I used to be bad at painting..but after seeing your videos, I eventually got better. Used to flunk in arts and not the As wont stop coming. Thanks steve for being such a great teacher and inspiration
Nice little trees and a tall big one on this horizon line. Lovely ground with this variety of pastel colors (I like very much this mauve color). And also this line of small trees with their tiny leaves. Nice simple meadow but beautiful. I thank you Steven for this interesting demo. of gouache for the flower heads on the lovely foreground.
Thank u soon much dear....I am a house wife....I used to paint in my childhood days..now u are the inspiration for me..definitely I am going to teach this to my kids.
This is a great tutorial. I find it particularly helpful when we can see how wet/dry your paint and brush are, as well as how you apply the paint. Thank you.
Mark Westbrook It just boils down to plenty of practise Mark. The more you practise, the easier and looser it gets. After a while you start to paint with freedom and stop being scared of making mistakes. Thanks for watching and happy painting!
Beautiful pastel colors on your paper Steven. Small dark trees in the distance and a bigger one in the middle. A variety of pastel colors for the land. Lot of dark color for the foreground. I am looking you drawing this tiny tree on the left hand side and it came to my mind the following : If ever you wanted to put this tree somewhere else, what would you do ? Three more tiny trees with beautiful small flowers which put lot of beauty to this lovely painting. Nice yellowish color on right hand side. Some little flowers on the foreground as well as here and there on the land. Like you said, a little gouache would make the flowers stand a bit. From now on I'll have some gouache in my palette. Thank you Steven for these wonderful teachings and demos. I enjoyed vey much watching you painting these beauties.
+Mireille Romain when the trees in place it would be difficult to remove it and relocate it. That's where a little bit of planning beforehand comes in handy. As for choosing where to put it originally I will only put it when I think it will help the composition. I won't necessarily put it where it was in the photograph or real life
Great watercolor steve, just love your style and wish i could emulate,i have done watercolor in the past and had limited success, always got hooked up on the mechanics of the whole thing ,the way you keep things so simple and achieve such fantastic results is obviously a credit to your immense talent, and understanding of the medium.Gifted just happy that you had the insight to share it with everyone
I've been practicing on some scraps of watercolor paper trying to work out how to paint a meadow of flowers. Then I looked through your videos and here is what I am looking for! Thank you for this painting it has helped me a lot. Lovely work:)
Thanks again. Lovely meadow. I always look for a similar photo and have a go myself. One of the most difficult things is not being tied to 'copying' the photo. You've got down to a fine art - which it is.
Nice pastel colors on your paper Steven and some light trees in the distance, one tall dark tree in middle and a few dark short trees on left hand side. A nice land with a variety of pastel colors comes after these trees and some tiny dark trees with small dark leaves are on left hand side of this lovely scene. The flowers look nice on the land but maybe with some light dots they would look better. Don't you think so Steven ? This is a lovely scene and the view is fabulous with all these warm colors which go together. Sorry about my reading now what you wrote concerning the gouache. Yes it would be a good idea to use it. Thank you Steven for this interesting lesson and demos. This is a beautiful painting.
+Mireille Romain yes I think some light coloured flowers in the foreground would have added a nice touch. Thanks as always for your comments and support
Hi Steve, Love your videos. It's great the way you explain everything. And somewhere here on the posts you tell us that you learnt from books and videos, including Frank Clarke and Ron Ranson. I too have been trying this and all the time wondering if I were doing the right thing...thanks for the encouragement. I am having a lot of fun learning. And I love your accent too. Hello from Australia :)
Sandi Dureice thanks Sandi. Yes I learned pretty much all the basics by watching the 2 you mention. Clarke is a great teacher who puts you at ease. Ranson was the most exciting to watch.
I carry on the next day exactly how I finished with the palette the day before. You'd think it would be too messy but amazingly it's not! The paints are dry to start with but they soon loosen up with a damp hake.
Blue color and a bit of pink for the sky. A few small trees in the distance and some darker ones on left hand side and a big on the right hand side. Lovely land with a variety of pastel colors. Darker colors for the foreground. A big dark tree with tiny trunks and leaves on left hand side as well as three small tiny trees with small leaves on same side. The flowers cannot be seen very much with this dark color but with a mixture of a little bit of light maybe it would be better. Maybe also with a bit of gouache like you wrote, the flowers would be fantastic. I would like to know what you think. I thank you Steven for this interesting video as well as the small figures and birds.
+Mireille Romain yes it's difficult in watercolor getting light colours onto dark . You can either use gouache which is similar to acrylic in which you can paint straight over another colour or maybe use the paint straight from the tube and paint it on thick
Steven I think this painting is wonderful,I really enjoyed watching you bring it all together and I love the light values and the shadows, wonderful work me thinks! :)
Phil Porter It was simply the price that made me buy the paper initially. It works out at 30 odd pence per sheet, cheaper than the 140lb stuff I was using. This is 130lb and I wouldn't go any lighter than that. It would crinkle terribly if I didn't wet it all over to stretch evenly.
Another great demonstration that quickly evolves into a fine work of art. What is the lump in the middle of your palette? Just a build up of paint over the years? Makes me smile every time I see it?
Me encanta tu tecnica. Soltura y libertad de expresion; presicion en los detalles. Excelente forma de Manchar y de manejar el color, el contraste: el equilibrio entre forma y fondo. ¡Felicidades!,
I've used masking fluid in the past but never really liked the stuff. The smell is awful and I've ruined a few brushes so tried to find alternative methods. Thanks for watching Tony.
Enjoyed going through your video. I learnt a lot of basic stuff, which is so important to keep in mind. Please let me know how to add the flower stalks in the meadow giving it that green cover.
Ruma Sen the flowers were put in by drying the brush and then dipping just the very tip into the paint before dabbing onto the paper. thanks for watching Ruma.
Steve, I love your style and your imagination! I'm learning watercolors, and painting with you I'm actually creating nice paintings! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Is there a way I can share my paintings on this site?
Ursula Coccomo I'm glad the videos are helping with your watercolours. Unfortunately I'm not aware of how to share paintings on this site other than uploading your own video.
Nice Steven, I still have problems with the looseness of watercolor, I'm use to draw every detail I can, so it is very callenging... Thanks for the video...
Very Impressive. Going to sub and watch through your videos to get a better idea of watercolour. I neglect using it too often because I'm a finiky bastard but I want to get faster. Thanks for the vids.
Big brush watercolour helps avoid the finicky fussing with detail that bogs people down. With practise you'll loosen up and start to enjoy it. Thanks for watching.
Steven Cronin iris030380.deviantart.com/art/Cityscene-434911807 thats what I did ... still got bogged down with details and ended up on a number 4 though :D I'm trying.
TheVanillatech I see what you mean by the detail but then it's a completely different technique than mine though no less effective. Have you tried painting it looser without the outlines?
sudhir kothari yes there's no reason why anyone can't use the large hake brush. It takes a bit of getting used to as it holds so much water but stick with it and you'll get your rewards. Happy painting!
Steven Cronin Thank you Steve! The brush that I use is synthetic and it does not hold as much water. The hake that you use, does it hold its hair, I used a different brand than yours, an inexpensive one, it was leaving hair on the painting.I saw your brand on line and they are not that expensive.
I remember watching Frank Clarke on the TV and he said don't throw anything in the bin. Wait until the next day and look at it again and you'll often find you like it. Thanks for watching John.
Hello, I really love the work you're posting, you make it seem so easy. So I want to learn painting, and it's been a week now and I'm lost I donno where to start, any advice?
I started by watching Frank Clarke and his Simply Painting show at www.simplypainting.com He's the best I've seen at teaching from scratch. Happy painting!

