Eye-Rollingly Dumb Thing People Say About Sport Jiu-Jitsu & BJJ

  • Recently one of my newer White Belts competed in a BJJ competition. And while he was competing he made a few blunders with his guard pulling. Par for the course when it comes to a newer competitor trying to hit a technique in the intensity of sport Jiu-Jitsu. What was funny though is as he won the match the people on the other team criticized his techniques because "it wouldn't work on the streets."
And this my friend is one of the most annoying things I hear people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu say about others who are competing in sport Jiu-Jitsu. Because of course, many sports moves won't work in a self-defense situation or fight. That's a given. But during a competition we aren't in a street fight, we are involved in a sport Jiu-jitsu match.
I share my own ideas about the whole self-defense vs sport Jiu-Jitsu thing but I'd love to hear some of the things you hear said about Brazilian Jiujitsu (whether from other BJJ players or other martial arts).
So leave a comment with something people say about BJJ that make you just roll your eyes.
Leave your comments down below and I'll chime in and chat with you.

      @miesvaillanykyisyytta3252 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That's really a half-truth. Grappling works at a snails' pace and it ties up both of your arms to have any chance of working. Once both of your arms are busy trying to attack the strongest parts of the body the defender is free to ignore your arms and just attack the weakest parts of your body. A lot of grappling is based on the idea that the defender will try to fight off your arms instead of hurting you directly and they are not exactly wrong; it is a fairly natural response to start pulling at the arms of someone who is rape choking you instead of elbowing or eye gouging them and it might be too late once they try another escape. With that said, unless you have four arms like Goro in Mortal Kombat, you cannot work some elaborate submission and be fish hooking someone at the same time. I don't think even strongmen are that powerful that they could submit someone with arm and cheap shot them with another. Once a certain submission reaches its final stage, there is a good chance that reversing it with an illegal hold is impossible but this would depend on the move. This is also the reason why Jeff Speakman, upon upgrading his kempo system with ground fighting techniques, only wanted to add the kinds of techniques that he felt would not be foiled by reversals banned in competition.

I think that bias originated from the fact that some people actually got soccer ball kicked in the head when they tried to do a submission in a street fight. So people just started assuming that friends jumping in only applied to ground fighting. When countless other street fight videos completely debunk this idea. If they have friends with no honor you’re getting jumped regardless of what you try

@@maxanderson3733 in stand up striking styles, the goal is not really to fight. It is to create an opportunity to escape. Take karate as an example. Sport karate is an embarrassment these days. But the roots of it are that you wallop the opponent and get the hell out of there. That's how point sparring came into existence. But before sport, reading some of the older literature from the likes of Funakoshi, it's made very clear in writing, everything is about engineering an opportunity to escape. This is the key point of stand up styles against multiple attackers. It's not an MMA contest in the street. The goal is not to defeat all of the attackers. It's to crack one in the face with the hope that it stuns him long enough to push past and run. Gichin Funakoshi, founder of Shotokan, even mentions it in his book. There's a bit that suggests to bang on the door of the nearest house if you have to. He writes that many would be too embarrassed to do that, but how absurd to let embarrassment get in the way of survival for the sake of ego.

Most fights don't. That whole 90% thing was a misrepresentation by Rorion of arrest situations where LEOs had to ground suspects. That is the data he cited. Arrest data from the 80s and 90s. Totally different to a civilian altercation.
I worked in a bar for 4 years as a student (barman). I must've witnessed 100+ fights. Not one can I remember going to ground. The bouncers had something called "the 3 second rule" i.e. most fights last about 3 seconds. It's normally very violent and very vicious, and very quick. Like some guy throwing some shots, then running away or getting dropped himself. Or someone glassing someone then running away.
They weren't some ADCC match where the guys were at it for 10 minutes passing each others guard. BJJ is a self-fulfilling prophecy: You train to fight on the ground so you go on the ground to fight. That doesn't mean most fights outside of a BJJ gym end up on the ground. I can show you tons of real world altercations on here that don't go to ground.

I boxed all through high school, and most everybody I roll with don't stand a chance off the floor. I make it a habit to give em a little bop when they go for takedowns or pull guard. Just to remind em I'm only playing their game by choice.

It's just learning to become comfortable in the uncomfortable.

Whenever point fighting is brought up it's always insulted as not having any contact or not real fighting. I can only speak from my experience, but although we had to go by rules in the tournaments, we went very hard in training with continuous fighting, and we had very little protective equipment ie a cup and that's it. Although we tried not to hit the face, it happened, and get this, groin was a legal target! This led to my saying, I'm either injured or ready for further punishment. As for the streets, the little damage I took there (compared to what I gave) was nothing compared to what I sustained for the love of the art.Take care!

For anyone that thinks you can't use BJJ is a fight, just stay on YT and search for 'BJJ vs Karate" and one of the top results is a grimy no rules fight between the challenger (BJJ guy) and a Karate black belt. Spoiler alert, he didn't pull guard obviously. It's not like there's a gazillion other ways to take down and submit opponents... At the same time, you could probably pull guard in a street fight and win. It's just the risk associated with immediately giving up the high ground and knowing it might not be a 1on1 fight either, and that there may be weapons involved. But if it was some 1 on 1 challenge with no weapons, an experienced BJJ fighter could definitely pull guard and win against an every day "tough guy".

Why are people so obsessed with street fighting. Such a dumb fucking mindset. Learn to run and you're pretty much safe.

If it don’t work in a street fight why can’t the guy I’m fighting do anything when I’m in full mount? They’ll say anything to discredit anything

“Jiu-Jitsu guys aren’t good fighters because you just stay standing against one and they can’t do anything” also “Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t work if the guy has friends”
1: dude probably never had someone judo throw or shoot on him
2: No martial art works if the guy has friends

"so could you kick (random tall or large person) ass?"
I would never fight them... And if they for some reason couldn't accept that I wouldn't fight them and attacked me, I probably would run. Now... Could I keep them from hurting me, or knocking me out, or control them to the point they tire out and quit? Yeah most likely.

I do gi and no gi , personally enjoy gi more . I hate it when I hear no gi grapplers saying no gi is harder and u don’t wear that much clothing in street . And also when gi grapplers say your not fighting naked and gi is more technical. They are both difficult in its own aspects and is not direct to a street altercation as stated before . If you are good then you can use any amount of clothing you can get your hands on to benefit yourself.

Thanks Chewy. I get so irritated listening to others (sometimes instructors) poo-poo "sport" jiu-jitsu because a person isn't learning self-defense. I get that certain techniques that work in a competition aren't suitable for a real fight, but it's not like someone at a "self-defense" gym practices getting punched in the face during a roll. Perhaps they might use slow punches practicing a technique, or maybe even light slaps rolling, but that's not the same thing at all.
Seriously, if I really wanted to protect myself on the street, I'd buy a handgun and get a concealed weapon permit, not sweat my ass off for years trying to learn how to choke somebody else out before then can choke me out.

I always read this funny one “it’ll be real hard for you to use bjj when someone’s punching you in the face.” Couple things that irk me about this one. Yeah it’ll be harder when they’re punching but you’ll be punching too AND with better positioning. It’s hard to knock someone out when you’re laying on your back. Btw why do people assume bjj players are soft?? They act like we can’t take a punch or we’ll die. I’d assume most blue belts are mentally tougher than the average street fighter just because they workout more often than an average person.
