg, Illinois Jaw Tooth. From what I found on the Internet, those TEBC6 slugs date back to at lealslt 2007 when BNSF built them from old SD9s. That remote controlled train certainly was a long train working the yard at Galesburg, Illinois. Thank you for documenting this action and for uploading it for us!
The Pasco hump yard used to have those for the hump and trim jobs, they liked to operate the consist from the cab of the TEB6C because it's quieter. But wait there's more.

If you watch close you can get a glimpse of the engineer when backing through the intersection and again when passing the Ottumwa Sub sign, you can see him get up and go to the other side of the cab. At 17:22 you can see him return to his seat facing the direction of travel.

im a trucker driver and i get loaded at a local railraod in gastonia North Carolina called piedmont and northern railroad and they use that exact locomotive. Idk what its called but i think local shortline railroads use them. the engineer says its very powerful but fuel efficient. i actual got to ride on it while they switched cars around to load me. it was pretty freaking cool lol also if you look closer there is someone in the locomotive. they got up right before it got to you as they were backing up lol
Hello Mr Jaw Tooth from the UK. Nice to see an American passenger station that is still in operation! I also was interested in that steam locomotive on static display. Big Boy spent years on static display before UP towed it away to restore it, so you never know what the future of this locomotive will be. Hope they restore it one day.
It's a Baldwin built Hudson that the CB&Q used to pull its crack passenger trains back in the 40's. There's one on display in Burlington and in Ottumwa also on the West main out to Denver. They are cool to look at.
@@jeremypreece870 I've heard there are still 5 on static display but I don't think any have been restored to running condition. Warren Buffett owns BNSF, is a railfan, and could certainly afford to restore one. Someone should give him a good kick in the butt to do it.
@@fiddlyphuk6414 Well, if the owner of a major rail company is a rail fan then there is much more chance that they will do something about restoration. The other factor of course is whether the internal parts of the engines are still in tact or if they have been plundered by scrap metal theft.
Cool switching, that slug was different, never saw one like that before. Hey did you take Shoestring over to see the Shoo-fly ? Haaa, sorry couldn't resist.. Great video !! 👍 👍
It's not being remote controlled. I'm pretty sure they're not allowed to RC across crossings and, in any case, you can see that there's somebody in the cab at about 16:25.
Jaw tooth thought it was remote controlled, that’s why it’s titled that way. But you can see the engineer in the 1st locomotive. Jaw tooth just didn’t see him is all.
I chased you down on google maps and wow... what an massive trainyard in Galesburg. I'd never seen a slug traction before.. that was pretty neat. Great vid and hey to Shoestring..
You and Shoestring make a nice team because you are both railfans. And railfans are my kind of people to be desired of. I like slow trains because I can read their numbers. I hate the scribble-scrabble on the railcars. That graffiti is a bad eyesight. Just take all of the valuable time when you shoot your shots of these trains. There is plenty of time to capture every detail of the trains. It is quite bad that this train did not run the whole line, but had to switch back to another track in the yard. I really wanted to see that whole train roll through.
I saw some kind of yard slug working in the BNSF yards in Hutchison, Kansas many years ago. It did not have a cab and looked like it was solely for additional tractive power and was attached to a manned locomotive.
Yes they are! This one had a brother that I wanted also. I got her when she was just a little tiny puppy and she was so small that she slept on my chest. She follows me everywhere. Her favorite thing is to ride in my truck
At low speed traction motors can't use all the horsepower that the diesel engine produces, so they send some electricity to a second diesel-less locomotive's traction motors. What replaces the diesel is something heavy for traction.
What a fascinating train - a lot of history on some of those box cars. Interesting to see Galesburg from ground level. I only get to see it overhead from VR’s camera. Many thanks for another great video. Thanks Jaw Tooth!
Watched Amtrak pull in at the depot one day and hung around on the platform up where the engines stopped to listen to them and watch the crew change. Conductor came up and showed his disapproval and sorta joked about me being a terrorist with a bomb and said I shouldn't really be standing up by the engines. Shewt- I was just railfanning but lesson learned.
Yeah… unfortunately, rail fanning in America (especially for a 15 year old like myself) has gotten much hard over the years. 2 years ago, someone called 911 on me for trespassing. It’s not illegal to stand by the engines, just make it obvious your a rail fan. When I was questioned by the cop, I had to inform him on what railfanning was. Interesting story though.
Thats a yard switcher locomotive tooth. They mostly use them in the yard to move cars around and make up the consist but occasionally they use them as a power unit..they are about 12-1,500 h.p.
Good Saturday Morning Jawtooth!! And Shoestring!

@@fiddlyphuk6414 Yes they are cool. Are there any that are actually restored and running do you know?
@@jeremypreece870 I've heard there are still 5 on static display but I don't think any have been restored to running condition. Warren Buffett owns BNSF, is a railfan, and could certainly afford to restore one. Someone should give him a good kick in the butt to do it.
@@fiddlyphuk6414 Well, if the owner of a major rail company is a rail fan then there is much more chance that they will do something about restoration. The other factor of course is whether the internal parts of the engines are still in tact or if they have been plundered by scrap metal theft.
Awesome video 🚄🚄👍
Thanks 👍
Jaw tooth, you never disappoint me. Thanks for the video.
That second engine looks similar to an SW1500 switcher but with 6 axles. Wow!
Cool switching, that slug was different, never saw one like that before.
Hey did you take Shoestring over to see the Shoo-fly ? Haaa, sorry couldn't resist.. Great video !! 👍 👍
What an awesome catch w a BNSF engine w a BNSF SLUG and to top it off being REMOTE CONTROLLED!
Thank you very much!
It's not being remote controlled. I'm pretty sure they're not allowed to RC across crossings and, in any case, you can see that there's somebody in the cab at about 16:25.
@@beeble2003 then if it's not why was the title of this video saying it was.
Glad you enjoyed it and tomorrow I will have another one from Galesburg
Hey Shoestring. Nice catch. That was quite a few cars.
Yes it was
BN: hey we got a new paint scheme from BNSF.
A Lot of Yard Work in Galesburg actually comes out onto the Mainline to go Back into the Yard. 👍
Its was great to see you in a city I live close to just 35 miles away, gone to Chicago on Amtrak out of that station right there
You and Shoestring make a nice team because you are both railfans.
Awesome video 😎🇺🇸👍
I am blessed to have a pair of blue heelers. Fun pups.
Yes they are! This one had a brother that I wanted also. I got her when she was just a little tiny puppy and she was so small that she slept on my chest. She follows me everywhere. Her favorite thing is to ride in my truck
I guess that slug is only worthy of the letters "BN". Must be they only use BN as it's reporting mark number. Love seeing those WC boxes.
You and Shoestring should do a monthly or weekly podcast. I really liked your interviews at the hobo convention!
Thanks James!
Shoestring made this video way better!
Glad to see you were in town. I could have shown you some cool spots.
Next time! I will have another video soon. Shoestring showed me a couple cool places to film
Jaw tooth it's a cool remote controlled location ❤ 😊
At low speed traction motors can't use all the horsepower that the diesel engine produces, so they send some electricity to a second diesel-less locomotive's traction motors. What replaces the diesel is something heavy for traction.
Beautiful colors
Thank you! Cheers!
I have never seen one with that strange look and 6 axels