Steven, you really have captured the essence of what watercolour painting is all about. Fresh, fast, loose. Blew me away.
Many thanks Colin

Steven....your style of painting in watercolor with a big flat brush is just Amazing ...
Many thanks Nandan
This is a great tutorial. I find it particularly helpful when we can see how wet/dry your paint and brush are, as well as how you apply the paint. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Steven that really is a masterpiece. You have the orange and blue to tee. I also am beginning why I often end with mud .many thanks
So loved your casual, easy style, felt very relaxed after watching. Thank you for posting xxx
Thanks for watching
I'm glad you like it John. Best of luck with your own painting. Very best wishes.

I'm glad the videos have helped with your progress with watercolours. I wish you well with your artwork. Keep practising and thanks for watching.
Your video was so inspiring. I love the way you use your hake brush and achieve such spontaneous paintings. Thanks for sharing this demo.
Thanks for watching and best of luck with your painting

Very nice work, I like your use of the larger brush. Larger brushes are favorites of mine and I like how rapidly you work. All the best.
Thanks for watching Glen.

I JUST LOVED HOW YOU DID THOSE LEAVES... And the whole process was very helpful to observe... Great Job.. Keep posting
Thanks for watching.
Hello Steven, I discover this very interesting lesson so thank you for that, and once again I salute your talent. Bruno in France
My pleasure!
I admire how impressionistic your technique is! That's my favorite kind of painting. Truly inspirational.
Thanks for watching Bryan. Hope you are well. Best wishes

Thanks for watching Gilda. I'm from Birmingham. Happy painting!
A nice painting Steven !
THANKS FOR SHOWING THE USE OF THE HAKE BRUSH, VERY ILLUMINATING !..
Cheers Stan

Excellent. Your tutorials are awesome.. I seriously need to start painting again.

Steven I think this painting is wonderful,I really enjoyed watching you bring it all together and I love the light values and the shadows, wonderful work me thinks! :)
Many thanks for your comments. I'm glad you like it.
Steve, i have seen almost all comments, you respond to every comment, that is really very nice. I like your artwork very much.
MrGemjimmy thanks for watching
I`m amazed at the results you get with your fearless style and MASSIVE brush!
What influences the weight of paper you use and how light would you go?
Phil Porter It was simply the price that made me buy the paper initially. It works out at 30 odd pence per sheet, cheaper than the 140lb stuff I was using. This is 130lb and I wouldn't go any lighter than that. It would crinkle terribly if I didn't wet it all over to stretch evenly.
Thanks again Steven, you are always inspiring. I am going to have a go at this one myself.
Hey Steve, you inspired me to use a hake brush, very interesting. Thanks for showing a skillful way to use them.
I love this! Nice colour combinations and a lovely sky! It also amazes me how you paint the trees with such ease, yet they look so nice:)
Thanks for watching
Thanks Massimo for your comments. I'm glad you like the videos.
Another great demonstration that quickly evolves into a fine work of art. What is the lump in the middle of your palette? Just a build up of paint over the years? Makes me smile every time I see it?
Yes it's just a build up of paint. The palette's falling apart so I'll need a new one soon.
beautiful work

I've used masking fluid in the past but never really liked the stuff. The smell is awful and I've ruined a few brushes so tried to find alternative methods. Thanks for watching Tony.
Steve, I see that he is back on again. Fun to watch, almost like hake painting with oils. Cheers.
I wanna ask, what do you do to the colours later? Throw or keep? I mean u mixed them so next time when u paint, it will be kinda 'not nice'

Lovely, thanks a lot for the demo. Amazing doing all that with a flat brush.
From what part of England do you come? I love your accent.
